In terms of this generation of racing games, I can't think of a single one with a battle mode. And it isn't the idea of battle modes that I'm against. Its more the idea of deathmatch that I'm against. I'd be all for competitive battle-modes with a bit more substance to them. I just don't like straight deathmatch very much. But a Capture the Flag or Domination style matches would be a lot of fun. I just always prefer to have objectives with my killing dudes. I don't like my main objective to be killing dudes.
And I've never played Mario Kart Wii. What makes the battle mode so bad in that game?

Well, some ideas is tag and keep-away. It fits in the racing format and allows for players to go ramming and launching weapons at each other BUT with a focus. It's not who comes in first, it's who doesn't come in with the 'it' status.

Well, Double Dash had that Get the Shine" or whatever multiplayer mode that was sheer awesome. Basically an elaborate game of keep-away. I'd be very happy if that were in the game.
Mario Kart Wii threw what made Battle Mode good completely out the window. Whereas before it was 2-4 players trying to get rid of the others' three balloons, it's now full of bots trying to kill each other as fast as possible in 3 minutes while infinitely respawning.
I can understand that the gameplay has been dumbed down a bit for the Wii audience, but in the process, they arbitrarily yanked out the series’ best feature.
I am referring, here, to "Battle Mode." For my friends and I, the Mario Kart series has never been about racing around a track. Ever since the series’ first installment, 1992’s Super Mario Kart, the games have featured a fantastic gameplay mode that drops players into an open arena, then challenges them to defeat each other in mortal kart combat.
You drive around and pick up the goofy attack items for which the series is well-known: Green turtle shells that smash into opponents, mushrooms that give you speed bursts, lightning bolts that miniaturize the other players. And you attack other players, all the while attempting to drive away from and avoid their attempts on your life.
It is some of the best multiplayer gaming fun I have ever had, and it’s been a staple of every entry in the Mario Kart series for the sixteen years that followed. Mario Kart Wii does in fact have a Battle Mode, but it’s not what you remember. Tearing the game open, my friends and I quickly found that they’d utterly gimped it.
It’s no longer a last-man-standing contest: Matches now last three minutes each, and if your kart takes too much damage, don’t worry! You’ll just respawn. Even worse, all battles are now played in teams of two. So while you can still have four human players, they can’t all face off against each other — and what’s the point of that?
How could they do this? I can imagine why: Since the Battle Mode, like the kart races, can be played online, changing the rules in this way makes for a better online experience. If players drop out, it doesn’t kill the whole match. And new players can be added in easily to existing matches. I get it. But there’s absolutely no reason for them to cripple the offline rule set, too.
This is a game-killing issue for me, as it’s just taken the potential fun that I will have with Mario Kart Wii from "months" to "hours."

Heh, beat me to it. What was that Shine game in Double Dash called anyways?
And also to Lucascraft: there are a bunch of racing games out there. How many this console generation currently have a mode where you and friends use in-game powerups to smack each other around(I actually want to know this, as if there are any, I may go buy them)?

Not out yet, but blur is coming.
I've never bothered to ask before, but what about that Sonic Racing game?

Alternative battle modes and track tools would make excellent DLC btw.

Absolutely. I would be willing to pay the game price plus DLC to get access to that.

The key to good DLC with this game is new game modes, a small track pack featuring those modes, and maybe some new art/sticker elements to sweeten the deal. New character models...no. However if a new character model (and all the art elements that make them) are included in a pack with new track elements and play styles. Yes!
Case in point: If Air Raid was in a DLC I'd want to see Airport art features, perhaps a 'sky' track level (drive on clouds!), and maybe a Super Jump mode, etc.
I liked that one OK, but I think better videos have come out since then. The one with the guys from Sucker Punch building an entire Infamous-themed track was the one that really did it for me:
I honestly don't have a clue where I want to even begin with this game. Do I want to plunge into the single-player and start unlocking crap? Do I want to hop online and race against people? Do I want to jump straight into the track creator with no unlocks at all and see what I can build with the bare minimum? So many options!

I'm pretty much going to go hardcore single player. Because the singleplayer also acts as the tutorial to the rest of the game. By the time your done with the story arc you've unlocked enough goodies to really get into the self modding. Also, you'll have your personal mod fleshed out, at least 1 track built (no honest, it's one of the missions), and a good handle on the weapons and missions types.

