Really really skeptical on this version. Every new music track I've heard has been completely awful and the new graphics are almost imperceptible to me. Yeah, I can play it with the old or new graphics and with the old music, but I can do that on the PC for free, too.
I'm pretty torn on Cave Story WiiWare edition. On the one hand, enhanced version of a great game. On the other hand, the original version is free.
You're an aspiring developer, surely you can understand the need to support.
Also, I don't know about you, but when people give me stuff for free, be it games, webcomics, music, anything, I always tend to be more enclined to give them my money for their products. If you want to encourage more people to make awesome freeware games that later get turned into awesome WiiWare/PSN/XBLA products, do buy Cave Story.

Yes, but I'm also perpetually broke. If I was a bachelor with money to spare, I'd pick this up no questions asked, but as a father constantly trying to make ends meet, I have to be far more selective with what games I end up buying and chances are that an upgraded port, even of a great game, isn't going to make the cut.

I think I read there is a boss rush mode for this too? I played one on the pc and loved it. I also remember finding a "hard mode" compilation of edited main maps that was just ludicrous. The person who designed them had mad skills, but was also legally insane. I made it to the grasslands, but it required you to do things obscenely hard and all in a row, with one mistake making you need to start ALL over. But it was good for masochistic gamers like me.
Good proof of how good a game this man made and deserves every dollar this gives him.
-New music is kind of weak. Kind of a mix between an NES and C64 sound chip, but the music doesn't seem nearly as full as the original soundtrack. I'll probably need an excuse to play through this game again to listen to both soundtracks, being...
-Curely Brace Story Mode. Doesn't seem terribly different from the original, save playing as Curely. However she does have a few speaking lines such as announcing her name when she meets Toroko proper. I wonder what'll be like meeting with Quote latter (whom I assume takes her place)
-Huzzah > Oh Yeah!
-New graphics are pretty snappy. They look pretty clean on my plasma and it doesn't simply look like a 2xSal or the like. Toroko and Sue's character portriats seem to benefit the most.
I've played up to the sand zone so far, and the new translation isn't as good as the fan one, unfortunately. I think it's trying to be a lot more faithful to the original Japanese, often at the expense of sounding natural, or making sense.
I'm also pretty annoyed that there's no gamecube controller support. It took them what, like, 3 years, and they never thought of that?
Don't let all that get you down too much, though. These are ultimately minor issues. The important part is that it's still Cave Story, and therefore more than worth your money.

I hate it when people do this! Like now Yotsuba has been picked up by a new publishing company who are all overjoyed with themselves that they have reinstated -chans and -sans and 'fixed' the name of a carboard box robot from 'Cardbo' to 'Danbo'. I would rather have a new pun name that makes sense to me in English than a Japanese pun with an asterisked footnote! There is more skill and user enjoyment in an effective localisation than a literal translation! Yargh!
They need to go get a dictionary and look up precussion. It's absent in this game. I'm a purist so I'll be playing the whole thing with new style and then switch the music back to normal.
B-b-b-but I just like having the fang! It's not cheating if I only use it for the fang, right?! I'm still a good person! I can't use gecko anyway, so it doesn't matter. Actually I wonder if they even bothered to translate it and kept it in the game or if they just removed it.

I don't think they would find an entry for that. Unless it's like, the stuff that comes just before the percussion. And then afterwards you'd have the postcussion.
They replaced an awesome catch phrase with a shitty overabused Kool-Aid in-joke, just because Balrog busts through walls?
I absolutely hate it when localizers do this shit.
I'm inclined to believe that the original dialogue translated more closely to that than an old term that nobody has used seriously since the 50's. I think they went for a more literal translation this time. Either way I was never really a fan of Balrog so that change means pretty much nothing to me.
AaronKI, what about setting the Wii to widescreen? That might scrunch up the picture since your TV can't do it.
Also joining the crowd, the remixed music is pretty bad. A lot of it hurts my ears because it's high pitched 8-bit sounds. Just listen to Egg Corridor. I'm interested to see how they handled the last boss fights and Hell though. Maybe those got turned even more awesome? They lend themselves better to a remix than Moon Song or Egg Corridor I think.

More accurate or not, anybody working on a project like this should have done their homework enough to know that 'Huzzah!' is a fan favourite line now. Like when the updated translation of FFIV left in the 'Spoony Bard' line. You just don't mess with this shit!
Is there an option to switch to the fan translation? Because otherwise I'd rather just pick up the PC version again so that I don't have to deal with this fucking control lag.
Edit:I like Huzzah. The kool-aid reference isn't nearly as endearing.

Well one thing that might have been a problem is that that line wasn't originally theirs. "Spoony bard" was always Square's translation, they could do whatever they wanted. Nicalis probably thought it would be in bad taste to just rip off any old translated line, fan favorite or not, so they went through and retranslated everything.

And now they're ripping off Kool-Aid in good taste?
Man, I don't know if the Wii remote sucks as a controller, or if I've just grown soft, but I'm having a lot of trouble, especially against bosses. I think I died about 10 times on the Toroko fight, and now I'm stuck at the island core.
Going for the spur on my first run was a mistake. I could really use a machine gun right about now.

Well, I hope I can play with the new graphics and the old music, the difference being that the graphics are improved while the music was downgraded.
This so hard. I dont even have Wi-fi right now, thinking about giving my friend who does my credit card number so he can buy it.

I always thought he was a robot suitcase or something.
You could always give a Nintendo points card to me and I'll buy the game in your honor. ;-)

You can still cheat with gecko, so there is a way.
But it's still cheating.

Erich, how bad is the control lag?
