Cyberpunk's an interesting genre

No really.

ShadTITLE.gif

Cyberpunk > noun [mass noun]
A genre of science-fiction set in a lawless subculture of an oppressive society dominated by computer technology.
* [count noun] a person who accesses computer networks illegally.

As BaudAttitude on NTSC-uk pointed out:
When you think about it, a major theme of cyberpunk fiction was the idea that we were heading towards an era where giant, faceless corporations would know everything about us and control every aspect of our lives, and that the very concept of privacy would be a myth. Oh, and the Japanese would be running everything.

Turns out, giant faceless corporations DO know everything about us, pretty much DO control every aspect of our lives, and privacy is more-or-less a myth by this point, but nobody really seems to mind much. So the genre seems to have kind of fizzled.

But hey, it had its moments.

Some neat Cyberpunkian games and media:

Deus Ex

DeusEx1.jpeg
Another FPS, and much like the System Shocks it has what people might describe as RPG overtones. You can augment your body, your mind and your guns, while hacking computers and wandering around a terrorist-plagued future dystopia. There’s already so much said about this game, I’ll leave it there. I hear the PS2 port removed the limb-based damage system from combat – if true, then this sucks and is another example of dumbing things down. Get the PC original instead.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DAPXMZk2iw

What a shame.

Snatcher

220px-MegaSnatcher_cover.jpg
The game's story centers around an investigator named Gillian Seed, who is assigned to investigate a breed of bioroids known as "Snatchers", who are killing humans and taking their place in society.

snatcher-msx4.png

snatchersegacd-1.png

System Shock 2

SS2.jpeg

SHODAN has taken over your ship and wants you and all beings possessing of wasted flesh obliterated.

Are you a bad enough dude to stop her?

250px-SHODAN_hires.jpg

Good luck, insect.

Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers

Devil_Summoner_-_Soul_Hackers_Coverart.png
Taking place in the near future, you hack your way into a virtual reality world called Paradigm X. While it seems like your normal MMORPG, things get a bit wonky when you get creepy messages from an unknown source, threatening to steal your soul. Before you’re sucked dry, you’re saved by a fellow named Redman, who takes the form of various animals.

For some reason, you have the souls of several other people trapped inside yourself. As you progress through the game, you’re sent on several Native American-like vision quests, where you live the final moments of these trapped souls, most of whom were demon hunters before they were killed.

Using the information you learn in taking on the roles of these people, you investigate the mysteries in the real world, and learn more about shady Algon Software Corporation, who created Paradigm X. It's sorta like that episode of the Simpsons where Homer eats the really spicy chili, except with the usual SMT theme of demonic programmers.

soulhackers-5.jpg

It's also one of many Shin Megami Tensei sidestory games, if that's your thing.

Rise of the Dragon

rotd-segacda.jpg

A western-developed graphic adventure that wants to be Snatcher but isn't. Still kind of fun.

rotd-5.png

Shadowrun

The entire pen and paper series could be mentioned here, but just in keeping with the theme:

shadowrun-gena.jpg

Regarded as one of the better recreations of the game, along with the SNES version.

Takes place in the distant future, wherein megacorporations and magic rule society, along with elves, dwarves, dragons, and other colorful figures residing in society along with humans.

shadowrungen-15.png

Fear Effect

Fear_Effect.jpg

A deranged survival horror game that takes place in the darker side of China, and occasionally hell itself.

32.jpg

Very Blade Runner esque.

200px-Blade_Runner_poster.jpg

Oh yeah, there's that too, one of the biggest known inspirations.

Other non-gaming stuff:

Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2032

BGC_OVA.png

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zV5HQbgT0TQ

The name says it all. Boomers disguised as humans are infiltrating society.

Only the Knight Sabers, a team of mercenaries using state of the art battle suits, can stop them.

Megatokyo is about to explode.

Ghost in the Shell

Ghost_in_the_shell.jpg

A legendary film about cyborgs in human society. Supposed to be really good.

220px-Gs026.jpg
Ghost in the Shell is a futuristic police thriller dealing with the exploits of the cyborg Motoko Kusanagi, a member of a covert operations division of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission known as Section 9. The unit specializes in fighting technology-related crimes.

So is cyberpunk still going? If so, talk about some other cool stuff I may have missed.

also, even though it (mostly) takes place in the modern day Dollhouse was straight-up a cyberpunk TV show.

like it totally was in every way, except it didn't need to take place "in the fuuuuuutuuuurrrrre" because we basically live in a world you can set cyberpunk stories in now.

Also neglected to mention Bubblegum Crisis.

If you can get past any 'lol anime' bias, it's a genuinely awesome show full of humanoid mecha destroying society.

Dystopia is a cyberpunk Source-engine game, and it's pretty great. There's no single-player, it's a multiplayer-versus only game ala TF2. It doesn't just have normal combat, it also has "digital combat" where people jacked into the game's cyberspace attack each other, break down Black Ice, shit like that.

    I like it!

Blame Metal Gear's success. Rise of the Dragon, on the other hand, is dirt cheap.

more than that, it usually has a sort of retro 1920's/30's style going on.

whereas Steampunk tends to derive things from Victorian England or the Wild West of America or whatever, Dieselpunk is jazz and tommyguns and biplanes and fedoras.

PA's Automata could sorta classify as Dieselpunk, in a way.

Putting Soul Hackers in the OP was evil of me, as it's the only one not playable in English.

It is being fan translated, though.

this is kind of a dumb question

steampunk is gears and brass and wood and zeppelins

dieselpunk is steel and smoke and radios and WWII fighter planes

The Third Reich’s answer to the British MBW is fully committed to a fearsome anti-armour role. Loud and lumbering, this behemoth crashes through the underbrush with its mere presence instilling dread in enemy tank crews. While proving highly effective against American Shermans, and the Soviet KV-1s and T-34s, it's lack of speed and maneuverability made it desperately vulnerable to anti-tank infantry.

    Key Features-
-Cannon terminates in a tightened muzzle break that employs a Gerlich effect.
-Standard tank issued entrenching tools and tarpaulin.
-Free hand clamp used as self righter, and to carry extra loads of equipment.
-Hatch leads to small compartment for a one man surveillance and
    communications crewman

Steampunk and Dieselpunk and all those other sub-genres essentially use the same storytelling tropes, thematics, and concepts from Cyberpunk.

They just change the technology, environment, and aesthetic style. The kinds of characters and stories you find will still be the same.

it's cyberpunk because you combine the outcast/DIY aesthetic with electronic innovations. nobody in cyberpunk is nice
