The only units that retreat are surviving units from the losing player; that exception means that all the loser's units which took part in the battle retreat, even if some were routed during the battle.

'kay. I buy that. I guess I'm too used to super-tight rules writing.

Welcome to the world of Fantasy Flight Games! CitOW is the best written of theirs. The first time we played Runewars, the owner had printed out a couple of rules guides from BGG so we would be able to figure everything out.

I think A Game of Thrones has the best written FFG rules I've seen.

    Year 3, Autumn

Silhouette, feeling the weight of conscience upon her, cannot help but reveal her true nature and abandon the tasks the evil Waiqar set for her.

Revealing their True Nature – Each hero not matching a player's affiliation deserts him unless he spends 1 influence (or 2 influence if the hero is opposite to his faction's alignment.)

    And Waiqar has no Influence.
Wings of Regrowth and Dwarfen Fire Bombs are discarded.

Decisions for 2 Influence or 1 Tactics must now be made. I'll wait on the map for that so the Influence/Tactics amounts can be up to date.

The Daqan decide that they need to be a bit more tactical in this situation, since brute force wasn't working as well as they'd hoped.
    tactics please

Waiqar arranges to stockpile influence to deal with unruly factions in the future.

Bye, bye, Silhouette. Take two influence.

Elves fall en-masse to the charge.

An Archer dies, and a Warrior takes one point. Simultaneous with the footmen:

Sorceress magic flashes among the Daqan ranks, and the humans, remembering the stories of their defeated comrades, falter.

The footmen charge in right after the knight, killing one of the warriors before he could react, and inflicting more mayhem in their continual search for more cocaine. One of the less effective squads of footmen are bewitched by a sorceress into thinking some sand is in fact cocaine, and sit the rest of the battle out trying to remove dirt from their noses.
Rout a footman after he attacks, deal 2 damage killing a warrior and dealing 1 more damage.

1 dmg, nothing, nothing, 1 dmg

So as I understand it, after the battle:

Daqan win with 4 standing units to 3 (knight and 3 footmen with a routed footman vs 2 sorceresses and a warrior with 2 routed bowmen). The warrior and sorceresses flee, and the routed elven units are destroyed.

    That look right?

In the north, a battle force silently approaches the whispering forest.

Two necromancers and 5 reanimates move from Castle Greyskull in the Shadow Peaks to the Whispering Forest.

Pause to see which of his many tactics cards are going to be played before battle by the Uthuk.

The drums of war are heard as the Uthuk prepare for battle with the interlopers.
    Waiqar:
    2: two necromancers
    4: 5 reanimates

    Uthuk:
    1: flesh ripper
    2: berserker

Uthuk to draw for the flesh ripper, then Waiqar for the necromancers, then back to Uthuk for the berserker. Any hits/routs from the Uthuk will be applied to reanimates.

The necromancers attempt dark magics, but are unable to do much more than send a weak bolt at the enemy.
    Necromancers: 1 damage, miss

Uthuk applies one damage, then draws for the berserker

The shambling horde crowds around the crying axe-wielder to console him and prepare him to join their ranks, though they go a bit overboard in dismembering it. More work for the necromancers to do, after they finish examining the rune stone discovered nearby.
    4 reanimates: 1 damage, 1 rout, 1 orb, 1 damage

Orb resolves first - the reanimates overrun the berserker and tear it to pieces.

Waiqar turn still; need to examine that runestone.

Another rune secured; a dark crow is sent winging back to Skull Mountain with the news. Deep laughter is heard booming from the dread citadel, and Waiqar orders Mad Carthos to be brought to him. The hero goes on one knee before his master and offers a shining crystal, the Timmoran Shard. Waiqar is certain now, he has gained enough power to rule over this land and remake it in darkness.
Timmoran Shard - Turn in at one of your strongholds to receive a Dragon Rune.
Discard false rune from WA; place new runes in WA (dragon) and in Boneland (false).
Reveal dragon runes in WA, WB, WC, Fools Rapids, Shadow Peaks, and the Whispering Forest, claiming victory.

I think this game demands a lot more direct multiplayer competition than the last two games have had. The winners have basically been whichever of two pairs managed to get luckier.

(No offense to the winners :P)

The way the map set up, it made it very difficult for the south to effectively attack the north, and vice versa. I had an easy objective (made easier by the city next door to draw the tactics I needed), then the bonus runes were placed, then Silhouette managed to find that shard. I was pretty much expecting to lose her, though, so had to maneuver to get the shard back into the hands of Carthos in a safer location.

Uthuk was just very unlucky early, though; that plus the water placement restricting access fatally slowed his development, and then Daqan decided to go after the elves instead of turning north to try to get into position to slow me down.

Thanks for running this, Mordenthral. Definitely a fun game, and it seems to work well in the forum setting. And nice work on the card drawer, admanb; helped everything go quite smoothly.

Yeah, I figured I could steamroller over the elves far easier than making the trekk north to slow you down.

Unfortunately, the elves slowed me down and the Uthuk weren't able to do the same to you :(

Not so much, I will forever fear and respect razorwings. I do wish it lasted a while longer but oh well. Thanks for running it mord and thanks to admanb for the card thing. I'd love to try another game, it does work really well in this format.
