The use of "Oh Yeaahhhh!" and the classic audio glitches are two glaring, unforgivable errors in my book. I'm really displeased with these errors the port-ers left in. Cave Stroy deserves better, really.

So did Pixel and Nicalis rape your childhood?

Nope, they're just glaring, unforgivable errors that make it not worth it to buy.

Actually, I can't remember where, but I'm pretty sure in an interview one of them confirmed it as an homage.

The audio glitch is a minor bug, I'll grant that, but the use of "Oh Yeaahhhh!" instead of "Huzzah!"? The latter is from an unofficial translation. If anything, "Huzzah!" is an error, not "Oh Yeaahhhh!".

Neither is an error because both are just translations. Or, alternatively, both are errors because it really is "Dorya!!"

The point is that they changed something beloved to the fans. It's like changing Robotnik to Eggman. Even though Eggman is what they wanted all along, it sounds ridiculous compared to the original and people still want it changed back.

Heck, there's even a remix that incorporates the "Huzzah." It's part of the character.

No. I'm entirely convinced it's not on purpose.

It's kind of hard to argue when of all phrases they chose that one.

Especially for that specific action. Definitely struck me as homage territory, too.

So in essence there is no Cave Story like the original. This game is a weird redux that is offputting to fans of the orignal translation.

Same, I never played the original, I've just heard about it for yeeeears. It strikes me, as a newbie, as a really well put together, charming platformer. I actually do like the older music better though (especially the rather Metroid sounding item pick up tune).

I dunno, I kinda read Balrog's "Oh yeeeeaaah!" in a sort of screechy, animesque exclamatory voice, same as "Huzzah!" would be delivered. It fits. It's not an antiquated British victory holler, but it's workable.

Yeah, not so much. Their translation of Lunar was the one where in the first 10 minutes of the game the main character talks about eating his Wheaties.

Cringe inducing or not, I loved the Lunar games...other than the abomination they released on the GBA/DS...or whichever portable they put it on.

Lunar 1 & 2 for the Sega CD were wonderful games. :D

I found them hilarious at the time, but nowadays I'd find them out of place. They toned that sort of thing down through the years, fortunately.

As for Cave Story, I think anyone who never played the PC version will enjoy the WiiWare version. I also think a good number of people who did play the PC version will still enjoy it. I guess it depends on whether you consider the flaws listed earlier in the thread to be major or minor. :)

Okay, is anyone else having some technical problems with the game? Especially in the Outer Wall area, I find that disturbingly often, whenever I go through a door into another area (including the small cave with the stopwatch,) the game will just freeze completely and I have to manually turn off my Wii. Is this a common thing? If not, what should I do about it?

I would not call the "Oh yeah!" line nearly that bad, certainly. It still bugs me a ton, though. Add this to the obvious audio issue and I'd say this is a deal-breaker for me. I feel Nicalis (NOT Pixel) dropped the ball.

    Update on audio issues:

    Source at TinyCartridge.com
I’ve heard a lot of grievances about the (optional) new music in the Cave Story WiiWare remake ever since it released yesterday, but I chalked it off to nitpicking, unappeasable fans of the original game just finding anything they can to complain about.

As it turns out, though, there are some serious issues with the audio not playing as intended. Yann van der Cruyssen (Knytt Stories), who composed the remixed soundtrack, acknowledged and explained the problems:

“As you’ve all noticed, there’s a lot of weird things going on with the audio, for instance: drum tracks not playing (there is actually drums in the music files we provided), instrument changes delayed, unbalanced mixing. I discovered this yesterday by watching “Let’s Play” videos, and am as disappointed as you.

Nicklas and me have [asked many times] to sound check the game, but that’s not really something we had control over.

Of course, the music is still questionable, but I just wanted to say a few words about it since people start to associate us with all the audio oddities in that game. That’s quite embarrassing, especially because I feel like we’ve done the job seriously considering limitations we had and time we spent sorting them out.”

Van der Cruyssen added that he talked with producer Tyrone Rodriguez, who said Nicalis is considering updating the game when it uploads the European version. The composer also noted the team might change Balrog’s “OH YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH” battle cry back to the “Huzzah” used in Aeon Genesis’s original translation.

As for issues with sound effects, Canabalt creator Adam “Atomic” Saltsman, who spruced up the new background tiles in Cave Story, offered this advice: “set the sound FX to one third volume!”

    First bold: Bwuh?

Second bold: Wonder if they might update the US version as well...

Third bold: Yeah, everyone should definitely do this.

It'd be neat if the composer could release what the music was actually supposed to sound like for everyone.

Or if the updated version has it play properly. I think it'd be interesting to give it a fair shot with, you know, all of the music there and whatnot.

I can't bring myself to be upset at the Oh Yeah!/Huzzah thing because I've been buying anime after watching it with fan translations first for a long time, and have seen things like this happen too many times to get up in arms. It's sad that the developer wasn't in touch with the community enough to realize how much of a faux pas this would be, but I'm not really personally offended. I'd actually be more irritated with grammatical errors in the professional translation, to be honest

I'm finding playing CAVE STORY unbearable because of the controller

I tried plugging in a Gamecube controller to the first port and it isn't recognized, and nobody in town carries the classic controller anymore for some reason

If they change "Oh yeah" back to "Huzzah" I will never forgive them, because they didn't listen to a goddamn word from the fans when we said the new music was terrible. Yet they didn't change it, and now they're considering changing some minor line that is said maybe three times in the whole game that is still a correct translation anyway. "Oh yeah" is not a problem. Bad new music and incorrectly looping old music is. If that isn't fixed then I don't even know what Nicalis is doing.

As someone who has played the original PC version, I have to say that I do enjoy the port. Yeah, the remixes are hit-or-miss (And admittedly, mostly miss), but I really enjoy the new graphics. And of course, the gameplay's still intact, which is the most important part. Plus, I love Boss Rushes ;)

About the "Huzzah!" thing, I understand why a lot of people are miffed about it, especially if you're also a fan of DeceasedCrab (Every time Balrog speaks I swear I read it in his voice). It's different people, different translation, and to be honest, the first time I saw him bust through the door with an "OH YEAAAAAAAAAAH!"? I laughed. Aside from the translators not knowing the memetic nature of Balrog's catchphrase in the fanbase, I think they did a really good job with the translation.

And yeah, if they made a patch ONLY to "fix" Balrog's catchphrase, that would be stupid. The audio glitches come first, I'd really like to hear the remixes they way they were intended to be heard and give them another chance.

You know, I didnt find the remixed music all that bad. And oddly enough, all non drum intensive or completely lacking drum songs were pretty damn nice. If what that article says is true, that would make a huge difference in taking the music from horrible/acceptable to acceptable/possibly good.

Missing drums was basically one of the major problems, but if you pay attention to the songs the line about some instrument changes being delayed makes a ton of sense.

I would have to run through the whole remixed soundtrack again to make a final judgement, but I feel like if what they said was true its nowhere near as bad as we thought.

However, how that could happen baffles my mind. Also, to prove that point they really should put up a piece or two for judging.

Edit: I just went to play, and noticed the music that plays for the game on the wii menu (before you choose to load it) plays the main theme with drums. Also the instruments sound much better and change and such. If thats any indication of how the music should sound, then I think it will be a big difference.

Yeah I used analog for MM9 on 360. Analog is only a real problem with 2D games that recognize 8 directions. If it only recognizes 4 it's fine, because if you divide the circle of movement into parts you get 4 fairly large sections to move you in the direction you want.
