Been dicking around with 6 pool a lot as zerg. It's not really worth the risk, is it?

I mean, sure, plenty of times it'll end a game in 3 minutes. But the other half I think it puts me too far behind on workers/gas/tech in the long term, and the game ends up going on even longer than if I had just built everything at an even pace.

That's what drives me nuts about the majority of the players I fight. Most of them don't seem very interested in ending the game. They'd rather just macro up and attack me whenever they goddamn feel like it. I don't have time for that bullshit. If you're going to beat me, beat me.

I try to expand, get the economic advantage. But usually I don't really make the most out of it. Like the other day, the toss went straight to proton cannons, made my tons of zerglings useless. I expanded, tried to tech up to air, hydras, and maybe nydus. He doesn't build any units while he techs, and he has void rays out before I can get any of my AA out and it's over. What should I have done there? Would a ton of roaches been enough to break through his ramp of cannons? I know at the very least that leaving my enemy alone for a while because I've given up on breaking his defenses with the army I have never turns out to be a good idea.

can you guys have a look at this replay?

Protoss V Terran, Metalopolis. I scout early that he's going for reapers, but too late to change my build (gateway at 13). Besides an earlier gateway, could I have responded any better to his initial reaper attack?

I recovered and pushed forward with my economy, then he nearly got me again with a small force of marauders, but i JUst managed to finish a sentry, forcefield my ramp and delay him long enough to get an immortal out.

Game went on a little longer, then I spotted a factory coming over with two dropships with my newest observer, got a bunch of stalkers and sentries there, nearly killed the factory, then he just left.

Can anyone tell me why you think he might have left? Or did he maybe disconnect?

Oftentimes when a Protoss player goes Photon Cannons fast and uses them for heavy defense (or even a complete wall-off), he's going Void Rays. In fact, although you should always be scouting, if you don't know what he's doing early in the game, expect Void Rays, they almost always do. If he goes VRs and you were prepared, that puts the Protoss in a bad position.

Also, even if you can't break through with your army, use it to scout and make sure he's contained and not secretly expanding elsewhere.

Alucard, is your name just Alucard? And did you recently lose to a Protoss who kept rebuilding his Gateway wall? Or did you beat such a protoss?

Edit: I ask because I (Brigand.asmodeus) played a game against a Zerg player named Alucard recently.

Thing is, I did see the starport. I did try to tech to hydras/mutas, but it was too little too late. Even with two expansions, I never got enough workers on either one in the rush to catch up from my failed 6pool.

But you would still say that it's better to take advantage of the fact that he's walled in rather than to do everything in my power to break the wall as soon as possible?

Just go straight to Hydras. He's turtling so he can't afford to rush you, don't waste money on zerglings/roaches. You can't stop him from getting Void Rays, but the single base and cannons puts him at a heavy economic disadvantage so he'll lose any fight as long as you're prepared.

9-barracks 1-marine then tech lab-marauder is fast enough to stop an all in 6-barracks reaper on blistering sands

even though he destroyed my tech lab, that marauder just kept on building.

I think he would've had me if I did anything slower

Not to sure why they guy would have went for the tech lab then. He could have easily killed a good number of scvs by the time that marauder was finished.

Is a 6 barracks really an all in tactic? I figured it was just a good way to stall the other player for awhile.

If you're looking to be aggressive early game but not too behind in economy then opt for like a 10pool. Kill off his scout then sit around the front of his base and dip in every once in awhile to check things out and to spook him.

If you do this and deny scouting he'll have to respond by going on the defensive, regardless of whether you've been droning up or massing lings back at home simply because there's a threat of a zergling bust. 10pool should also be fast enough to win a few games if your opponent doesn't respond correctly or you can punish him for skimping of early defense.

    he built no scvs

I'm sure he could've done something more reasonable. If I did pretty much any other build other than faster-marauders, he would've had me though.

edit: he also scouted with an scv!

thanks, I'll give it a shot.

I know I was just using 6 pool basically as a crutch. Hell, it did win me like a dozen games. But it's also lost even more, since I'd assume anyone above a certain skill level can defend against it.
