Ok, I have nothing to go on when I compare it to City of Heroes.
But I have read previews that suggest that the overall gameplay concepts are tremendously watered down in comparison to what people expected under Perpetual. And to me, that doesn't really even matter either.
My whole thing is that Star Trek is about the crew of dudes working together on the bridge to do some cool shit. A MMO is the first real opportunity they've had to really diversify out the roles of players so that you can have capital ship combat in a multi-crewed scenario. It may not have been that good, it might have flopped, but at least it would have tried the concept to see what worked and what didn't.
And as soon as Cryptic took over, they immediately announce: "YOU ARE THE CAPTAIN!" and put out this whole thing about how every player will get his own ship, like it's a mount or something. And besides ruining the opportunity of interesting gameplay experimentation, that also doesn't fit in with the setting.
Long story short, I'm bitter because they didn't make exactly the game I wanted.
I beamed down to a planet and vapourized about a hundred Klingon warriors who were convinced an ambassador I was escorting was a shapechanger. Haha, that'll teach them to oppose me!
Boy was my face red when it really turned out that he WAS a shapechanger.

Yea, this game looks ace already.

Bottom line to me. A Star Trek MMO is pointless without player crewed ships
You and me, man.
One day though, I will make a Silent Hunter MMO where uboats are player crewed.
It will be the most boring game ever.
Sonarman.
14 real time hours with headphones listening for pings. Hour 8 you hear a whale. You then eat at the mess and sleep for 6 hours before your next shift.
That actually sounds fun to me though.
Or torpedo man! Better have pen and paper ready for some trig!

That sounds like the worst job in the navy.

I beamed down to various planets and:
Scanned for lifesigns
Solved a labour dispute
Shot the shit out of Klingons
Got lost in a sandstorm
Beamed out again.

This is exactly how I felt as well
And I still think that would be the ideal way to do a Star Trek MMO
But this really isn't bad, once you get past all that
If you want a game where everyone plays a crewmember on a spacestation/ship, try Space Station 13.
Then you'll see why it'd never work. Unless the point of the game is to survive long enough to get to the escape pods before the station blows up.

Something really cool about the game: since you are the captain of your own ship, you get to pick and choose your bridge crew and customize the shit out of them, complete with picking skills and uniforms and even customizing their appearance and biography and shit, plus leveling them up as you level up and choosing their skills and such
And they have abilities that can be used in space combat and ground combat

gettin' from there to heeere
I had to get past my own preconceptions of what a Star Trek MMO should be, but once I did it's pretty sweet
Besides, beaming down and fistfighting dudes on a planet is a totally Star Trekian thing to do

Perpetual had a great plan for this game, and a great looking engine, and they had to go and get bankrupt so instead you get City of Heroes in Space.
so its not very good?
if I had a champions subscription for some silly reason, I'd recreate it just to be a dick to cryptic
It's pretty radically different from City of Heroes
But I'm certain Perpetual's plans would have been a lot more imaginative
It would be hard not to be compared to this game, really

Can you beam down to a planet with primitive life forms and fuck the ever living shit out of them?

Space Station 13 is one of the worst designed games I've ever played.
