I'm having issues using ethernet to connect my lap top to the internet while at work. I use the same connection and the same cord as I do in my dorm room. I have no trouble connecting to my boyfriend's router with the same cord. There is another computer here that uses the same ethernet ports, but has a connection. I used to have a connection here, but now I don't.
This started on Monday morning. I'm not being told that I have limited or no connectivity. In fact, it says that there is a connection there. In my connection status window under activity I see a lot of sent packets, but hardly any received packets.
My firewall is ZoneAlarm; I am not using the Windows firewall.
I desperately need my computer at work for entertainment and sanity. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Going from memory here so may not be 100% accurate.
Go through Control Panel and get to your network settings.
Right click on your ethernet adapter.
Go to properties.
See if you're specifying an IP address or if it's set on automatically obtain IP address.
If it's not on automatically obtain then switch to that and click apply.
I'm not seeing a checkbox or pulldown menu to change those setting, but I can tell you that under my connection details my IP address type says "Assigned by DHCP".
It occurs to me that I should have mentioned that I'm on a university server. I'm authenticated on it; I had to do it in my dorm room on the first of the school year, and I'm pretty sure I authenticated here at the desk when I took this job. This has been working fine, but just stopped on Monday.

Could they be blocking my IP?
Go to start -> run
Type CMD, click ok
type ipconfig /release
type ipconfig /renew
type exit
Try your connection.
