So we all know what critics are. They are people who get paid to look at movies, computer games, books, restaurants, hotels etc. and give us their opinions, and a verdict on whether they're worth our time.
For the most part, people look at critics' reviews to help them decide on whether to make a purchase or not, but there are also critics whose reviews are designed to entertain as well as advise, reviews that are good for a laugh even when you have no interest in buying the object of said review.
This thread is for discussing this kind of critic.
Here are some of the best critics:
Siskel and Eberthttp://bventertainment.go.com/tv/buenavista/atm/
Perhaps one of the first critic shows that could be watched on its entertainment value alone, Siskel and Ebert's chemistry is what makes this show great. It could be summed up as this: "two clever buddys who know their stuff have a good chat about movies". Unfortunately, with the death of Sskel and the jaw operation of Ebert, the show has passed on to new, not-as-good hosts, but the original clips are still on the above site for your enjoyment.
Zero Punctuationhttp://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation
By far the most popular feature of The Escapist website, this is a collection of hilarious computer game reviews made by Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw, with a distinguishable look and, as the title suggests, a lot of speaking into a microphone very fast. These reviews have a major tendency to accentuate the negative (as Yahtzee himself has pointed out on occasion), and is possibly the best example of reviews with a focus on making you laugh.
Nostalgia Critichttp://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/thatguywiththeglasses/nostalgia-critic
Also the most popular feature of his respective site,
www.thatguywiththeglasses.com, the Nostalgia Critic reviews those good old (or terrible old) films that we remember seeing in our younger days. Since we have obviously long since made the decision on whether to watch these movies, it's pretty obvious that these reviews are here to remind us of how great/bad/head-smashingly-horrifying the entertainment of our youth was, so that we can laugh/cry/stare in utter disbelief along with him.
he is also rivals with........
Angry Video Game Nerdhttp://www.cinemassacre.com/new/?page_id=13
Now, this guy isn't exactly my favorite critic, but he is certainly incredibly popular and deserves to be on this list regardless. He's basically the Video Game counterpart to the Nostalgia Critic. He reviews terrible games from the classic Nintendo/Atari/Sega days and reminds us all just how terrible, confusing and infuriating some of these games were.
Top Gear
(There’s no site for this, but the most recent episodes are on
BBC iplayer and i’m pretty sure you can buy every season for the iphone)
I am relatively uninterested in cars.
But I. LOVE. Top Gear.
The presenters (Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, James May) are likeable, the reviews are detailed and interesting, but the reason people watch Top gear is the challenges. When we are deciding on a car, do we wonder how they’d do in a race against a Eurofighter, in a game of car hockey, or in a military pursuit? Of course not, but it makes great telly!
So talk here about your favorite, funniest and most controversial critics and reviews.

Yes, Mr. Sherman, everything stinks.

I have written about the critics i know
If you like em, you write about them, smartypants

HATED IT
I love poop
if I don't love it, I don't swallow
MARGE IS THIS A PIMPLE OR A BOIL?
I hated this movie. Hated, hated, hated, hated, hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. Hated the implied insult to the audience by its belief that anyone would be entertained by it.
I think the guy can have some shitty opinions on movies sometimes but his video reviews are consistently funny and well produced

I like the one where they race through London in a car, on a bike and on public transport. Just shows how bad London traffic can be.
Hint: when reviewing non-fiction, you should probably not encourage the author to 'change things to make a better story'.
see thread title
Can't get enough Charlie Brooker, definitely NSFW.
Mark Kermode is one of my favourite film critics although for some reason he like the Twilight movies...
Shit jokes and the many varied ways you can use the word "fuck" in a sentence.
what is his obsession with diorreah (or however the crap you spell it)
(to be fair i found his batman review hilarious)
i disagree
Meh. His CAD rant was pretty good.
He can be hit or miss, but I do like the reviews he does about the older generation games and what-not.
argh you've reminded me of this one douchebag friend of mine who constantly invokes a similar concept, the idea that you're not entitled to comment unless you can do better
Fuck that I can't cook worth a damn but if there's shit in my soup the chef is going to hear about it
being a good critic is something that takes work and discipline
most people on the internet being critics are more concerned with being funny than being intelligent
i dunno
reviewing Batman and Robin or the Star Wars Christmas Special
What is that little tune at the beginning? I've heard it before.
