Who are these people? I am an old man, and these things scare me.
When I started my first university degree in 2003 I pretty much stopped watching TV, gave up on radio and limited myself to a small group of friends. I wasn't quite a hermit, but my exposure to media and popular culture dropped off a lot.
Now some years later I find that I don't really know anything about what's popular these days. Everything is new and scary.
Music:
The last time I enjoyed the music on the radio was in the mid to late 90s. There was some really good RnB out at the time that still relied on some of the old motown style hooks and disco/funk from previous generations. Like this was pretty awesome.
Apparently all of the disco/funk stuff that I used to like is now made (ironically?) by hipster/indie bands. Rap music is made by little wayne and I don't get it at all. RnB is really boring since all the instruments and now most of the samples have been replaced by pure synth beat machines. I don't understand anything about Lady Gaga. Most of my music comes from plundering electronica music off of Grooveshark.
TV:
TV has apparently gotten better. I stopped watching TV right around the the height of Reality TV, when networks stopped paying writers and instead just aired back to back episodes of Survivor, Big Brother and Who Wants to be a Millionaire. The last series I've really watched to completion was The West Wing.
Apparently HBO's been making some good stuff? I remember seeing bits of the first season of the Sopranos, and it seems like since then people have written some good dramas, and even regular cable TV has gotten better shows now. There's like 30 Rock, and Dexter, and probably a bunch of other cool things.
Fashion:
I've never known how to dress. I don't know how to keep up with what's in style for this season or next season. I don't buy the majority of clothes I own, they're usually christmas gifts. So I own a lot of shirts and jeans that are about 10-12 years old now, most of which originally came from Wal-mart or maybe sears. It's all just very plain stuff, and I try to keep it as generic as possible.
However thanks to a recent relationship I have been shopping for clothes a couple of times in the past year or two. Fashion makes no sense to me at all.
I always figured if I wore stuff like this I'd be fashionable:

Who are the hot celebrities now? Male celebrities have a long shelf life so I know that the Clooneys and Pitts are still popular, but I have no idea who the young and hot leading men are. Do we still have those? Have they been replaced by Michael Cera, Jay Baruchel and their ilk? Celebrity girls are even further beyond me. I can't remember the last pretty face that was marketed at me. Jessica Alba? Angelina Jolie?
I keep up with a lot of tech and i'm on the internet constantly, but I've pretty much skipped any sort of social networking. Has something replaced Facebook yet? Tumbly, Fickly, Flickr, Bubbl.us, all of these websites are missing vowels now! Also everyone seems to have bought into smart phones now, which I've always avoided because I hate closed platforms and data plans are more expensive in Candada than I'd like.
Hell, I'm not even up to date with videogames. I have a decent PC, but pretty much all of my favorite genres (space sims, western RPGs) have dried up to just a few games or nothing at all. I refuse to play MMORPGs or anything where I pay monthly. I gave away my PSP and haven't used the Wii at all.
