Original Xbox Live issue - "must read message before sign-in" - nothing there

I have a 360, and the same account/name for Live on it.

Went back to first time in a long while to original XBOX, whenever I try to sign in on the dashboard OR any game it says I have an important message to view before anyone can sign in, but after punching in my pass code, it takes me to a new screen where it says there are no messages to view and boots me back. Rinse, repeat

Additionally, trying to make a new account takes me to a step where I need to enter a subscription code to continue...

Er, didn't they have free Xbox Live accounts on the original Xbox?

I think somewhere in G & T there was a thread talking about how Microsoft is shutting down Live for the original xbox. I could be wrong though.

I don't know about the message issue, though I'd suspect it's related to the imminent shutdown. However, I'm pretty sure MS didn't offer free XBL accounts before the 360. Hence, some of the controversy about the differences between Silver and Gold accounts.

It's always done this if your gamertag has been on a 360. Once you recover a tag to a 360, or a 360 tag gets recovered to an OXbox, you get that forever. You also can't view account details or anything from the dash.

but uh, that means I can't sign into live at all on the original xbox? play halo 2? connect to live with PoP? that doesn't sound right

Yeah, there was no "silver" membership on the original Xbox. You either had live, or you didn't.

perhaps this is all because I dont have gold at all right now.

if i pay for a month through online or hte 360, will that work for me getting live on the original xbox since the gamertags are all linked?

I can send you a 24 hour code when I get home from work if you PM me and remind me.

that'd be great, i think I could use it either way, but can those be used with existing accounts or new ones only?

48hour codes can be used on existing accounts, as long as you don't have any gold months left on your 360 for new accounts

I just tried a 48 on a silver account, it accepted it, but absolutely nothing happened... :( it remained silver...?

I think I remember doing that a long time ago too, and same thing happened.

It remains Silver, but has certain Gold privileges. You can play online, for example, but you can't access Gold-exclusive demos.

No. Live was pay-only on the oXbox. Free silver didn't come around until the 360.

If you haven't already, try turning the system off and on again.

Could be something to do with the 48 hour trial, I guess. Never makes you look gold, but gives you access to the gold services? I pulled that code out of a MW2 box.

Now I see this. Ok so it worked... for the 360. I could finally sign onto Halo 2's Live and get the DLC.

However, it wouldn't work for the original Xbox. Still giving me the message loop if I try through the dashboard.

    Hmmm

Well, yeah. Your account is still technically a Silver account, and the OXB doesn't understand that. The 360 can just about get around it with its OXB emulation, but the original machine doesn't know whether it's arse or breakfast time.

If you only want Live access to get the original Live content on your original Xbox before April 15th, you'll have to buy a month card. I don't personally think it's worth it just for that, but that is of course up to you.

the pseudo-gold thing just applies to 48 hours passes, right? how did you even find all that out. to the eye, it appears it swallows the code and nothing changes.

are there still such things as 1 or 2 month gold cards that come inside various games? I will purchase a month's worth of live if it comes down to it - but I'd rather not pay $9 or whatever it is just to get the DLC either.

maybe someone has a month card for me that came free with some game and they're not gonna use it.

Did and done. However, would also like backups on my original. Plus, some games with DLC don't have backwards compatibility on the 360. Like MechAssault.

Blastacular Map Pack for Halo 2 came out after I had last used my original Xbox and Gold membership lapsed. Trying to just get a copy of it without spending money unnecessarily.

On phone now trying to get 18004MYXBOX to accept an old unused 2 month gold card. might be expired :S

I don't think any of the old 2 month codes ever actually expired

However, they had to be redeemed through the OXbox dashboard...

Haha, which, of course, I can't access.
