I've been watching the videos on the website over the last week. This game wasn't even on my radar until I stumbled upon the SMART video. This game looks shit-hot to me now. I'll be really interested to see if the single/multi seamless upgrade system is really seamless.

I'm thinking that the SMART system will go one of three roads: 1) super tight and well done right off the bat, 2) it doesn't live up to anything good said about it and is broken immediately, or 3) it relases a little broken and they scramble to fix it up to "usable" a month or two after release.

My hope is that they don't let the story slip. I think this setting is ripe for a Bioshock quality story and it would be so disappointing if they let the story fall through in favour of a lot of shock and awe.

Probably setting your expectations too high on the single player front. I could be wrong, but this is splash damage who is known almost exclusively for multiplayer. The setting is very inspired though. Really can't wait to get my hands on this game. Since Quake Con it has really jumped to the top of my most anticipated list.

From all indications, SP is just MP/coop with bots, and some extra cutscenes. And maybe a couple of in-map scripted 'cutscenes'

Yeah I can't see the SP being much more than that. Especially since at this point they still haven't talked up anything besides the movement system and MP. There has been next to nothing about a story, or any characters in the story, other than your customizable avatar.

It seems like they want the players to feel whichever side they pick are the good-guys.

Queue shades of gray story of conflict over dwindling resources on a man made island. I think that's about as deep as it's going to get. I doubt we are going to get anything personal in the mix either, because that would really be hard to work into the multiplayer/coop side of things.

    I don't hate it

    I'm just extremely skeptical

And their marketing campaign of "our game is gonna be soooo revolutionary" isn't really helping

I'd be all over it, but I can't really justify an upgrade to Vista right now. I was all fired up to buy the damn thing and everything when I heard about it.

It’s an eight-person co-op that pits one team against another or against an eight-man AI. One team is police, one is the “bad guys.” Each team has a mission objective that must be achieved while a clock ticks down. The police objective usually revolves around doing something “good” (like infiltrating a bad-guy hideout or saving a biological warhead from being captured), while the bad guys’ have a similar but antagonistic objective (like defend said hideout or steal said warhead).

way to miss the whole point of the game, preview dude

What point? Given Splash Damage's rhetoric about "blurring the lines between Single Player and Multiplayer", this might be how the game is being promoted. It's not "Multiplayer with Bots"....it's "8-player Co-op!"

I hope there are a few different game modes. Something like Halo2's oddball I think it was called, that was kind of a one strong dude vs everyone else thing, could be amazing with SMART.

I think ZE was referring to the writer there calling one team the good guys and the other team the bad guys.

You're thinking of the juggernaut mode, and yes it would be hella fun with the SMART system.

Ah ok. Obviously the narrative and back story surrounding the two factions is more complicated than "good" vs "bad", but maybe that's how Splash Damage is referring to the two teams when talking to the press.

SD makes a big deal about the gray morality of the game every time they talk about the game. The different factions view the same thing different, or have different intel about an object-- the object Security (or whatever they are called) thinks is a dirty bomb could be a bomb, or it could be some kind of vaccine, like the rebels think, or it could be something else entirely.

I somehow dont give two craps about the grey morality in the game.

I look at it this way.

    Both sides are being dicks.

To clarify, i would find it boring if they werent both a bunch of dicks. Two assholish groups seems more fun than one goody two shoes one and one classicly evil one.

Right. And that might be a side effect of this process - he only got to play as Security, after all, and so he went away with a hilariously biased view of the situation. I find that kind of awesome.

    Impressions:

It was excellent. There wasn't a lot of information about how certain actions work (such as reviving) but that's to be expected, its a demo. Our team did pretty well, we were escorting a bomb defusing robot through a industrial dock like area, the same they showed in the tech demo last year, if anyone remembers. I mainly played soldier as one was required for the first stage of the mission (blowing up the door) we had a Medic and two engineers as well.

It's very fast, you feel like you die rather fast, but it was good, not frustrating or anything like that. You can have your health boosted by an ally (I think it was the medic) and cover is there if you need it. It seems like class skills and diversity are important for a team. My brother and I (he was the medic) did a lot better than the 2 engineers who kept running off solo. I didn't get a lot of time (demo was only 10 min) to figure out the powers so I was mostly grenading and using my rifle.

The other thing I haven't mentioned is customization. They gave us a short time to create a character, changing their physical appearance and clothing. There is A LOT of customization there, I barely got to scratch the surface of that. My understanding was that the character is totally persistent and follows you from SP to MP.

    TL;DR

This game is awesome, play it.

Yes, oddball is a gametype in all the Halos. You grab the ball and try and hold it for a set amount of time (it's cumulative), but while you're holding it you can't use any other weapon but your melee (which becomes a one hit kill), and I think you don't run as quickly either. There's also a free for all and a team variant.

Alright, finally put in my preorder. I ended up going with Amazon since I had a $10 game credit and I really like that Psycho Mask preorder bonus. The rest I don't particularly care about, but the mask is pretty sweet.

Reminds me of Christopher Nolan's Scarecrow, and anything I can do to be more like Cillian Murphy is a okay in my book.
