I had a huge problem with him too until I stopped trying to cut him down, spent maybe 50+ retries on it. It's actually a pretty pointless fight for your level, you get nothing of interest from it and it respawns, so you can kill it over and over. If you do want to kill it however, just stand at a distance and dodge its magic whilst spamming Dark Hand.
First, let me say that I play a LOT of games, not only do I play a lot of games, but I approach games the same way I approach books. If I'm not hooked by the end of the first chapter or two, I put it down and find something else. Most games barely last longer than the first 2-hour play session before I pass judgement and decide not to continue playing them.
Nier is one of those games that has hooked me, though, and I'm pleasantly surprised.
I only just met Kaine so it's still early in the game, but I've spent all morning at work ready to get home and continue playing. Something about the game really hits all the right switches with me, and I'm not sure why.

I love the mix of sword play with ranged shootting fun. Dark Lance continues to be my go-to range buster. The words mixing up the character is a nice touch too. Is it just me, or is the main character getting 'darker' the more words I pick up and modify him with?
The more I play this game, the more I'm convinced this game is actually SMART. (Hint: it probably isn't.) There's stuff like the fact that the shades drop color books and broken machines, or that they sometimes seem to utter "thank you" upon dying, or that some files mention an expedition being exterminated by a "Red-Eye" and a "Legion"... Can't wait to start a new game +. Maybe I'll even be insane enough to 100% this. (I've already got five eagle eggs due to a lucky streak. :P )
And I just love the sidequests! Yeah, they're mostly errands and farming, but the story behind them is great. I especially liked the quest "The runaway boy". Best ending ever.
"Let's just chalk this up as an expensive life lesson, shall we?"
I suppose I'm part of the strange, strange crowd that just LOVES getting trolled in a game. Liked Paper Mario for the same reason.
P.S.: Solved my sidequest problem! I reloaded an earlier save, and, as it turned out, I had actually started another quest that blocked the barkeeper (the quest was "The runaway boy", by the way). It's strange that Cavia sometimes throws the player a bone like this (for example, you automatically succeed on fishing for shaman fish if you screw up five times on the right beach)...

The more I play this the more I keep getting this ICO/SoTC vibe going on. The art direction, the music, the overall theming. It's not, but I can't shake this feeling.
This game needs to be played by more people. Its sad its not getting any attention. Also. DLC out tomorrow for Nier. 560 MS Points or 7 dollars human moneys.
Following hot on the heels of the game's April 27 release, DLC for Square Enix's action/RPG Nier will be available tomorrow. Entitled "World of Recycled Vessel," the content will include new challenges, costumes, and weapons.
Among the add-ons is a new look for the main character. You can now play as Young Nier, originally only available in the Japanese PS3-exclusive version of the game, Nier Replicant. You'll also get new costumes for regular Nier, Emil, and Kainé.
The DLC will also include new areas and stages (complete with new monsters to fight), which will unlock new weapons. All of this can be yours by logging on to Xbox Live or PSN and paying 560 Microsoft points or seven real dollars, respectively.
Im so very buying.

Is the DLC content for before or after finishing the game?
Trying to decide if I should get it tomorrow or wait.
Also, fishing is pissing me off. Especially since Weiss tells me over and over again to move in the opposite direction the fish is going when I don't even get half a second to see which way the fish is going before it gets away.
Wasn't sure that was actually supposed to be play as Nier Replicant in the main game; other articles made it sound like it was a new area/mini-quest where you automatically played as him, not that he was a new skin. Still, I'm interested. Definitely interested.
And yes, the game is smart. Not as smart as it could be, but it's funny, self-aware, genuinely emotional (huge spoiler) -
how anyone could sit through Emil's death and not get chills I can't understand.
It isn't as clever as it purports to be - there are far too many things glossed over for that, and the big twist was pretty obvious some way off - but it's way above most triple-A titles from the past few years.
And the ICO/SotC feel probably comes from the colour palette and the size of many of the bosses, as well as (big spoilers for New Game+)
the fact you're basically a shit, a murderer and arguably forfeiting your right to your prize with every further kill you make.

Weiss can be misleading. An easier rule of thumb is just to tilt the stick by watching Nier and moving the same direction he's bending, just a small movement until the bar starts flashing again.
Also based on what you just said about fish getting away are you sure you're at the right spot? Check your map. If fish are getting away that fast they're fish you don't have the skill to catch yet.

