Polish President & Other Top Ranking Officials Killed in Crash
On the way to a commemoration for 22,000 Poles killed by Stalin in WW2 the plane carrying the President of Poland, his wife, Army Chief of Staff, National Bank President and Deputy Foreign Minister crashed in Russia killing all 96 people on board. There is no word on reason for the crash but the plane involved was a 20 year old plane and the type of plane was not one known for being the best of the best. They had considered upgrading but were concerned about the costs involved.
Poland is planning early elections and an acting president is in place.
There were 6 crashes in the last 5 years with this plane type. I still can't believe they put that many government officials on one plane. The effect on their military is going to be huge.
According to this article the plane attempted multiple approaches and should have been heading to a different airport.

Heard about this as I was getting ready for work. Cannot fathom how they could put so many important people on one flight. If I were a crazier man I would start to develop some sort of conspiracy theory. Knowing the crazies in this country, it would probably be that socialist Hussein Obama wanted to exact revenge for his muslim brothers in iraq so he is taking out members of the coalition of the willing.
The dude was not a nice guy, or a good president, though. Hella homophobic and whatnot.
still, it's a bummer when anyone dies needlessly
also, imagine how crazy shit is going in poland right now, there's no way this is a plus for them
Seriously!

Also it is really sad that it happened when it did. This was to mark a huge improvement in Polish-Russian relations.
I hope this doesn't disrupt the reconciliation between Russia and Poland
If the Russians handle this well I think it can help relations further. The way the decide to reach out to Poland during the next few weeks which are bound to be very difficult can show how committed they are.

I am surprised they had that many high ranking officials all on one poorly maintained plane.
