Animation: George Lopez = Non-Racist Speedy Gonzalez
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Speedy Gonzales is taking his folk-hero status, incredible speed and signature red kerchief to the big screen, with help from George Lopez.
The comedian is attached to provide the voice of the fastest mouse in all Mexico for a politically correct live-action/CG hybrid feature set up at New Line Cinema.
The Looney Tunes character debuted in the 1950s as a regular nemesis of Sylvester the Cat. A 1955 short about the tiny hero, "Speedy Gonzales," won the Academy Award for best short subject, (cartoon). Pat Boone even released a hit song about the famous mouse in 1962.
Over the years, Speedy appeared in the live-action/animation features "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," "Space Jam" and "Looney Tunes: Back in Action." But the character has often courted criticism that the ethnic characterizations of him and his compatriots (especially lazy cousin Slowpoke Rodriguez) are stereotypically racist and severely outdated.
Aware of this, New Line and the producers plan to update the brand with a modernized sensibility.
"We wanted to make sure that it was not the Speedy of the 1950s -- the racist Speedy," said the comedian's wife Ann Lopez, who will serve alongside him as a producer. "Speedy's going to be a misunderstood boy who comes from a family that works in a very meticulous setting, and he's a little too fast for what they do. He makes a mess of that. So he has to go out in the world to find what he's good at."
That path becomes clearer once Speedy befriends a gun-shy race-car driver.
"Garfield" scribes Alec Sokolow and Joel Cohen will write the script.
I don't think I need to highlight the parts that send off any red flags when it comes to how potentially awful this can be. Now I can understand (a little) why some cartoons of old may not work as it did years ago, but I think there's limits to what actually needs to be covered under the politically-correct banner. How long will it be before the animation of recent years ends up chopped up and eventually locked in some vault somewhere?
of course speedy gonzales is racist, that video was too long for me to find the part which might be considered violent at all, be more specific, and that was pretty disturbing.
I loved Speedy Gonzalez when I was a kid. Dude was fast. They should do a Speedy Gonzalez and Flash team-up like that one cartoon where Daffy Duck became a Green Lantern. Speedy Gonzalez with the speed force.

No, I think I just disliked all the little smart-ass characters who always outsmarted the big, goofy characters. I felt really bad for Tom and the Coyote and all those guys.

What spring does with the cherry trees.
Tom and Jerry was great because Tom would get a few licks in, especially in the older episodes.
Tweety was just annoying.

I think we know this Speedy Gonzalez movie wont be very good.
That Flapjack clip comes from the most demented episode I've yet seen on the show. I don't know how they got that much past the censors. And on that note Adventure Time managed to push it enough it now has a tv-pg rating. Perhaps you've seenthe promo clip where they punch the heart until it blood bursts forth?
didn't somebody just tell me that new line isn't a thing anymore

You know Speedy himself is actually a pretty good character.
He's hard working, brave, sticks up for the little guy, is competent with explosives and it hard working.
Granted the ridiculous amount of Spanish he uses and the hat he wears isn't the best, but it wouldn't be that hard to change those those two features. And lets be honest here, no one really remembers details of his friends other the fact that he was rescued (which were admittedly bad stereotypes). You could swap them out without anyone noticing.

You might be thinking of miramax that just got shut down
I'm pretty sure Speedy Gonzales was cartoonizing mexican culture and stereotypes, not hispanic race and stereotypes, at least from what I remember
Kind of like how a lot of American material cartoonizes french culture and stereotypes. I would not call that racist.
But then, I barely remember anything of the god damn show so I don't know why I am arguing for it
