also, it's a bit much to call the game a mudpit with some concrete in it

it's a gorgeous game, but it has some grit in the camera

this does not make the game gears of war (which was also not grey and brown)

i think the perception comes from the seemingly inordinate amount of time you play at dusk/in the rain/cloudy weather.

it doesn't help that some of the indoor environments are literally too dark to see.

the muted tone makes the graphics look a lot more aesthetically appealing, even though they aren't technically all that better than saint's row

Err... what definition of "aesthetics" are we talking about here? I'd rather not see games through a "coffee filter" (as Yahtzee called it) since to me that looks like utter crap; I'd say Saint's Row is far more aesthetically appealing, but then again I care about being able to see what the fuck is going on when I'm playing games.

More great sets in this, Let's Play Grand Theft Auto IV: Finishing Phone Calls is for Chumps. :P

I may have said it already, I don't know, but they made bailing out in this game worthless. It's unfortunate, really, but it gets hilarious sometimes when you fly out only to hit somebody on a motorcycle or wrap around a pole or something. So I suppose it's a fair trade.

The Biker Dude's little "This ain't Russia and we ain't communists!" actually made sense in this, given Niko's hat. I enjoyed that, even though I hate that mission. I don't know how many times I played it because I actually lost the dude. Mostly from getting forcibly ejected off of my bike. When you hit him, I got happy.

Also, the Cafe Drive-through was epic.

bailing out in this game is about as worth it as it is in real life

that is to say, it hurts, is risky as shit, and you should only do it when your car is gonna blow up

Luckily, I only had to do the mission once. But I wasn't quick enough and had to kill him and his four friends. Which wouldn't have been so bad except I was new to the game at that point(as I think everyone is) and decided the best way to go about it was jousting them on my motorcycle. In the dark. On the grass. In the rain. And missing my front tire.

bailing out is awesome in that you normally pretty much continue to move in the same direction as the car at almost the same speed, but with bones shattering

I have GTA4 on my laptop (more powerful than my desktop, oddly enough) and it runs like balls so I don't play it much.

However, I have it on my 360 as well and I always have a TERRIBLE time seeing what the FUCK my cell phone is even saying if there's any light out.

This could be the shitty contrast ratio my projection TV has but I dunno; I know it sucks having to duck into a dark alleyway just to read my phone.

To combat unseeable darkness, I always just crank up my brightness. It's a fair enough trade for me.

that means you find it more functionally convenient, not more aesthetically appealing.

if you don't understand what I mean from what I've said and comparing screens, you probably just have a different sense of aesthetics than I (and probably most people, lack of citation notwithstanding) do.

The best way I can explain it is to say GTA's art style/palette artificially increases the resolution and makes the textures look better and gel better with each other than they would if they were brighter. Liberty City overall looks and feels more like a real city, especially when you have a view of distant buildings/structures than does Saints Row 2, where you feel like you're looking at geometry more than an urban environment.

    grand-theft-auto-iv-20081030095257242_640w.jpg
obviously SR2 wouldn't look any better if they dimmed the palette; GTA had a lot more thought and consideration put into designing the city. But given the resources they had to work with, I think it's pretty clear they wouldn't be able to maintain the resolution, texture balance and overall visual quality without making those concessions.

GTA4 needs a way to turn off the post-processing that makes everything hella dreary.

Anyone know of such a modification for the PC version?

I would rather just see the colours of the textures without correction.

Also there's a point in the video, early on, where I intended to point out that we live in a day and age where cops will lose their shit at you for throwing snowballs.

Also, this video has my FAVORITE RANDOM NPC EVER. I laughed more than you can actually hear on the video.

I was going to mention it on the video, but I hate the game thing. If you mention it, you lose. You must announce and all other players are granted an variable amnesty. This isn't Nam, there are fucking rules here.

Watching part 9; didn't know it was possible to get hit by the car in the cinematic. In all the playthroughs I've done, that car seems to exist solely so it can get flipped by the explosion (which didn't happen here, obviously :P)

On unrelated note: you don't really like pedestrians, do you?

So I got my own copy of this game earlier today for £3.99 (that's like $5 or so). It's more fun than I expected, and the customisable radio station is a godsend, since most of the in-game ones are awful. Not LCS style awful where they are all shit, to me, but close enough.

WSTT is the only default one I've found to be mildly decent.

Then again, that's always been the case since none of the "varied" music choices are what I'd listen to (with a whole one exception in VC).
