XBLA Recommendations?

So (start sob story here) - wifey has been unemployed since May and my gaming purchases have been very very limited. Thanks to my upcoming birthday for the first time in awhile I find myself with some Microsoft Fun Bucks. I have 1600 ready to go but didn't see a general Arcade thread here or any recent recommendation threads.

My arcade library right now is Castle Crashers, Outrun, TMNT Arcade, Marvel vs Capcom 2, and that disc that has Pac Man Champion/Uno and few others.

As of right now, I'm thinking I'd like to play Magic since I haven't played since right after college (so almost 10 years ago now). Geometry Wars is fairly tempting, I did like the Wii version as well. The board games Catan and that other C titled one also look pretty neat.

I'd prefer to get more bang for my buck if possible - I like pretty much everything except RPGs. Any suggestions?

I keep reading Braid is great but a bit short for the money. Shadow Complex looks pretty sweet though - sort of a Metal Gearvania style thing. I may have to download some more trials - Splosion Man one is really fun actually.

    Braid
    Catan
    Geometry Wars 2
    Rez HD
    Shadow Complex

I think Shadow Complex is still 1200, so you could get a good 400 with it. I don't remember the pricing on those, but I think Doom is 400, so if those are all too expensive I'd check it out.

And Shadow Complex is a ton of fun. I don't know anyone who's played it and hasn't liked it.

Yeah, even if unlike me you don't find Braid to be an over-hyped waste of time, it's way far down on the "bang for the buck" list, since unless you fall in love with it you'll play it once and then that's it.

Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2 is fantastic, and addictive as all hell. Ikargua is also amazing if you're a shump fan.

Also, if you like platforming games, definitely check out Splosion Man.

I'd say Defense Grid has a solid bang : buck ratio. Try out the demo; it's a fairly representative sample of the full game.

Sorry about your financial situation, man. Get Geometry Wars 2 imo and I can't say enough good things about Trials HD. Probably my second most played XBLA game next to the original Geometry Wars. If you like twin stick shooters you cannot go wrong with GW2. Trials is good if you like the idea of rushing through tracks to beat the top scores of friends on XBLA.

Shadow Complex can keep you occupied for weeks if you get really addicted to it. The initial run is rather lengthy as well. I think my first took somewhere between 12-15 hours. If you dig Metroidvanias then you'll love this. I replayed it immediately after finishing my fist run, and that's something I don't do very often. There are challenge rooms to complete as well.

I also really, really like Bionic Commando: Rearmed, but opinions seem mixed here. I think it's fantastic and would easily rank in my top 5 XBLA games. Exploration is important, but I wouldn't say it's emphasized. If you can handle the platforming mechanic then I think you'll enjoy the game overall. Challenge rooms not unlike those in SC are present as well.

N+ is probably my favorite platformer that I've played on XBLA. There are A LOT of stages to complete in the vanilla game, and 2 or 3 cheap map packs to do after that. You can also play user made levels.

Of course, try the demos for everything before buying.

I'm shilling this game to anyone who will listen, but you're not going to get much more bang for your buck than Miner: Dig Deep, at only 80 MS funbucks.

Assuming you don't mind titles from the Indie game section, there are some real gems there at reasonable prices.

    'Splosion Man is fantastc.

Not only is it challenging, but it's so smartly designed that you'll wonder why other developers don't have the same level of common sense (unlimited lives, frequent checkpoints, instant loading when you do die). It's also quite funny and has co-op missions.

Geometry Wars 2 is a visual and audio wonder, I'm still playing it almost every day. I know's there's offline multiplayer, but I haven't tried it out.

Another indie game that I just got and enjoy is Groov. It looks like a blatant copy of Geometry Wars at first, but everything that happens onscreen affects the music.

Lots of good recommendations in here. I usually come into these threads to suggest Rez HD, but I've been beaten to it.

Thanks for the input all. I played trials for splosion man, bionic commando, the space themed tower defense game that I can't remember the name of, braid and a few others. I'm going to try the indy game too when I'm back at my console. I don't know how to decide! The demo points to yes - but is bionic commando a straight remake of the nes game or are there more levels/additions.

I think I'm gonna need more points :)

Bionic Commando is an almost straight remake. They changed the way some of the weapons work, and made it so you can choose your weapons on the fly instead of being stuck with just one for the entire level. The last level is also new.

edit: Yeah, they also added new bosses.

I totally agree and actually forgot about that one. My wife and I both loved this game, and it's incredibly addictive. It lost replay value to me after a playthrough, but what an amazing $1 experience!

You mentioned you were interested in Magic? I would recommend it; you can get quite a bit of play value for the price. If you have Live you can play 2, 3, and 4 player games. Note however that it is all preconstructed decks; the only customization you get is you can opt to include or not include cards that you unlock.

Best M'er F'ing game on XBLA.

I do recommend Trials HD to anyone who enjoys having rusty nails hammered into their penis, though. Its roughly the same experience.

The nails are slightly more enjoyable.

I wouldn't personally recommend Trials HD. The first half of the levels are great, but the second half quickly become more frustrating than fun, and killed my enjoyment of the game. They're frustrating to the point that it doesn't feel rewarding to beat them. But if you're a masochistic completionist it might be the game for you.

Shadow Complex costs the same but I got a lot more enjoyment and playtime out of that. Anyone who has played Metroid or the later Castlevanias will love it. Incidentally, you can also D/L Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

I'd also recommend Marble Blast Ultra, which is only 400 points. Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords is addictive and will get you a lot of bang for your buck, although it gets a bit repetitive. Banjo-Kazooie is there in all its glory if you want a good platformer. Braid is cool and all, but you'll get much more playtime out of BK.

If you're into board games, Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, and Catan are great. Worms 2 is wonderful for local multiplayer.

If I were you, I'd put the 1600 into Shadow Complex and Marble Blast Ultra, but I'd check out the demos for all these games.
