Laptop Buying Help Please

MikeRyuMikeRyu Registered User regular
Hey guys. I'm looking to get myself one of them fancy portable computermajigs and being a fairly unknowledgable but cautious guy I thought I'd run this past you lot first.

This is the first laptop I've bought so I'm not entirely sure of the do's and don'ts.

Basically I need something for writing, web browsing and media playing and that's about it. No gaming or editing. Not that I'm against those features but primarily I'd like a laptop that can do the basics very well.

It's going to be my main PC so I'm unsure whether to go for a lightweight laptop or go for the full desktop replacement type.

This is the model I've been eyeing up.

I'd quite like to have a good sized screen, that one is a 17 inch.

I have about £350 - £400 to spend which is about £550 - $600 and I'd like to make that money go as far as possible.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm sure you have much better educated opinions on this than I do.

It all depends on what you want to do with your laptop. I have had large desktop replacement laptops before and it was basically like a desktop. It never moved from my desk because it was heavy, hot and had terrible battery life. Now I have a 13" laptop that I use much more, it's no good for gaming but it has great battery life and is light so I use it far more than my old desktop replacement.

In my opinion the most important things to consider when buying a laptop is budget and what you want to do with it. If possible get some hands on time with a laptop in a store even if you still buy it online. This will give you an idea of how well it's made, how heavy it is and if there are any odd design choices that will be an annoyance later on. I would also recommend going with intel instead of AMD even if it costs a bit more, currently intel outperforms AMD by a considerable margin.

You should be able to get a good laptop for the budget you have.
