Doctor Who: City of the Daleks - Free adventure game courtesy of the BBC
And now there is a game of it, made available for free by the lovely BBC. Clicky here to get it. This is just the first of several episodes.
Synopsis:
The TARDIS materializes in 1963 to find the human race crushed by the Daleks. The Doctor embarks on a quest to the Dalek planet to correct time and save the last survivor of Humanity - Amy Pond!
It's produced by Steven Moffat (writer of the current series of Doctor Who), written by Charles Cecil (Broken Sword, Beneath a Steel Sky) and developed by Sumo Digital. It also has the actors from the TV program saying the words!
I just iPlayered the latest ep and was reminded that these were coming. I was about to check the website to see if they're here yet and up pops this topic! Fate.
I'm keeping my expectations set at 'hilariously bad' so I can be pleased with quality at either end of the spectrum.
Honestly, I wish the Beeb would just let me buy a license and give me access to all of their streaming + stuff like this. I would gladly pay. Instead I steal until it's on DVD, where I buy. I will absolutely pay for this in July.

Just google "UK Proxy" and type the site into that.
I just finished it. It's... not the worst adventure game I've ever played and the production values are much higher than other free games based on TV shows. You could easily pass it up and not worry about missing out on anything, though. Hopefully the future episodes will improve.
They roll differently over there. My understanding is that they have an actual TV Tax, which is used to finance their state run television channels (the BBC).
Since they've already paid the tax, they can download BBC related software and stream BBC shows for free, whereas people from other countries have to pay to get access.
Which is why a lot of people (myself included) wish we could just give the UK some money and get the same deal.
So, by the standards of free games designed for children, it's not bad. Just don't try to judge it as a commercial piece, or one aimed at gamers.
Play if you're a fan, as the plot does at least have some old series continuity nods.
Matt Smith is pretty good at voiceovers, which lifts it considerably.

I mean clearly I hope it'll be great and there seem to be some good names behind it, but some images I've seen have been amusing in the wrong way and it's not there haven't been some pretty awful Dr. Who spin off products.

[strike]They're 330MB. I bet you there are already many, many torrents out there.[/strike]
If you're a filthy foreigner it seems you'll get to buy it soon.
I wonder how this will tie into the most recent Dalek storyline, though.

Never used Bittorrent before. Wouldn't even know where to start.
In any case, looks like the Mac version won't hit until June 15.

Well, it's not very good, at least on first impressions.
To be fair, I guess it's very squarely aimed at kids and non-gamers.
If you live outside the UK, you have to buy it?

Yeah. That is fishy.

Ho hum. Still entertaining enough to a Who fan for free. Really, really not worth paying for.
