There are two versions of live.

Silver: Free. Basic access to friends list and voice chat as well as downloadable content and system updates. No Multiplayer support for most games (Phantasy Star Universe and FFXI being the exception since they charge their own online fees)

Gold: Pay version. Gain multiplayer support for any Xbox live game with multiplayer with the exception of the two mentioned above and any other game requiring pay subscription. You also gain priority when it comes to new content releases over live (as in getting access to demos/movies/whatever over live sooner than Silver)

I don't know if there's any other differences beyond that.

You get a month of Gold free, just select Silver at the end, and say no thank you are whatever when it asks you if you want to upgrade to Gold, it will then say you're eligible for a free month of Gold (very sneaky, MS).

Everybody can sign up for a free silver account. This account lets you have a friends list, send messages, chat and have access to downloadable content on the Live Marketplace (demos, Live Arcade Games and I believe content for games.)

A gold account is essentially the same except that it allows you to play your games online.

Live Silver is free, and with it, you get achievements tracking, a friends list, and the ability to message them, and, I believe, allows you to download demos and anything else off of Marketplace. It's not really that much.

Gold is not free. It's $50 per year if you pay yearly and it allows you to play games online through Live.

How do I get the one month free?

It will automatically sign you up for it when you create your live account.

Just start your Silver account. It will say you have one free month and after you finish setting up your account, it will automatically be upgraded.

Start making a silver account all the way to the end. At the very end they'll just give you a month of Gold for free.

    Double beat.

    Ah, thanks guys!!! :)

I have a new problem though...

On the HDTV settings, it will only do widescreen above 480p...

How do I get it to fullscreen?

It says I "need an HD AV Cable to configure high definition display modes."

But I have component cables... I need something else to get it to fullscreen at 720p?

There's a little switch on the cable itself. Make sure it's set to HD.

I did, and it is displaying everything correctly, but anything above 480p is in widescreen only and won't let me choose fullscreen...

Sorry, to knid of hijack the thread, but I don't see anywhere else to ask this.

I got a wireless controller for my xbox 360 and it won't work. I turn it on and all 4 bars keep flashing instead of eventually stopping on one. I assume this means that it can't connect. I've tried everything really obvious (batteries etc..) do I need to return it or am I looking over something.

When I signed up for XBL, it never asked me how I want to renew my account and I didn't have to put in my credit card That said, my account management options where it talks about membership and renewal options are set to N/A or Not Set. That being said, I don't think Microsoft can charge you on your credit card unless you agree to it. So if anything pops up, don't be hasty, ready it.

Last time I checked, you can get a year of live for $40 from Amazon with free shipping. Or if you want the vision camera/1 year of gold bundle, you can save $15 and get free shipping.

As well as the little button on top of the controller. . . hitting both (one right after the other) of these is required to sync up a controller to your system . . .

That's normal. 720 and 1080 are widescreen formats.

I know this might sound really odd and all, but did you read the instructions?

It explains how to set up a wireless controller in nice, easy language.

I got an e-mail this week saying that my live subscritption was renewed. It was pretty automatic.

Yes, I tried hitting all the little buttons. I was able to set up 1 controller but not the other one.

The Xbox 360 cannot output more than 480p in 4:3.

it's not rocket science, you push sync button on the front of the 360, then the one on the top of the controller

if it's really that difficult there is a help line

I did that. I followed all the instructions, it refuses to sync up. I guess I'll just have to return it.
