I played this with my friend last night up to hidden Last Cave. The best the new music gets is "almost the same as the original," in which case, what is the point?

I agree with Tails Corra, it seems like they started at the beginning of the game, deciding to remix all of it, and they realized partway through that their remixing skills were pretty lacking so they just went for minimal changes...like removing all percussion and bass from the boss fights.

    Just yanking your chain.

Don't listen to metal much anymore but ironically the new ones i listen to can be considered as indistinguishable noise. :P Except for the new deftones album. <3

    But yeaaaaaah, off topic.

I wasn't able to pick this up yesterday - they really changed Balrog's catchphrase to something that "in-jokey"? Damn, that sucks. I'm glad Nicalis wanted to try updating the translation a bit, but this comes off as a poor attempt to be like Working Designs (who actually knew how to work in pop-culture references on the sly). And the knocks against the music make me glad they have the option for the original stuff, but I'll withhold judgment until I can actually hear it in-game. Also: no classic controller support? Is it just remote-on-side?

So far, I've only found two annoyances, and they're really minor, in fact one can be fixed right away.
    - Sound is WAY too loud compared to music. Set the sound at about half the volume of the music and it's fixed.
    - Music doesn't loop properly. There's always a tiny little pause, and it's kind of annoying, but no deal-breaker.

If anyone has been reading this thread and hearing little grievances and complains here and there and wonder if they should still buy the game, YES.

It's Cave Story. It's still Cave Story, and it's still excellent.
    Buy it.

I know it sounds mad and silly, but I don't think I will be buying the Wii-ware version. Madness, I know, coming from me of all people! I love Pixel's work to death. I was ecstatic about the graphical upgrade, and wary but optimistic about the musical remixes. Nicalis always rubbed me the wrong way, but he was wise enough to really include Pixel in the port process.

But after hearing about the new translation and the sound issues (well, issue) I don't think I can bring myself to play the new version... as many have said before, the closer something is to perfection, the more glaring the minor errors become.

I... I suppose if I could just give my money straight to Pixel, I would get this in a heartbeat.

Yeah, I agree with Ridley - just turn the sound to about 50%, and change it from the new music to the old music. Problems solved, and you get to play with the improved graphics. The new translation doesn't bother me that much. It does make me wonder what the hell Nicalis et al were doing that caused this to be delayed for so freaking long, though.

Yeah, after all, the original translation was a fan translation. It's not like it was the OFFICIAL thing and now this new translation is disrespecting the original. In fact, in many places, it improves on it with better english.

The music not looping perfectly is just about the only unfixable problem.

What if they make DS and PSP ports too, if I decide not to buy those it's also an excuse not to fork money over?

How much money does Pixel get from a single sale? You can bet I'd give him much more if I could donate directly. I'm not making any excuses, I want to give him money. But I'm not paying $12 so I can give him $1 for a seriously flawed product.

I'll tell you who absolutely SHOULD get the game on WiiWare...anyone who doesn't have a gaming controller for their PC. I can't tell you how much better I am at the game just because I'm not using a stupid keyboard to play it. Is anyone else having trouble with the map, though? For some of the longer levels, it just sort of blurs on the far right side of the map.

    Biggest problems
    • Retouched music is crap
    • New translation fails (Huzzah is taken out and replaced by "Oh Yeah")
    • Music doesn't wrap back to the beginning of the track properly

The sound. The sound effects are too high in the mix, and it's really grating until you go into the options and turn it down just below the halfway mark. Also the redone music isn't as good as the original music, and that can be fixed by setting the music to original.

Finally, the original music is slightly sped up and there's a slight moment of silence when it loops. The music also pauses when you enter a door.

That being said, I don't consider those serious flaws. It's still a great game.

Sounds like it's mostly the music. New music is apparently not very good and though there's an option to use the old music, it's not 100% accurate (looping is off apparently).

Go ahead and buy it, it's just not worth it to me. The new graphics are nice but they don't offset the rest of it, which I'm not really a fan of: the new music is awful, the old music doesn't loop right, and the new translation is worse than the old one. There's no benefit for me over playing it on the computer.

The original japenese version of Balrog's catchphrase was just an excited yell sound.
    Huzzah fits much better.

Changing a fan favorite catchphrase into a stupid pop-culture reference is completely baffling to me. It's not as if the guy who did the fan translation would have minded if you used his line.

It's quite possible that whoever did the official translation purposely didn't look at the fan-translation, to avoid influence. A generic excited yell sound leaves a lot to interpretation. I'm sure we all know that any given sentence in a foreign language can be translated any number of ways.

But what do I know, I've never played this game, so I haven't had time to develop an irrational aversion to change.

I'm starting to think they changed the way some of the bosses work now. Maybe my memory is bad, but didn't you used to be able to pump missiles into Omega and get rid of most of his lifebar right away? Because I could only hit with one missile before he closed his eye up. I noticed this with the "boss" right before him as well, in that I could only ever hit with one missile before they put up a shield.
