I was chatting with my wife and she suggested I post here to let people know about the cool game table we built. It was mentioned in a post on wired.com's GeekDad: DIY Gamer Builds Amazing Game Table
Along with using this table, we also broadcast our games live when we play. More information for this can be found at: Live D&D
Our next game is Sunday (3/28/2010) at 1pm PST. If you want to tune in, the feed will be at: Live D&D Channel at UStream.tv
If you have any questions, please let me know! 8-)
Well you should. Good people. Just stay away from SE++. Also the videos from that link don't seem to be working. Did you use the "wiimote+projecter=smartboard" thing for this? And if so did you have to customize the code at all, or is it just straight-up? Details, man!
Thanks for the tips! I documented most of this (links can be found on the wired.com article). I step through all the processes for building it, etc. The videos that are on ustream.tv are just the same as the ones on youtube (in the wired.com article). Those seem to work fine.
Yes, I used the wiimote+projector, but I put the projector under the table and use a "rear-projection" method to get a nice big surface with no shadows! I hate shadows from projectors. :-)
I use the Wiimote Whiteboard app from Johnny Chan and modified it to allow me to switch between left and right click. Finally I use the MapTool program (available for free at rptools.net). This handles all the mapping, vision, token tracking, etc.
Really though, anyone could get this setup working with no "custom code". I'm just a software developer, so I like to tweak things to my whims.
Currently watching the videos, so far this seems pretty impressive, well done!
Thanks! I mostly did it for our gaming group, but as I did it, I figured documenting it and sharing with the D&D community might encourage others to make their own versions.
A cool possibility? Two game tables can easily be networked! This means you could play with remote players on their game tables! Heh... haven't done it yet, but it's an interesting idea.
this looks awesome! great stuff, when i first read the part about your tunnel system i thought there were gonna be trap doors in it or something haha the digital is defiantly a better solution. im curious in your research did you find any projectors with a smaller throw distance? our game plays on coffee table height tables so that 5 foot distance would be a deal breaker for us.

They do exist, but they are much more pricy. I'm holding out for a cheaper and bigger version of the Microsoft Surface. Then I'll write my own "cool" system. Similar to the one that already exists on MS Surface, but better. The surface shouldn't manage the "rules" of the game. Just help with the immersion.
It's that time again! We are playing live tomorrow:
Sunday (4/11/2010) at 1pm PST. If you want to tune in, the feed will be at: Live D&D Channel at UStream.tv
Feel free to stop by and say HI! I try to give shoutouts to everyone I can.

Hey!
We even have a tabletop RPG thread.
