I've not played either of the 2 franchises, could someone comment on the similarities and most importantly the differences between them? Youtube videos seem to indicate they're both mini game titles, but how are they executed?

Wario-Ware: Minigames of 5 or fewer seconds each where you are given a simple task to execute within the time limit. Very, very fast paced, and great hectic fun
Mario Party: A boardgame played out on screen where when you land on certain spots you have to do a minigame which is longer and more like race this go-cart, or bump your buddy off this stage, and things of that sort. Not nearly as fast paced, yet still great for lots of people.
It comes down to personal opinion. Mine is Wario Ware.
Mario Party does have a slight edge over WarioWare though. There's a bit more to accomplish in MP with unlocking more mini-games, levels and characters and there's much more of a competition since you're racing for Stars and Coins.
Mario Party is like a boardgame, where 4 players roll dice and move around the board, with the different spots they land on doing different stuff (like giving them coins, triggering events on the board, etc.), then after each player has gone, they play a mini-game together.
WarioWare is set up with a bunch of different characters having a set of different mini-games. Each one last for about 3-5 seconds, and is completely insane (sewing, picking your nose, eating an apple), then after 10-15 of these mini-games there's a boss game, which is like the other mini-games but it lasts a bit longer. Maybe a minute. After you beat the boss you unlock the next character's set of mini-games, so finishing the game usually can be done in a couple hours, but where the real fun is is playing each character's games again trying to get your high score, as after each boss game the speed increases. When you get above 50 or so it gets really tough.
Mario Party is good fun and all, but I think WarioWare is way more creative and better in general. It's also going to rule with the Wiimote.

There's really no question about which is more fun, I think. Multiplayer Wario Ware kicks Mario Party's ass in most cases. It's unfortunate that Mega Micro Games, Twisted and Touched don't have much multiplayer in them. Mega Party Games is awesome, and Smooth Moves is supposed to support some crazy amount of players by passing the controller.
But obviously, since Mario Party is quite a bit different, you might have more fun with it in other cases. Mario Party is more "strategic" and slow paced, and non-gamers might have more fun with it (as Wario Ware can be pretty hard).
I dunno, I noticed a trend, at least with my friends. Wario Ware starts out better than Mario Party, but then once you've seen everything in WW a few times, MP becomes the better game to keep playing.
Either way we still ended up playing Mario Kart the most.
A safe bet would be to get both. WarioWare is a little to hectic to pull out at every moment, and it can be frustrating for certain people (I have friends who have extreme difficulty swinging the club in Wii golf while simultaneously holding down the A button...). Mario Party is more calculated. You get to choose where you go on the board, you can team up with or against a person who's doing well, and each minigame is preceded by a thorough explanation. The minigames are also longer, and all 4 players can play them at once, as opposed to WarioWare in which everyone does their own minigame separately.

Agreed completely, Mario Party is just a longer game and (most of the time) your getting a completely different gameplay experience ... The more recent Parties have been pretty rough around the edges but still good, hopefully the create some significantly better multiplayer games because the last ones were pretty awful ...
While talking about the Party, why did they take out how you could actually lose coins in MP1? It just seemed like you didn't really gain that much when you won a mini-game ...
My main beef with Mario Party is that they release a new one every year, and they never improve very much.
So it's Nintendo's answer to Madden?
I'd say Madden makes more improvements with each version.
But really the game is just an excuse to have some people over and play a game. If you've never played one before, you could grab Mario Party 1-7 and get the exact same experience out of any of them.
Considering that it sells over 1.5 million copies every year and beats Metroid Prime's sales, I would say yes. It's commercially very important series which value is often dismissed by elitistic "true-gamers".
Mario Party haters obviously play with less than 4 people. I love the series as it's a great way to spend a lazy afternoon with 3 friends and (most importantly for a party game) it's highly accesable to all skill and experience levels. Yes they shove out the updates but they make enough changes to it to feel new enough each time and I (and, judging by the sales, many others) play it enough to justify the new purchase each time. Especially when the cost is off-set by selling the older version on EBay.
The Wii controller should really be a shot in the arm to the mini games and if manages to be online even better.
That said Wario Ware is the most awesome game series ever and beats MP hands down.
Another problem with Wario Ware is if you own it and play it single player, you learn all of the games.
When you play with other people it's unfair because a lot of the charm in the game is not knowing wtf you are doing.
So very true. I had such high hopes for Mega Party Games for the cube but had to sell it on as nobody would play it with me due to my familiarity with the GBA game making me unbeatable and hence no fun to play with.
That said the Wii one looks like it might be more universally accessable in that respect.

edit - so beat'd
Mario Party sucks.
That's the difference.
With WarioWare we get a really great, pretty different game every couple years.

Is it true that both these games use Miis? We need more Mii games.
