I found my UMD. Actually, it was sitting right there in my drawer, lol.
I think I even have an old save game here somewhere so I can probably just jump into a battle to compare the lag between the UMD and the game running off the memory stick.
edit: Bleh. I'm getting a read error from the UMD. I'll probably have to crack it open tomorrow and clean it. Fucking UMDs.
Before this thread is locked I might as well give my initial opinions on FF IX.
It's pretty good so far, you're kinda thrown right into the story but I liked how they let you play as each main character for a bit. The battles are pretty slow honestly but far from a deal breaker.
I'm enjoying the replay more than I thought I would. It has a very particular charm, especially in the beginning. The way the intro is handled is pretty fantastic, and it's interesting how long you go without fighting a real battle. Also, there's so many little hidden items tossed around the beginning areas (less so as you move on, which is a shame).
My biggest issue is that save points are few and far between (it's easily 45 minutes between the first save point and the second), and the degree to which you can suddenly die because of how goddamn slow the ATB is in early fights with only one character.
The King of the Jump Rope item that you get for 1000 jumps doesn't actually give you anything, just a key item. The cards are nice but they are nothing that you don't get later anyway.

Thanks. I figured.
Plus it's literally impossible not to miss something in the game, right? I mean if you go for Excalibur II, I assume you'll be skipping lots of things.

Iirc there are around 30 items that cannot be acquired when you head into disc 4, so you really have to plan your entire game around getting to disc 4 knowing exactly where to stop on the way.
As far as I know it is possible to get a perfect save and Excalibur II, but man I would never try it.
Where was the minigames, the cities, farming money to buy some spells and equipment!
I know this makes me the odd man out, but this is precisely why I'm enjoying XIII so far. I don't have to get OCD'd into spending a hundred hours on little sidebullshit and completely forget the significance of where the plot has been headed because I'm so entranced with winning a damn Chocobo race with less than zero seconds on the clock or dodging 200 lightning bolts. But then I don't have much patience anymore. I want my games to tell their damn story and then be done.

You didn't have to do that stuff in earlier games though.
It was there, but so was the story if you just wanted to get on with it.

Its funny to me that you use FFX. Its been a while since I played it, but I believe it is the best example of "you can finish the game, or grind and hunt ultimate weapons - up to you".

Ummm... I never said that in the original quote.

My mistake. You were obviously referring to the other FF game that has both "winning a damn Chocobo race with less than zero seconds on the clock or dodging 200 lightning bolts" in it. Apologies.
Edit: What Rust said. Sorry, I got stupid all over myself. Need to be more clear.

First of all, I was using X as a point of reference that the series had progressively gotten worse since VI/VII. Considering it's really just XIII with more fluff to it.
Second of all, what I'm saying is that MundaneSoul quoted someone else, and put my name on it. That original quote is not mine.

Ah sorry, I deleted the wrong name off the quote tree. I'll change it. And yeah, X was not the best example, just the first couple of things that popped into my head.

any pointers on set up and stuff for the last guy (ffxiii)? It's been taking me too long to kill him and something always happens where most of my guys are stopped and my leader will get nuked.

What the fuck, Square?
STOP IT! STOP IT! STOP IT! KU-PHEH!
Yeah. Don't bother.
I think the highest I ever got in that game was 200 or 300 and something before I gave up.
Yeah, I'm going to have to put my OCD/completionism aside and ignore it. Sigh.
Thanks. I figured.

the excalibur II is in no way meant to actually be acquired
it's more like some kind of weird meta comment on super-complicated rumors, because this one is actually true
getting to that sword is a game in itself
a tedious, joyless one

Wait, how is having a little reward for speedrunners a bad thing?
"Want to know how to do this thing? Go to this web address to find out!"
Roughly 2 years later, approximately 15% of the guide is rendered useless because they removed it from the site.
Yeah, I'd say that's pretty dumb.
Eh, speedrunning in and of itself isn't bad.
Requiring you to open the lid to glitch out the FMV's to have enough time though, that was pretty dumb.

Of course, there's not a lot to compare it to. Like, for example, that complete abomination of a "racing minigame" in FFX.
