What do I need to know for a Cactus League trip?

Any of you happen to be baseball fans familiar with the Pa-ho-nicks area?

I'm thinking of taking a trip from Cleveland to Arizona to take in some Spring Training sunshine. The Indians are sharing a facility with the Reds in Goodyear, so I would try to base my operations near there. However I understand Goodyear isn't a great area, is that right? It would be sub-optimal to find myself booked at a hotel in an abandoned factory warzone just because it was 10 miles closer to the ballpark on the hotels.com map.

Any advice about where to stay, area-wise? Where to eat without breaking the bank or stepping on the locals' toes? When we went to spring training in Florida there were definitely a couple of spots that were not real friendly to the migratory baseball fan.

Goodyear isn't terrible, especially around the ballpark. The only problem is that the only thing out there is the ballpark. Will you have a rental car? That would open up a lot of options.

In the immediate area, you'll find the normal fast food and applebee's type places, but not much else. If you have a rental car and like vietnamese and/or chinese food, there's a pretty good place at Litchfield and Van Buren called King Egg Roll. If you go up to McDowell Rd and head east, there are lots of other options (sushi, steakhouses, pretty much anything).

A few years ago they put a Hilton on 115th Avenue and the I-10. That's about 5-10 mintues away from the Spring Training Facility by car.

There are also a couple of closer Hotels, maybe a Holiday Inn, on Dysart and the 10 which is a little closer.

Goodyear is an okay area. You're not likely to get stabbed or anything.

Yes, I will either have a rental car or my own car - we might road-trip it down there. Two thousand miles is pushing my wife's patience, but she's never seen much outside of Ohio and Hampton Roads. It might be good to see the USA in our Chevrolet. Louisville-St Louis-KC-Denver-Santa Fe looks like it might be a good route.
