Out of curiously I recently downloaded and executed what was purported to be a firefox plugin. I have since come to regret it. The thing is, there doesn't seem to be an option for uninstalling it and a quick search of my windows partition shows that it installed files everywhere. I want to make sure every trace of this program is gone.
I still have the executable. Is there any way of figuring out where it puts files?
I tried using this command to generate a log:
MSIEXEC.exe /I <path of the setup file> /L*v <path of the install log file>
However, it only seems to work on msi files and I'm using it on an exe file. I also tried extracting the file using universal extractor, but it only yielded a bunch of files without extensions.
It turns out there was an option to see the details of the installation. From there, I managed to find the location of the files that needed deleting. I just wished I got to this point two hours ago.
Since the log window moved too fast to read, I searched for images of package management systems, thinking that there might be documentation on the location of the log file. I found the installer I was looking for, downloaded the program that generated the setup file, installed it, and saw it crash on my 64 bit system. When I ran the program on a different computer downstairs, I discovered it doesn't open finished installers.
This misadventure did lead me to discover that 7zip can unpack the installer. So I installed 7zip. Inside the installer, there was absolutely nothing useful.
Finally, I just took pictures of the log window while running the installer over and over again, piecing them together into a coherent narrative.
