As I was messing around with my new DS and Brain Age, it occurred to me that this kind of thing wouldn't hurt my mom at all. She has Parkenson's and while it affects mainly motor skills, it can have some negative effects on cognitive ability as well. Lately she has become somewhat addicted to playing solitare on her laptop so the DS shouldn't be too big a leap for her even though she isn't a technophile by any stretch of the imagination. If anything the small size of the DS should help her get in a comfortable sitting position since that can be a problem at times.
Anyway, I'm trying to think of games to get for her but I'll need some help since I'm so new to handheld gaming myself. So far I'm thinking of just Brain Age+Big Brain Acadamy+some card games. I think Ultimate Card Games DS would be ideal but it isn't out yet. Anyone have an opinion of Clubhouse Games? I could also get the GBA version of the Ultimate Card Games but I'm thinking she will find the DS version more natural to play. If anyone else has games to recomend, I'm all ears.

Clubhouse games is great. Solitaire, not so much with it because you cannot change the settings to 1-card draw (at least, 2 of my friends complain about that). If she's a fan of regular solitaire, then it's fine. There are also plenty of other great games on the cartridge; plus single-card multiplayer means that you can play games with her even though you only have one copy.
My mom and your mom might be different, but my sister and I bought my mother a DS Lite for Christmas.
We got her:
- Brain Age
- Brain Boost
- Big Brain Academy
- Tetris DS
My mother has always also been a fan of the old Life & Death series on the PC. We didn't buy Trauma Center for her because I own it and there's no reason to have two copies in the house, but it's something she wants to play. Dunno if that would interest your mom. Er, sorry, if she has Parkinson's maybe not, I dunno.
GBA games are an option too, as you say. How about Monopoly?
Yeah, I'd recommend Clubhouse Games as well. There are a couple of crappy games in the mix (damn Ludo to the fiery pits of Hell), but overall it's a lot of fun (especially if she enjoys card games.) Puzzle mode in Polarium is fun as well.
Has your mom ever gamed in the past? My mom's only a smidge over 50 and she really liked Phoenix Wright, but she always used to play my Lucasarts/Sierra graphic adventures when I was in high school anyways, so it wasn't a big surprise.
One game I never see recommended is Electroplankton, though I guess it isn't much of a game.
I was visiting my relatives for Christmas and I actually got my 77 year old Grandmother--who grew up on a farm and never so much as touched a video game in her entire life--play with the little plankton in the ten different games. She really enjoyed it and thought the DS Lite was a neat little gadget once I showed her all the other games I play on it (Phoenix Wright, Trauma Center, Tetris, New Super Mario Bros).
If anything, it can be a nice diversion from "real" games and a neat thing to show off to relatives who may not be gamers. Though my Uncle did take my Dad's girlfriend's DS Lite to play Clubhouse Games for the entire time we were there.
If you do get her one be sure to get her a larger stylus (nyko makes a pen sized one that lights up rawr but probably any made for PDA's would work). I have an essential tremor that bothers me when writing and the default DS (brick) stylus is hell to use. Larger stylus FTW.
To be a little more specific: she has parkenson's but not so advanced that she shakes. When her meds and natural brain chem are at a low she gets stiff is all. Still, I'm looking for games that are not too taxing either of reflexes or strategy, just because I doubt she'd enjoy them.
So Animal Crossing is some kind of gardening/farming game right? If it allows mowing and taking a chainsaw to weedy looking trees, I know my mom is down with that, as it were. On the other hand, I know she hates to cook so Cooking Mamma seems like a bad idea.

Super Princess Peach might be another idea. Its a mario style platformer but its pretty easy atleast from what I've played of it. Maybe someone with more play time on it could comment?
Outside of Clubhouse games there are also several 'Ultimate Brain games' one out and I think another comming in a month or so. They are sort of like Clubehouse games but I think they might have some different games on em.

There's actually not much on the Ultimate Brain & Card games that aren't handled better by Clubhouse. I think Ulimate Card games GBA had more solitaire versions, but that was about it. I'd stick with Clubhouse at least until the DS versions of the Ultimate series hits.
Magnetica can be really fun too - I would think it would work for her, it's touchscreen based, but still isn't really fine motion.

Well, you get a big axe and a shovel, but the same basic mechanics apply. Animal Crossing is more about upgrading and decorating your house, but there are options to plant flowers and fruit trees. There's also fishing, fossil hunting, bug catching, and a ton of random town visitors, festivals, and other events. It's a fun little game that you can play for 15 minutes a day and feel like you've accomplished something.
Um. How old is your mom? With my parents, I can't get anything like a DS, because the screen is too small.
Put into consideration your mom's shortsighted vision. I recommend clubhouse games as well, but the rules text may be hard to read. Brain age generally has a larger font, but also requires more motor skills.

Your two friends should check out the "settings". I don't know how they could miss that.

I've only played solitaire once, on Stamp mode, so I didn't even look at the settings when I played those games. Good to know that it's in there then. I retract my previous statement.
Ok, I think that after seeing mine, she has decided that it would be a good idea to buy one for herself. She hasn't had any problems with either the screens or the controls. One thing she has asked about are word based puzzle games. Only thing I could find is some cart that included boggle. Is there anything else out there?

It keeps my mom entertained anyway. It plays exactly like most popcap style games (Switch two icons around to get three of the same kind in a row).
It's not complicated, no plot line, or anything along those lines, but it's fun to play. Granted it does get old pretty quickly though.
Yeah, my mom loves Zoo Keeper. It's pretty much Bejewled, but timed and with animals.
I was going to suggest Zoo Keeper as well. It seems to be a very easy game, I actually wish it was harder as I often find a single game gets me all the way to work. As such, Mum shouldn't have too much trouble having a lot of fun with it without feeling overly punished by the time limit. Bejewelled with animals indeed, though I'd say with a lot more visual appeal. Looking for images that match should be just the kind of brain exercise that would help.
For what it is worth, I despised Clubhouse Games. Lots of games on it, all of them handled so badly. Ugly interface, painfully slow, more a form of torture than of entertainment.

Heck no, that is all about instant reactions, even a mum without Parkinsons is going to struggle to move fast enough to work out what is going on. Something more sedate is required for elderly women of any description.
My mum went through the first case in Pheonix Wright and loved it, with only a minimal amount of help from me regarding the controls. It only needs a little input from the stylus in case 5, aside from that it can be played with just the buttons and there are no quick reactions moments either

She has never played anything other than popcap style games on PC before, but she is crazy about those 4 games.

You know - I was wondering if that was just a figment of my imagination or not.
I want that for myself now. :P
Monopoly can actually be fun against the computer.
Oh, wait. Didn't you mean my mom?
Cooking. Mama.
It might be a little cutesy, but it's fun, and it's...well, got cooking.
Er yeah, and I obviously can't read OPs properly. My bad.
And Echo, if those are her tastes, your mom is awesome.

It also isn't much of anything except something that makes me mad and want my $40 back.

Brain Age has Sudoku too, of course, but it's limited to 100 puzzles.
I don't her vision is good enough for her to tolerate a DS game.
What about Hotel Dusk?
No im just kidding.. maybe.. I'd agree with the Phoenix Wright suggestion.
I never asked for this!

They're readily available off and on... we've got them back in, I know.
Also, the second one comes out tuesday.
