It's been a while since I've been down there, but Lockheed Martin's Skunkworks is right outside of town. They have the original U-2 spy plane and an SR-71 Blackbird outside you can go visit. A few neat airplane like things to do around there, as it's a hub for secret defense contractor development. I loved going there when I was a kid.
Go to LA it is like [strike]30[/strike] 80+ minutes away (also a shithole).
Best of luck!
Fixt. Also, it can be closer to 2 hours with traffic.
Plus, that's not even "proper" LA. It'll take you at least 60 minutes with no traffic just to get to the edge of the valley... and there's nothing fun to do in the valley either.

Why is the OP even going to Lancaster?
Yeah, it might take an hour to get to the edge of the valley, but if it is not rush hour, you should be able to get to Los Angeles/Hollywood in about 25 minutes from there. Probably not going to be very fun if the children are young and hate riding in the car, but when the alternative is staying in Lancaster, well... the drive may be worth it.

Thats what I was afraid of, Thanks anyway.
I'm going to Lancaster because my wife has to go to a conference there. We live in Fresno which is about 4 hours away and she doesnt want to drive there and back alone so I'm tagging along. If I could go without taking the kids I could just sit in the lobby and play my DS or read which is what I would to on a saturday anyway We'll see

Get a babysitter for the kids and leave them at home. You'll spend more time driving to/from Lancaster than you will at any activity in the metro area.
I need to spend the day in Lancaster CA, have 2 small kids, whats there to do in the area?
I'm not sure why people are saying LA is 30 minutes away. You can't even get to the base of the 14 Freeway, where it meets the 5, in that amount of time (maybe if you were driving 90mph at 2AM on a weekend, I don't know...)
There's the Blackbird Airpark, which might be of interest to aviation buffs. It's a freebie, if I recall correctly.
There's also a Children's Museum. Not being a child, and never having visited it, can't say much either way about it.
The Jean Paul Getty Museum is awesome, but it's about 1.5 hours away as well, and small children are unlikely to be patient enough. It's a really nice musuem, both in it's collections and it's own architechture.
Wait. YES! We have parks! Hell, we have an entire national forest (oh wait, except some jackass decided it'd be cool to burn that down).
Wildflowers should be peaking in mid-April. The Poppy Reserve can be pretty awesome on a good year. You will need to watch the kids carefully, as you do need to be aware of your surroundings (rattlesnakes - I've never seen one, but they're out there), and they are very strict about staying on the paths with no deviations. There are few flowers currently, but the wildflowers are incredibly fussy, and rarely follow predictions. I was out here on one of the better years, and it was well worth seeing. It's only 15 minutes out of town, $8 to park, and basically not a big deal to drive by, see if there's anything to see, and drive back without having to park and pay if not.
For the rest of you:
Dammit, I work and live here, have some sympathy! :P

Eat at Goldfish Japanese Restaurant in Palmdale if you like sushi. Delicious and cheap.
Other than the poppies, erm... the mall? There really isn't a lot to do there, as mentioned, unless you want to drive out of the valley and go down below.

Hey man, I've got a pal up in Lancaster. We would always offer to drive up from the valley to hang out with him so he didn't have to drive, but he would insist on coming down just so he didn't have to be in Lancaster. The only reason why he lives up there is because he works for Boeing. I suspect that he'd be out of there in 2 seconds if he had the opportunity.

It's not for kids really, but I read this on Wikipedia...
In Lancaster there is the so called Two Pines Church, chapel in which have been setted many scenes of Tarantino's film, Kill Bill.

The closest zoo is the Los Angeles Zoo, which is about 1.5 hours away.
