To smart phone, or to not...?

A nice a simple question. Are smart phones worth it if you don't know how much you'll use all the "extra features"?

My friends are all getting the EVO when it comes out, but I wouldn't be able to because I just got a dumb phone under my father's plan in November. I could get a seperate plan under my mom and simply have to pay $40 a month (for another line + data, not including the $8 with tax). But like I said, I don't know if $40 a month is worth getting the phone.

Things I would use often:

-Internet
-Game apps
-Messaging

Things I might use:

-Camera/Video

And if this is anything to consider, the phone is the Pre Plus on AT&T. Love the sleek web os.

If you don't think you'll use the features, it's really not worth it.

You're looking at around $500 a year for watered down internet access and the ability to play a few games (which most likely will cost you money as well).

Personally? I would in a heartbeat.

I pay on average $94us/month for my data/texting/talk plan for my iphone, and I absolutely love having access to a real web browser everywhere, all the good stuff.

If you're going at&t anyways, I would STRONGLY recommend holding out for another month or 3 when the new iphone drops, it's going to be awesome and I'd recommend getting that first and foremost, but even if you don't, it's sure to push prices on other smartphones down even further.

The new iPhone looks pretty awesome, so if you're going to get a smart phone I would definitely recommend waiting until the new one comes out as it will be the best phone out there and last you the longest.

Something you should keep in mind is that the total cost of having a smartphone is going to be ~1000 / year. You gotta ask yourself, given how much you use the phone, is that worth it?

I would heartily recommend the Evo, especially if you're in a 4G area.

It bests the iPhone in almost every respect, like having faster internet, swappable batteries (meaning you can buy a larger capacity one and get more juice), and an insanely customizable OS, just to name a few.

Smartphone pissing contests never end well. But even as a google fanboy i'd have to say you'd be risking some buyers remorse if you didn't at least wait until the next iPhone hits.

Or you could go the other way..

Ever since the Nexus one and HTC Incredible/Desire hit, Ebay seems to be flooded with cheap 2nd hand Heros and Magics. You could get one of these, and get a plan of your choice (assuming the phone is unlocked).

Or you could just get the next Iphone..

If you go with a google phone, keep in mind most of the games suck. The one's worth keeping on your phone can be counted in one hand.

Like most have said, at least wait until June for Apple to announce their new phone.

As someone who just got their first smartphone, I'm finding it really useful. But that's mostly because I make use of the ability to sync up my calendars and email accounts, and I tend to send a lot of work-related emails. Being able to check up on that stuff and deal with semi-urgent issues wherever I am is excellent.

Honestly though, I'm not really making huge usage of the a lot of the features. I justified it to myself because I needed a new phone and the difference between this and a run of the mill 'dumb' phone was only a few hundred dollars. If I was in your position and didn't expect to get any particular usage out of a smartphone, I wouldn't bother.

I got the iPhone 3G when it first came out in Australia. I loved it. Was an awesome phone. Flash foward a year and it got stolen and being a poor uni student I didn't have phone insurance. Later that month I got a Blackberry Bold 9000 on the cheap from a craigslist like site. Its a good phone but just not as good as the iPhone imo. It saved me $500 since I was still on a plan that I had to pay for and I was able to pick it up for $300 but I can't wait until the plan is finally up in August so I can get another/the new iPhone.

Smartphones are pretty awesome devices. The iPhone is far and away the best for games and such.

I get my gmail and work email on my Jack, have Google Maps which turns it into a pretty effective GPS device (as long as its hooked to the car charger, because that shit burns through batteries), Facebook app, etc. Although my phone is more for work and all that than playing games.

I can never go back to a "normal" phone after gettin my Jack.

I forgot to ask, what are your friends upgrading from? Maybe you could take one of their smartphones if they're available?

The friends upgrading to the EVO don't have smartphones. tThe only reason they're getting one is because their parents are paying for it.

As of right now it looks like I should wait until the iphone 4g comes out and maybe try the 30 day return policy? That and make my friends let me test out their phones.

I hate to say it but my life here at college would be significantly less convenient without my nexus one. I use it to keep track of literally everything, as well as keep papers, powerpoints, etc. on me just in case.
