If I owned a timeshare and decided I no longer wanted it, would I have to find a buyer for it or could I just call the hotel and cancel (as in void ownership, without refund or anything) and not be responsible for the maintenance fees anymore?
I'm just trying to figure out why second hand time shares go so cheap.

I bet calling the hotel would give you your answer.
After some deeper googling I found out you can't just give it up and you're actually locked in to pay maintenance fees and whatnot unless you can actually find someone to buy it (read: take it off you for free) which can take years. Convinced me not to go for it at all.

Go ahead, call the hotel.
