AT&T DSL and wireless routers -resolved-

If anyone has successfully gotten their AT&T DSL to work with a wireless router I would be extremely enthused to hear what worked for you. I'm left grasping at straws since the actual AT&T tech support people are as confused and stumped as I am. I've searched around on the web, and unsurprisingly, many other people have had problems with AT&T DSL and their routers (both wireless routers like mine, as well as the 4 port wired kind) but solutions are in short supply. Tomorrow I will be running out to purchase a new router, since people who replaced old routers with newer models have had it start working for them in some instances, and my router is indeed years old.

Which modem with AT&T are you using? If its the Netopia or the 2WIRE its probably already a 4 port router. If its the speedstream, westel, or motorolla I believe those are just single user modems and would work just fine through a router.

Your modem and router are sharing the same default IP. I do not know of a way to change it on the modem. My solution (I had this exact same problem with my att motorola modem) was to log into my router and change the router's IP. I changed the third hex to a 2. Hooked everything up and it has worked beautifully ever since. Also when I called ATT they didn't have a fucking clue either. Useless.

I think this could be the problem, I'm using a Netgear wgr614 and will give this a shot.

After messing around with ip settings all morning I took a trip to Best Buy. I was assured that if my new router failed to connect like my old one, I could return it. But it worked, magically, right out of the box. So my stepdad was right, it's all just bullshit to make people update their equipment every few years instead of recycling it.

But I thank you both, gentlemen for the replies.
