Buying a car, out of state.... on a Sunday (Solved)

So Sunday I'm going up to New York State (I'm from Jersey) to pick myself up a second car. Normally I would just hit the DMV with the guy selling the car but being Sunday it's not open. How can I get my new toy home without towing it? The seller doesn't have plates on the car because it's a non-daily driver so I can't just use his plates. Someone told me I can just that one of the plates off my car and use that for the ride home, and to the DMV on monday. Is that legal? I mean, if a cop gets behind me and runs the plate they'll see right away that it's not the car the plates are registered with. I really want to pick up this car but Sunday is the only day me and the guy are free for the rest of the month.

Thanks for any tips/tricks from anybody that has done this before.

Your best bet would be to call the DMV and ask them what you can do.

I'm not sure if its possible but maybe they can sort them out a few days early?

According to this page http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Vehicle/TemporaryRegistration.htm You can go pick up a temporary tag for $5 from the DMV. Put that on there and have the bill of sale handy and you should be fine.

If you get into an accident, you could be fucked without proper registration or insurance.

Don't "borrow" plates from your existing vehicle. Try to get temp tags through your state DMV in advance. Then line up some insurance.

Put it on a flatbed and tow it in.

Good call, I've been on hold with the DMV for like a half hour now... I don't know if i'll be able to pick up temp tags without a bill of sale or title. I can get the VIN from the seller and line up insurance for the ride home but I'm still gonna need tags. Stupid Sundays...

From what I see you will definitely need either the bill of sale or the title. You might want to look into getting it towed and at least see what the rates are.

Ok so the DMV is terrible and "Sharanda" said I should check the New York DMV's website and then hung up. I called a few places for towing rates and damn, it's like 1/3 the price of the car. I'm gonna have to call the seller and set up another day.
