The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I've an mp3 file, a lecture, that is 120 minutes long. I want to burn it to a CD so I can listen to it in my car, but not necessarily in order ("Ooo, there was good info back at the 47ish minute mark, I wan to go there"). IOW, I want to be able to jump around in the lecture. If I burn it to a CD as is, jumping around will be rather difficult since I'd have to ffwd to the 0:47:00 ish mark manually. But if I cut it up into 5 minute chunks, it's a simple matter to skip to track 9 and go from there.
So what I'd like is a free program that will let me do that as simply as possible.
I tried Audacity, but I couldn't quite figure out how to do that simply and quickly. The interface was less than intuitive.
It's actually pretty easy in Audacity, but the option is hard to find if you don't know where you are looking.
1. Move the cursor to where you want the first split to occur
2. Go to Tracks > Add label at selection or use the shortcut ctrl+b
3. repeat 1 and 2 for how many tracks you want.
4. Go to file > export multiple
5. Make sure "split based on... labels" is selected
6. decide what to name the thing and where to save it.
A nice trick I've always liked using is to open Windows Movie Maker, and then add that sound item to the movie (no video). Then chop up the bits like you want, and save each off individually (Movie maker will even convert to sound files instead of video if only sound is present). Then you just have to burn to disc.

This should work, old dos command that should still be present.

And movie maker is free!
That worked incredibly well. Thanks!
