No really.
Cyberpunk > noun [mass noun]
A genre of science-fiction set in a lawless subculture of an oppressive society dominated by computer technology.
* [count noun] a person who accesses computer networks illegally.
As BaudAttitude on NTSC-uk pointed out:
When you think about it, a major theme of cyberpunk fiction was the idea that we were heading towards an era where giant, faceless corporations would know everything about us and control every aspect of our lives, and that the very concept of privacy would be a myth. Oh, and the Japanese would be running everything.
Turns out, giant faceless corporations DO know everything about us, pretty much DO control every aspect of our lives, and privacy is more-or-less a myth by this point, but nobody really seems to mind much. So the genre seems to have kind of fizzled.
But hey, it had its moments.
Some neat Cyberpunkian games and media:
Deus Ex
Another FPS, and much like the System Shocks it has what people might describe as RPG overtones. You can augment your body, your mind and your guns, while hacking computers and wandering around a terrorist-plagued future dystopia. There’s already so much said about this game, I’ll leave it there. I hear the PS2 port removed the limb-based damage system from combat – if true, then this sucks and is another example of dumbing things down. Get the PC original instead.

What a shame.
Snatcher
The game's story centers around an investigator named Gillian Seed, who is assigned to investigate a breed of bioroids known as "Snatchers", who are killing humans and taking their place in society.
System Shock 2
SHODAN has taken over your ship and wants you and all beings possessing of wasted flesh obliterated.
Are you a bad enough dude to stop her?
Good luck, insect.
Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers
Taking place in the near future, you hack your way into a virtual reality world called Paradigm X. While it seems like your normal MMORPG, things get a bit wonky when you get creepy messages from an unknown source, threatening to steal your soul. Before you’re sucked dry, you’re saved by a fellow named Redman, who takes the form of various animals.
For some reason, you have the souls of several other people trapped inside yourself. As you progress through the game, you’re sent on several Native American-like vision quests, where you live the final moments of these trapped souls, most of whom were demon hunters before they were killed.
Using the information you learn in taking on the roles of these people, you investigate the mysteries in the real world, and learn more about shady Algon Software Corporation, who created Paradigm X. It's sorta like that episode of the Simpsons where Homer eats the really spicy chili, except with the usual SMT theme of demonic programmers.
It's also one of many Shin Megami Tensei sidestory games, if that's your thing.
Rise of the Dragon
A western-developed graphic adventure that wants to be Snatcher but isn't. Still kind of fun.
Shadowrun
The entire pen and paper series could be mentioned here, but just in keeping with the theme:
Regarded as one of the better recreations of the game, along with the SNES version.
Takes place in the distant future, wherein megacorporations and magic rule society, along with elves, dwarves, dragons, and other colorful figures residing in society along with humans.
Fear Effect
A deranged survival horror game that takes place in the darker side of China, and occasionally hell itself.
Very Blade Runner esque.
Oh yeah, there's that too, one of the biggest known inspirations.
Other non-gaming stuff:
Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2032http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zV5HQbgT0TQ
The name says it all. Boomers disguised as humans are infiltrating society.
Only the Knight Sabers, a team of mercenaries using state of the art battle suits, can stop them.
Megatokyo is about to explode.
Ghost in the Shell
A legendary film about cyborgs in human society. Supposed to be really good.
Ghost in the Shell is a futuristic police thriller dealing with the exploits of the cyborg Motoko Kusanagi, a member of a covert operations division of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission known as Section 9. The unit specializes in fighting technology-related crimes.
So is cyberpunk still going? If so, talk about some other cool stuff I may have missed.
Posts
like steampunk (which is dorky) or dieselpunk (which is rad as fuck)
like it totally was in every way, except it didn't need to take place "in the fuuuuuutuuuurrrrre" because we basically live in a world you can set cyberpunk stories in now.
how dare you leave that out
Sure thing.
Also neglected to mention Bubblegum Crisis.

If you can get past any 'lol anime' bias, it's a genuinely awesome show full of humanoid mecha destroying society.
edit: concerning the Blade Runner adventure game
hey satan...: thinkgeek amazon My post |
See, this is where you can educate me.
your actions determined whether or not you were a replicant
that is fuckin' ballin'
oh wow
I like it!
This is fucking incredible
Would you believe I've never seen it?
I tried to play it, got frustrated with the leveling system
but it's still kind of interesting
running from spider bots tossing molotovs behind you was fun
I am in fact...surprised.
Blame Metal Gear's success. Rise of the Dragon, on the other hand, is dirt cheap.
like a world war II level of technology basically
Also
What spring does with the cherry trees.
yep
if you can track it down, you should
I have watched blade runner
to be fair I really liked it?
more than that, it usually has a sort of retro 1920's/30's style going on.
whereas Steampunk tends to derive things from Victorian England or the Wild West of America or whatever, Dieselpunk is jazz and tommyguns and biplanes and fedoras.
PA's Automata could sorta classify as Dieselpunk, in a way.
It is being fan translated, though.
Supposedly Atlus was going to localize it at some point, and SCEA turned them down.
Tumblr blargh
The sequel was really good too
I still hate Eidos for canceling the third
this is kind of a dumb question
cyberpunk is body mods and virtual reality and hackerz
steampunk is gears and brass and wood and zeppelins
dieselpunk is steel and smoke and radios and WWII fighter planes

Someone uploaded some cutscenes from it. Enjoy. (Some are VERY NSFW, you've been warned.)
Need some stuff designed or printed? I can help with that.
This was a movie that I really enjoyed but I feel was severely underrated
It's all modern or sci-fi tech with the aesthetics of obsolete mechanics and that's the important part.
http://www.audioentropy.com/
did you actually want to because i would be down
They just change the technology, environment, and aesthetic style. The kinds of characters and stories you find will still be the same.
But I want the actual game!
I liked the gameplay a lot too!
it's cyberpunk because you combine the outcast/DIY aesthetic with electronic innovations. nobody in cyberpunk is nice
steampunk is like, voluntarily joining the upper class and sipping tea out of a clockwork cup
