Learning Gee-tar

Hey everyone.

I am in the market to learn how to play electric guitar and need some suggestions. I have very little musical background and have never played an instrument...I have taken a few basic music courses throughout school and can read music somewhat, but that's about the extent of it.

In any event, I am dead set on learning how to play guitar and want to know what a decent setup for a beginner would be (preferably around or under $200?). We have a pretty good music store in the area (guitarcenter) so if you guys want to suggest something off of there, even better.

My second question is: I don't really have that regular of a schedule, so lessons would be hard to do until summertime at the earliest. What are some good books that I can buy to teach myself? I know very little about guitars, tabs, etc so the more basic (but informative) the better.

Thanks!

somewhat in the same boat as you, concidering picking up a guitar.
Cant really help you with any particular guitar, but from what ive been reading its best to drop by a store and just try some out, see what fits your hands and whatnot. Its also recommended to have the store do a setup of you guitar (should be free or cheapish atleast), just to make sure the height of the strings from the neck/frets are at the best height and all other sorts of good things. Others suggest getting a known brand name guitar, helps with resell value.

from my searching for tips it seems alot of people recommend this site http://justinguitar.com/ for learning guitar. havent taken a good look at it myself, but it seems good enough to start out with.