Super big NG+ spoilers ahoy.
Double spoiler, since I go into specifics.
The robot and child shade in the Junk Heap hit me the hardest, really. I have to give special mention, though, for that bit in the Shadowlord's castle where the sphere shades show up in the ballroom... and you have other shades pleading with you not to kill their children because they're just babies and don't know any better than to panic and attack you blindly. Meanwhile Nier is just grimly spearing them all as they spawn in, entirely oblivious. That was supremely, pretty much Drakengard-level fucked up.
Also, I had an inkling of part of the big reveal about the shades even on the first playthrough. Big shades drop what, dictionaries and technical manuals; what do small shades drop? School books. Colouring books.
Also I'm very glad I read that bit about the DLC dropping tomorrow because I was going to go for Ending D tonight, I'll put that off for a bit.
I'm at the dock where I get the fishing pole and the lure to fish up a shaman fish.
Been going at this an hour and I've caught 2 plants and 3 buckets.
Wrong spot. Seafront is the only map in the game to have several discrete fishing spots. Head to the big beach near the lighthouse instead.
Well, damn, I did that and sure enough, first cast nets me a shaman fish easy as pie. Did the game tell me to go there and I just didn't pay attention?

It sticks a red X on your map at the big beach, without telling you; that said, they give you the pole right there and with no experience in fishing yet it's pretty easy to just assume you're supposed to be at the small beach and just getting unlucky. It happened to me, and probably most other people too.
Holy shit man. The 2nd run of this game is so emotionally hard and just...Ive never had a game twist me so much on what I thought. I literally had tears in my eyes when
After the King stabs the lead wolf he says "What did we do to deserve this?"
It was just sad.

Alright well I finished the 2nd playthrough. All around sad and fucked up and revealing. I also love the after-credits thing. That was awesome and made me so happy.
Cant wait to see Ending 3 now. Going through playthrough 2 is certainly saddening and extremely informational. This story was well made.

Same here, I've been getting those vibes too. Along with, strangely enough, a Berserk(ish) vibe as well.
It's not as smart as Berserk (which is occasionally astonishingly clever under all the WAAARGH GUTS SMASH THINGS going on) but there is that feeling of a hopeless quest against all the odds. Plus NieR is very much a quiet post-apocalypse, which is also something Berserk managed to do surprisingly well despite its subject matter (the story arcs concerning the more pastoral Brothers Grimm/Arthur Rackham-esque fantasy, the woods, the elves etc., feature some of my favourite artwork ever).
Anyway. Three endings down, going to try for the fourth in a bit. Should there be a warning in the OP somewhere that ending D will delete your saves (by design, it's meant to do this)? ;-)

Welp, got ending E in Drakengard. Cheated like a motherfucker too, because I was not going to do that without pausing. When it's still a 70% chance you'll fail even with cheating it might just be a segment that's too hard Cavia. Just possibly. Now I'm all ready to start Nier. Hells yes. Looking forward to this.
Also someone will have to tell me if the DLC is strictly NG+ type stuff, or if I can just use the costumes and such whenever. If I can I might buy it for my first playthrough to spice things up. Then the missions will just be waiting for when I finish.
From the tutorial alone I have had more fun than I had at any point in Drakengard, and the music is so good. It's like God has smiled upon me and said, "My child, behold what Cavia can make when Enix doesn't get bought out halfway through development. You have passed my trial of Drakengard, now partake of this gift." Also I can see how it ties into Ending E, but I bet that the intro is all the connection it's going to make isn't it? It's still neat though.

I youtubed it right after getting ending C, they make you go through, no joke, 5 yes/no prompts before the process starts. It could be in the OP but you'll never do it by accident.
I don't know if you've done D yet yourself, but do you know how smart are they about hunting down your save files when you pull the trigger on that ending? Can I, like, remove my HD and just load a save from memory, or are they going to actively look for saves to eat up whenever I put the HD back?
On the one hand it's a really neat touch to hammer home just what ending D actually does; on the other hand, fuck that I'm not tossing 50 hours of effort and a bunch of saves at awesome spots, especially with DLC coming out.

Heh, I haven't actually tried D yet, though I can pretty much guess how it goes. As for how safe your saves are, I don't know! I'm amused by the thought of the game deleting any you should have lost if you put them back. ('I seee yooou...') Still, I was going to stick them on a pen drive or something, so they'd be safe even if - you'd just have to wipe the game data entirely, reinstall then copy the saves back, I guess.
I don't think I can be bothered doing a fourth New Game+. I can't face doing any more grinding for weapons drops, the combat is just a formality now. I'm killing most of the big enemies in one shot. Not to mention rares take ages to turn up. I might try hard to see how it is, and I can grab the second combo trophy with a quick new game on easy, but other than that I guess I'm close to burnt out. Lot of fun, though. In many ways it's such a terrible game! But I can't help but genuinely adore it.

