I have a 1996 Chevy S-10, and it has never given me problems until a couple of months ago. It took a lot of cranking to start. When I finally gave up cranking one night and popped open the hood, a vacuum line from the vacuum reservoir was dry rotted. I replaced the line and it started smoothly for a while. After a couple more weeks, I had the same problem. It ended up with me having to remove the fuel pump relay and install a manual toggle switch to run the pump. I would run it for about 30 seconds and it would start after chugging.
Now, it's completely dead. It chugs after running the pump, but it will not start. Could the bad vacuum line possibly mess up the fuel pressure regulator?
Any other ideas? I'd hate to drop $300 on a dinky little fuel pressure regulator.
So the fuel pressure only stays within range for about 30 seconds after I shut off the ignition. It can still possibly be the regulator, but it can also be a broken fuel return check valve. Not being able to work on my own shit really sucks.