Yeah, I'm looking at it the same way. I want to get right into the track creator, but it really depends on how much of the "goodies" have to be unlocked through the career mode first.
One thing I do know, though - this comes out on May 25th, which is the last Tuesday before Memorial Day weekend - once that Friday hits, I won't be leaving my PS3's side for a good 3 days!
What sucks is, I have a nice 3 day weekend that ends Tuesday morning. Aaand then I've got 6 days on, making my next day off god damn monday right before the game comes out. So basically, I am going to be either very grumpy for lack of playing, or very grumpy for lack of sleep.

Fuuuuuuuck. I'm getting Red Dead on Tuesday. How the hell am I supposed to play Red Dead when I will be playing the ModNation demo. Why are they making me choose!?
Split/Second doesn't seem to really be in the same league as Blur and Modnation, and I think Modnation pretty heavily beats Blur just due to the customization. While Blur and Modnation may be pretty similar in mechanics, Modnation seems to have a lot more going for it beyond that.

Split/Second has some good ideas, but they definitely need to work on them; if they ever make a sequel, it'll probably be like the difference in quality between Burnout and Burnout 2.
Blur looks like it has the better weapon balance, and obviously has more people on track at a time, but I dare say that it won't have the same longevity as ModNation, since there's a near-infinite number of tracks. Definitely between those two, though.

I'm glad they're doing a demo. I'm curious if it's built on the final engine of the game, or the beta? Please let it be the final.
I'm disappointed at how limited the demo was. At least I'm hoping it's limited because the track editor barely gives you enough room to make little more than an oval track.
I still probably won't get the PSP version, but that's mostly a personal preference.
I never watch TV. Do they actually televise his advertisements? Cause they are pretty good. But I miss about 99.9% of all advertising because I watch my shows online or on dvd.

They usually get hammered on Youtube. Go hunting.
Interesting tidbit:
Gamestop, BestBuy, and Amazon are all part of the preorder deal. But so was Game Crazy. Ya. They even have their own preorder character build for their games. And it explains why there was 4 'hidden' characters. Heh. It's kinda funny and sad.

Who is the Game Crazy preorder character?

Some unknown called Nucklear? or some such. Not any licened characters.
Speeking of which, some of the future DLCs will have characters from other Sony Games. Modnation Racer version of the ICOverse characters perhaps? Oh how I would love to get the guy from SoTC as my racer.
My planned Mods so far: Lightning from FFXIII (not sure on the Kart yet, although it will probably have belts and zips on it), Laharl, Etna and Flonne from Disgaea (Karts based on Overlord's Wrath, Prinny Squad, and as-yet-to-be-decided respectively), Tycho and Gabe (with a choice of Merch, Fleshreaper, Div, Fruit Fucker, and CTS Karts at least).
Only 4 days until I get my hands on it and start unlocking stuff for them (for once, it's good to be in the UK).
EDIT - ...But not good to be me. Just got the YLOD.
EDIT 2 - Looks like I'll be getting a new PS3 then... glad I backed up every save I could the previous time I turned it on. Had to rescue my FFXIII disc though. About time I got a bigger HDD anyway, since 60GB was getting cramped.

You used the past tense "was" does that mean that they aren't getting a preorder mod and kart now?
If that's the case, I wonder if he's just gonna be a stock character now? I've seen pictures of him before but I can't seem to find a good link right away. He's wearing a World War 2 gas mask.
Here are some pictures I've found of some custom mods that people have posted. Most are from the beta or from the press, but I've also seen on other message boards that people have been playing broken street-date copies of the full game.
Kevin Butler is the best thing to ever happen to Sony in terms of advertising
Kevin Butler is fantastic, he even manages to make Jack Tretton seem cool...kind of. That video kinda of reminded me of those wonderfully hammy VHS tapes Nintendo Power used to mail out. Mainly the Star Fox 64 video.
I'm starting to show more interest in this. I'm usually not into user creator games because my imagination sucks, though. As much fun as LittleBigPlanet was, I could never do a level that didn't resemble complete ass.

On the same note, I wonder if you can link tracks together to make a tournament in MNR?
