To be fair, Toronto, so it was probably +5 degrees outside given our retarded weather.

I have to say, it's still overwhelmingly moving how united the country was by these Olympics. I hope that that's a lasting effect.

United indeed it seems. Ratings are stolen from NHL thread (via TSN.ca)

16.6 million viewers on average for the game, 26.5 million watched part of it. Thats 80% of Canada!!

14.3 million viewers on average for the closing ceremonies, 24.5 million watched part of that.

My guess is they shed 10 million once Nickelback showed up.

Hey, I have a question - why are the summer and winter games treated separately (besides the obvious answer they they're different)? It's kind of weird handing the flag off to Russia when the next games are in London in two years time.

I can see on one hand that "join us for the next winter games in ___" makes sense, but they're both run by the IOC so it makes as much sense to say "join us for the next Olympic games in ___" since London will be the next time the "Olympic movement" is back together hosting an event.

Winter and summer get treated separately because they really kind of are anyway. Completely different set of possible hosts, completely different set of events, completely different set of athletes, significantly different set of people that care. They even have different official names; I screwed that up myself in the first thread when I called these the "Games of the 21st Winter Olympiad". They don't call it that in winter; they only do that in summer. In winter it's the "21st Olympic Winter Games".

ROGGE: "And let us call on the youth of the world to meet in two years in London!"
WINTER ATHLETES: "...yeah, hey, great, Rogge, we've kind of got plans then."
MAYBE ONE RANDOM ALPINE SKIER: "Hooray! I get to pursue my hobby of air pistol!"
    OTHER WINTER ATHLETES: "Quiet, you."

I don't understand why people hate Nickleback so much. There are worse artists out there. Like Avril Lavigne and Simple Plan.

I was hoping for like.. Our Lady Peace, or BNL, hell even Nelly Furtado. Oh well.

Because Nickleback aren't just bad, they are bland and samey and yet INCREDIBLY popular and, if you live in Canada and aren't deaf, utterly inescapable.

    Y'all already missed the Scotties.

Which is sad since the Championship game was one of the best curling matches I've seen.

Briar is coming up in a few weeks though.

I only caught four cities that have ever attempted to host both. Montreal, Munich, Helsinki and.... Minneapolis. Yeah. Minneapolis.

I mean, yeah, there's country overlap, but you have to look within those countries. Let's be honest, Atlanta isn't hosting the Winter Olympics anytime soon, and Lake Placid isn't getting the Summer Olympics anytime soon.

I watched the game at a bar in the Annex and then walked down Bloor to Yonge and Dundas Square. Let me say that what was going on Bloor was nothing compared to what it was like on Yonge. Both sides of the street had just tons of people wearing Canada related stuff and high fiving, cheering and chanting. All the cars were honking and tons of people were leaning out of their car windows or standing through the sun roofs waving flags. People were running up and down the street giving high fives to people in cars. It was crazy and went on for like hours. They closed off Dundas square and parts of Yonge to traffic and a literal sea of people were gathered there.

And got fewer votes in the second round of balloting than the first. Puzzle that one out.

When wondering why the Olympics never hit New York, I thought for a second that the crime rate had something to do with it...

then I remembered that Rio gets the games in 2016...

New York has a high crime rate and low sexy Brazilian woman rate. Rio only suffers from one of these problems.

Also no one likes new yorkers.

I'm really disappointed that Brazilian Jiujitsu won't be a medal sport in the summer olympics in Brazil :(

That's always going to be a little bit of a chip on New York's shoulder until they get the Games.

Antwerp, Belgium hosted the Olympics, and New York hasn't. And the decision as to who gets the Olympics is beyond their control.

    Antwerp. Post-WWI, sorry-for-getting-curbstomped-so-here's-the-Olympics-are-we-cool, your-Games-sucked-but-we-expected-that-here's-a-gold-star-for-trying Antwerp.

Is it really 100% for sure that BJJ wont be at the olympic games? That kinda sucks, I can see the appeal for it, especially with the rate that MMA / submission grappling's popularity is growing. In 6 years, it'll be even bigger than it is now.

Antwerp... I'll always think of Quest For Glory when I hear that.

The big thing with the NY bid was that it was reliant on a bunch of facilities that were never going to happen. Case in point - the political fiasco that was the attempt to turn an MTA railyard into a new stadium, and in the process enrich the developers at the expense of the taxpayers of the city.

Being a resident of NYC, i think hosting an Olympics here would be a terrible idea. There's no need to showcase the city - NYC is showcased regularly. There's no need to boost tourism. There's also no need to cause a ton of headaches for two weeks.

All it would actually accomplish would be to have a ton of money spent on new facilities and (way more importantly) new infrastructure to support the games. I'd rather they just spent the money on new infrastructure without actually hosting an Olympics. A high portion of NYers feel the same way, and as such there was never really any local support for the bid here. No one cares or really wants it to happen.

Rio's crime rate is much, much worse than NYC's.

Murders per 100,000 people per year:
    NYC: 6.3
    Rio: 37.7

    Yeah.
