I think it's a clever idea to bring the battle back to a one hit kill mechanic. Better invest in triple jumps and speedier jumpboosters and climbing!

I love Contra IV, but never beat it on hard despite hours and hours of trying. I could beat Contra III on all 3 diffculties in a row without losing a life. Doesn't sound like I would get much enjoyment out of this. I'll try the demo.
Hell, I could never beat Contra IV on normal, much less hard. It took a long time to even beat it on easy for me. I'm just not very good at Contra games, but I still love them.
I could only ever beat Contra 3 on hard with a friend. But playing through from Easy to Hard actually made the latter much easier since you'd have tons of lives stacked up by the time you got there. I'd do fine up until the level 5 boss--all that spinning just made me nauseous, and I remember it like tripled the speed on hard.
During the loading screen for mission one, entering the classic Konami Code will change the mission's background music to a remix of Contra's first stage! As usual, the code is Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A. This code MUST be entered before the loading of the level finishes (IE, before the Press A prompt). A voice clip of "Let's rock!" will confirm the code was entered successfully.
I think this game is seeing some critical and commercial success if the 4000+ rating is any indication.

So we get stiff once in a while. So we have a little fun. What’s wrong with that? This is a free country, isn’t it? I can take my panda any place I want to. And if I wanna buy it a drink, that’s my business.
So this game is two parts awesome, one part brutal.
Have you gotten to the final (final) boss yet?
I spent millions of points adding sections to my health bar and it no longer matters because everything single hit results to falling to death.
Nope, only about level 5 or something, loving it so far, but man is it hard!
I made the mistake of buying the DLC characters. (Okay Saiyuri rocks because she's basically Strider, but I still feel ashamed for dropping points for it.)
And speaking of Strider, that game is getting a spiritual sequel too. Its a shame it's Square Enix because otherwise we could play as them man himself.

Now why didn't I think of that?
I wonder if that would work on Contra 4...

Okay played the demo and it fucking hurts my thumb to tap the fire button so often. My hands are getting weak! It was a lot of fun though, I might pick it up sometime.
I'm in the process of buying that game, too. It looks like I need to buy a 6th xbox controler (10th if you count Scene it, like one millionth if you count Rock Band). Could someone please explain this to my wife? Thanks.
Also, am I the only one that couldn't figure out how to do "actions" without going to the internet?
I saw one in the wild on a shelf at... some store the other day. Sorry for the vagueness, but it's out there.
Also, I played the demo for this, and good lord... THIS is a game worth owning. I'll totally pick it up once I have money, because the nostalgia factor alone blows me away.
So is the Contra Stage 1 remix the version that Vertex Guy did years ago? I thought I heard snippets of it elsewhere in the main menu...
Just completed the game - wow, best game of the year so far for me, totally loved the whle thing.
Awesome art, great music, perfect controls (apart from climbing) great guns, cool bosses, perfect difficulty, just the right length, online co-op FTW.
Went and checked out the website - there are seemingly 5 characters there, we have 4 (2 stock, 2 DLC), wonder when number 5 will hit, and what they'll be like? Another radically different character like Saiyuri would be more than welcome.

My guess would be that red guy you fight twice. He's the only animated boss so it would be easy to put him in as a playable character.

I brought the full game yesterday, and I'll gladly join the choir of "Daisuke + Contra = WIN". Since I'm not a complete lunatic I'll be going through a full run of Rising Mode before anything else. Could anybody fill me in on what some of the other Actions do? I know how Dodge and Reflect work (very handy, I might add), and I have an inkling of what Vault entails, but what about Tackle and the Ambush Shot stuff?
Other than that, terrific stuff so far. ArcSys might be showing a bit too much of a sadistic streak with some of the challenge (especially that timed action stuff in the first stage), but nothing a bit of practice combined with the inevitable replaying of stages multiple times won't fix.

Well he looks awesome so that would be coolio geordio.
You guys are in for a treat this game is so much fun.
Some of the bosses are a bit tricky but that just makes it way more awesome when you kick their arse.
Also that 'upgrade' mode means everyone can have a shot at beating the game as they get more and more badass with all the extra weapons, lives and skills.
So this game is two parts awesome, one part brutal.

Provided you time it right, yes. When there are more than one lining up on you while you're dancing around all the other grunts and plants and crap, it's a bit easier to mis-time it.
Overall, the game feels a bit more complicated than most past Contra titles. Enemies are brutal, that's a given, if not a series staple. But then they give you extra moves and unlockable abilities to deal with them, so that balances things out a bit. But then there's the matter of mastery of all those moves and abilities in the heat of battle...
Not saying it's good or bad, just more complicated than, say, Contra III or ReBirth.
...can't really comment on Contra: Hard Corps, though, as I grew up on Super NES and it has yet to appear on Virtual Console. But at least they didn't take away the life meter this time.
By the way, is there a good way to learn the differences between the characters? I see that the second character has less life, but... what else? Surely something balances that.

You can reflect a lot of things... even the large bombs the flying guys drop. You can even reflect some of the small annoying enemies.
I made it to the final stage without continuing last night. There are a ton of hidden 1-ups everywhere, though.
Also, fuck that train boss. I lost like six lives there. I can usually beat him with only losing 0 or 1, but goddamn, something went horribly horribly wrong.
While I haven't beat the last boss yet, the closest I got was dropping him to about 25%. Someone mentioned not letting him corner you, but I did just around 60% of the damage with the laser and staying completely on the right side, just jumping straight up to the next block. I think he does one attack where he targets the right side of the screen, but he has a fairly long wind-up on it. If I remember I accidentally fell or he hit me, losing my laser. Next few lives were spent trying to get a weapon/taking shots at him.. but mostly it involved me falling to my doom.

Yeah, it's weird, some of the things you can reflect, taken alongside some of those you can't.
Know what this game sort of reminds me of? Sort of like the Mega Man Zero to Contra's original Mega Man.
...I have no idea if that metaphor will work for any of you, but there you have it.

I think he has one move that tracks you. If you get caught too far down when it comes out, you're pretty much dead. It's best to stay about in the middle on one of the sides. Just switch sides when he starts attacking and take pot shots at him. It'll take awhile, but it's the safest way.
I just made my unfortunate acquaintance with said final boss. . . of course they'd throw in one huge "screw you" right at the end after a taxing stage with multiple pain-in-the-ass minibosses and those first few showdown phases with tons of stuff being thrown at you and DEAR GOD GRAAAAHHHHH!!!!
I can't bring myself to try again tonight. Too much of a strain, especially if you're in a funk. Seriously, if it wasn't for Rising Mode, I'd never be able to finish this game. Waaaaaay too much stuff to handle at times, even for a Contra game.

I do think I need to go get one of those Xbox controlers with the awesome pop-up dpad.
Did those release yet? If so, I totally need a fourth controller anyway... hmmmms.
Pretty sure they did http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Silver-Controller-Play-Charge/dp/B0041HROGG/ref=pd_bxgy_vg_img_a seems to be it.

I have not worked them out - going to have to check now.
Apparently they all involve running+B. Presently, Running+anything=death for me, so I'm not going to be vaulting over boxes or anything any time soon.
Not necessarily. Saiyuri starts off with a reflector. Tapping B anytime sends bullets towards the enemy.
