26-24. Anderson takes it. Second longest match in Wimbledon history, fourth longest overall.

Absolutely astonishing match. And both guys took the time to sign stuff after the match despite being so exhausted.

And Djokovic and Nadal are coming out shortly. Blimey.

Isner. Man. Do you just like punishing yourself or what?

You’re starting to get a reputation.

Djokovic v Nadal is every bit as awesome as you'd hope. And will conclude tomorrow.

  • JazzJazz Registered User regular
    They're on again.

    ...and have only just finished.
    Well done, Novak. Rafa

    Ladies' final:
Kerber in straight sets! Another great match.

    Men's final:
This is looking rather one-sided so far. But Anderson is starting to improve, belatedly. I just don't want it to be an annihilation.

  • JazzJazz Registered User regular
Anderson made Djokovic work for that third set. A shame he couldn't hold it and give us more of the match at that level. But well done Novak. He's back.

Another French Open just finished up. Guess who won? One guess for men’s, thirty guesses for women’s.

I am on this Cori Gauff bandwagon.

  • JazzJazz Registered User regular
    She's the real deal.

I did feel bad for Hercog though.

Konta is driving my nerves crazy. C'mon, Jo.

(Although this is one of those "whoever wins, it's cool" matches.)

Edit: And there we go. :+1:

Wimbledon is my favorite tournament. Just seems to breed more exciting matches throughout.

Too bad for Gauff, had to come to an end sometime I suppose. She’s present going forward thou I think. She’s even got great presence in this live interview she’s doing on ESPN right now.

  • JazzJazz Registered User regular
Hurricane Strycova obliterates Konta. Blimey. If she plays like that against Serena, anything is possible.

Djokovic vs Bautista Agut is a great match so far.

And then afterwards we get Federer vs Nadal for, amazingly, the first time at Wimbles since the famous 2008 final?

If you like this type of sportsball, this is a hell of a day.

For the 17th consecutive year, one of Federer-Nadal-Djokovic-Murray is going to win Wimbledon, which just seems like a crazy run of mostly 3 guys to me.

  • joshofalltradesjoshofalltrades Class Traitor Smoke-filled roomRegistered User regular
Those guys are very good at the game

Go Federer, don't let Djokovic pad his stats more to be up there with you and Nadal.

And go Halep, make Serena have a sad.

  • JazzJazz Registered User regular
    Holy shit. Stunning.

  • NightslyrNightslyr Registered User regular
Eh, not really, IMO. Serena isn't the stone cold killer she used to be. The pressure of 24 is pretty clearly in her head, and when she's not feeling it her serve and movement are what suffer. Just like today: broken 4 times while not being able to convert the 1 chance she had on Halep's serve, while also reaching/leaning for balls rather than striding into her groundstrokes (all those weak balls into the net on routine plays). On most of the points she looked like she was stuck in mud, and was unable/unwilling to take the extra step or two needed to be in position to actually flex her power.

Halep played some amazing defense in spots, but the majority of the match was about Serena choking under pressure. Again. Loose and confident Serena doesn't get blown off the court in an hour.

How have I not heard any mentions of the men’s final? I just caught up, and woa! What a match!

  • JazzJazz Registered User regular
I was so goddamn drained after that match. And my guy lost (after having two championship points at what felt like hours earlier). At that point I just wanted to get to the F1 that I'd had to record instead!

  • davidsdurionsdavidsdurions Your Trusty Meatshield Panhandle NebraskaRegistered User regular
Haha I watched F1 live, then had to do all the daytime stuff here in the States. I also have Tour de France recorded from earlier. But I mostly just fast forward to the end unless I see a wreck there. Good thing I can listen to baseball on the radio during the day.

It’s been busy today, sporting wise!

I do wonder if the rules change made a difference in this match.
Djoker seemed to only be able to win a set if there was a tie breaker at the end. Federer had a distinct advantage on serve and with break points. Such a good match overall.

  • TexiKenTexiKen Dammit! That fish really got me!Registered User regular
It was a great match, but nowhere near Nadal/Federer '08 in Wimbledon finals or Roddick/Federer '07 (or even Nadal/Federer AO '09).

Irony is that Federer would have lost to Roddick had they implemented this tiebreak rule back then, and would have won today had they kept playing.

But I will give Djokovic credit, I still believe he's got a padded slam count compared to Nadal and Federer because he's never had a real rival and the two were injured a bit in recent years and just not at their prime, but this was a final Djokovic can hang his hat on for at least being considered in the top 10 all time.

I just really enjoy watching Nadal/Federer more than Djokovic/anybody else

Even now that they’re past their prime

Tournaments will have to give you a 33% discount on a ticket to a Raducanu match as you never get a full 3 sets.

The slightly less shit person winning is the best I was hoping for there.

But man did he try and throw that at the end.

I'm glad Medvedev won because it pauses any discussion that Djokovic would be seen as the goat. He's not, he never will be, it's Federer or Nadal.

That developing story was a real roller-coaster. Glad about the apparent happy ending.

Oh man, there are also some choice antivaxx conspiracy quotes from his father and even Serbia's president.

The saga continues. Now he's claiming he doesn't need a waiver because he actually already had covid some time earlier.

Raising the question why he didn't tell anyone about that before and why he didn't quarantine back when he was supposedly sick and contagious.

  • joshofalltradesjoshofalltrades Class Traitor Smoke-filled roomRegistered User regular
IIRC he got COVID during the ill-advised tennis tour he put together when the rest of the matches were on hiatus, and he had to apologize for

Then he turned around and went full anti-vaxx

    God Djokovic sucks on toast
