    Yeah, it runs OSX.

The only thing that turns me away from it is the $500 to $600 price (4gb and 8gb, respectively). And that is with a two year contract with Cingular.

I think, just maybe, there was a 75 page thread on this.

I'd pay the $599, it's the stupid Cingular contract. (I'm already on Cingular and have 1.5 years to go. :( )

They will sell the phone without a cingular contract as well. They just don't want to say how much it will cost on its own at this point in the hype period since it will be obscene.

I'm guessing 599 for the 4GB and 699 for the 8GB. That's the best we can hope for under these circumstances...

Not to mention that thing is fucking huge. Walk around looking like you're talking into your TI-84 graphing calculator. However my contract with cingular ends in june coincidentally. However it is very unlikely I'll get one of these.

Well, judging by the reported size of the screen, and holding the nearest device on hand with the same sized screen up to my monitor....

Eh. It's no phone-so-small-you-can-swallow-it, sure, but it's no bigger than a slightly bulky phone or a smartphone. Well within acceptable range.

In little meaningful sense of the word. It runs an OS X-branded operating system, unrelated to MacOS X.

So $600 and a 2 year Cingular contract means it costs me $1200: that's $600 extra in phone bills from the minimum Cingular plan for 2 years. And then it will keep on costing more monthly because of that. I could afford it, but man I don't think I could stomach withholding like $800+ from charity just so I can have my cell phone and MP3 player in the same device.

The device itself, though, looks pretty sweet.

where are you getting the 1200 figure? 600 buys you the device that you keep forever. you own that. of course then after the fact there is the monthly contract that you are obligated to pay for 2 years.

i am personally hoping they offer one year contracts even if it is a bit more money. i would hate to get stuck with something i didnt like for two years.

You just made me feel much better about my plan to purchase one later in the year. I own a pair of $200 sunglasses that I use everyday and they are pristine. Of course that could be because up until August of this year I wore glasses and got in the habit of taking care of them.

On a related note after only owning my Razr for a year I dropped in a friends Captain and Coke and just ordered a L6 Slvr off ebay to replace it. Which makes me want to rethink purchasing of said Iphone.

Good thing I have some time to figure this shit out.

An extremely stripped-down version of it. It's like saying your PDA runs Windows XP, really.

The price notwithstanding, I don't understand people going all gaga for this. Ooh, a convergence product. Never seen one of those before. Never cared for them either, generally speaking.

Plus I can't imagine the battery life is very good (especially taking into account that people are going to be using it for power-hungry things other than making phone calls), and the whole thing where the battery can't be removed is always an infuriating design decision, even moreso on a cellphone.

I think a LOT of excitement from the mainstream on this is coming from the fact that they heard rumors of it already.

"mainstream" tech people never get the rush of being aware of a product first. This announcement is making a lot of people excited that they either though of, heard someone who thought of, or heard a rumor of this item.

That might sound weird but I think it's having a massive effect.

plus if it's as "hot" as the ipod is, a lot of 30 year old dads are going to be buying it. the day it was announced a guy who fits such a decription came into Radioshack I work at asking to preorder one.

I think the iPhone will enjoy lukewarm success with trendy businesspeople and rich gadget fans, but it won't be a runaway blockbuster like the Razr or iPod. The device itself is just too expensive for consumers, and anyone looking to utilize all of its features will end up paying at least $80 a month on their cell phone bill. Some might argue that Apple will drop the price after a year or so, but by then the competition will have released superior devices for everyone to salivate over. And it's not like Apple will keep on flogging it for years to come until it's so cheap they come in cereal boxes à la Razr. No, they will discontinue it after a few years at a final pricepoint of like $350 (with contract) and replace it with an even fancier $600 smartphone.

Also I think its success with diehard nerds will be pretty limited because it sounds like the software's going to be totally locked down.

I'm half tempted to get rid of my piece of shit RAZR for this, but I realize the price tag and the fact I've already got an iPod and such. It seems really bulky for a phone, and being that I'm clumsy with my good stuff I'd probably crack that fucking screen. If it were a flip top, somehow, I'd hit it twice.