<AtlusParker> Sorry I'm playing Pokemon and vomiting at the same time so I'm not following the conversation in a linear fashion.
The fourth ending is just a choice on the third playthrough right? Can't you save before you make it? It's not like you'll need your file to know it has all the endings since D is just going to delete it anyway.
I think the idea was people might not want it to delete all their saves in case they do want to go back and hoover up any remaining achievements/trophies. And there's the general strange attachment many of us develop to save files regardless, as a badge of, well, merit of a sort; like Meiteron said, 40-50 hours essentially vanished, to say nothing of if you've kept saves before good bits (since there's no way of replaying stuff otherwise - there's not even an option to view cutscenes).

Game has this for £15, absolutely no excuse not to get it now. This game is so worth that price tag.
I saw this thread with all the praise, then at this price I can't say no.
I have no real idea of what I am in for mind.
Yeah good stuff, jump right in! Like Rooks is saying, it's terrible but oh so terrific at the same time. I think having no expectations of what you want the game to be is the best thing. Just go along for the ride, listen to the pretty music and say "Sure, why the hell not" when it throws another genre at you.
Wow, my luck is just crazy bad. It took me an hour to collect 3 Royal Ferns. I didn't get any for 50 minutes and then in the last 10 I got all 3.
Yeah and then after the quest is over you'll walk outside and find 2 in a row.
Also I hope they make more DLC for this. I really liked this one. The money at the end of the 3rd area is excellent too as well as the nice chance to get any rare forging item you may need in there from all those crates. When I get home from work today it shall be all about Junk Heap/3rd Area DLC runs for Forge Items. I WILL upgrade everything.

Ok so it arrived today. I just played for about an hour.
First thing I noticed, anyone bitching about the graphics is just a silly goose. They're fine/rather nice in places, i mean seriously. I watched the gametrailers review and they reckon they are 'last generation graphics'. I think some people have forgotten what the last generation looked like.
Secondly, the father is fucking ugly. Jesus.
The music...god the music. How good is that! Loving it.
Overall, I am having a great time. Good call PA people, I'm glad I read this thread and listened to you guys.
I think it's mainly in his wild, desperate expression, which makes sense considering his situation. It's a refreshing change to have someone who looks like he was set on fire then put out with a shovel as a protagonist, though.
Any time I go from playing something like Bad Company 2 on the PC in 1900x1200 resolution to a 360 game running 720p or 1080p (not sure which one Nier runs) it always looks like "last generation graphics".
That is a weak argument that game reviewers give way too much weight to.
The game is gorgeous. Running in and out of tunnels in the bright sunlight of the port town is fantastic.
So, maybe it isn't 16x anti-aliased and you get some jagged edges. It's still damn fun.
And yeah, your character is an ugly sumbitch. It's even funnier when you give him a name like "Mikey".
Yeah, the graphics... just no. No. They are terrible. The aesthetics make no sense, the texture work is horrible, the filters are ghastly (check out the comically bad effect when anyone gets right up close to the camera; they look like they've turned into a sprite), the animation is awful (the jumping! The jumping!)... you're clearly a nicer person than me, Helloween, but... no, they're just horrid.
They're never so bad as to be a gamebreaker, some of the character design is interesting, the perspective switches are entertaining, if pointless, and the use of scale is frequently quite impressive. But artistically this game is as much of a mess as it is mechanically.
Anyway, bought the DLC, but only after I'd got all four endings. I had to play through an hour or so just to get back to the point I could actually use it. >_< Probably should have restored my saves! The new title screen is a nice touch, though.

Obviously you don't understand that more bloom = more better graphics, and by this logic the seaside town means this game has the greatest graphics ever. I could not see anything at all except for the father when exiting the cave to the lighthouse. I was floored by how incredibly realistic it was. That's what bloom is supposed to be, right? Realistic?
Seriously though, the graphics are eh to me. Some stuff is okay, some stuff is really bad (Check out the water underneath the bridge on the northern plains). The filters get really annoying though. I don't like the saturation filter that I guess is supposed to indicate it's later in the day.
