Negotiating public transport (Oakland->Monterey)

I'm living in the Bay Area for a couple of months, and while I'm here I'm trying to get my PADI scuba diving certification.

Whoever I end up going through, this involves a weekend spent in Monterey. I'm trying to work out the best way to get there, and it is absolutely giving me headaches, so I was hoping someone more familiar with the area might be able to help me out.

It would be fantastic if I could work out some way to get from Oakland to San Clara by 5pm on friday aftenoon, and then on from San Clara at 10pm to be in Monterey by 9am the following morning, and then directly back to Oakland on Sunday night; but that might be complete madness so I can cut the San Clara leg out.

The simplest way seems to be to get myself to SFO and catch the airport shuttle down to Monterey airport, but that is $45 each way + the cost of BART at this end and the cost of a cab at that end.

I can't drive, I'm only 21 so renting is hard and I'm not game to drive on the opposite side of the road.

Alternatively, what's a good way to try and meet someone who might be interested in doing it with me..?

    Greyhound? Looks like you could do Oakland -> Salinas for around $20.

    I can't help terribly much but we lived in Monterey for a little over a year and a half and the best bet for Public transport in that areas was cabs and the bus system. IIRC, there's no trains that run directly to the area from SF/San Jose.

    If you're ruling out the renting and driving (for understandable reasons), greyhound might be the best option. Get to Salinas, then take a bus from Salinas to whatever area in Monterey you need. (http://www.mst.org/)

    Or the airport shuttle, which I wasn't aware of. Is that the airbus? (http://www.montereyairbus.com/)

    That's it. I've seen it many times while waiting for another airporter.
