When you talk about the lines of the fabric, do you mean varying the size of each fold more?
Okay, time for a spontaneous art-dump. Maybe posting up some backlog will clear out the cobwebs and I can get back on track.
Speedpaint I did last night. Tam suggested forever ago that I try switching up angles if I want to work myself out of a rut, so I'm just now finally getting around to doing that
but want to know what is behind that censor.
Also, I wanna know too!
I hope you guys like translating Aramaic.
Damnit computer, what's wrong!? You what!? What am I supposed to do with you if you can't even enhance a pixelated photo!? Worthless piece of crap!
I wanna see more BLARG stuff.
Here's another WIP. Trying a different approach to coloring and painting. We'll see how this works out.
And thanks, although my productivity needs a ton of work. I feel like I've been working on this forever. And now lady is bringing a cat home tomorrow, so a lot of my day is going to be taken up by prepping the house/snuggling something. A wretched existence.
I feel exactly the same way about my own work I have a lot of respect for people that can produce stunning pieces day in and day out.
That being said, you're one of my faves around here... keep it up!
@Mynt: Yeah, I'm going to try tweaking it with some depth of field and atmospheric perspective stuff as it starts to get more polished. It's a pretty huge mess right now :[
Progress. Pretty much done with laying down values and details on Samus and Ridley. Working on rocks now. Then colors. Grapple beam highlighted in blue so I can make it out amongst the tones.

I just didn't want to scrap them because I am so close to being done with this (stupid mindset yeah I know).
PS Send this to Nintendo when you're done :O
I'm not so sure about the color and the light though, though I fully admit this is probably more due to my stylistic preferences than anything. You've got a sort of old-school illustration look going on that fits the material really well, whereas (as you know) I like just pumping up the lighting a whole ton, which may not fit in this instance.
However, I felt compelled to take a pass on it, if for no other reason than I really like the composition and the drawing. I don't know whether I should even call it a paintover, so much as an alternate color take.
The thing that gets me with the color is that Samus's suit is so heavily done in purely local color+white and black, and while all the details in there are well done and accurate, they do sort of end up working against defining the basic forms- so I tried whittling it down to just the rimlight and the gun light, diffuse sky light be damned. I also used a Curves layer to make the background pure white, and the shadows a sort of intense purple, and brought that purple into the suit's shadows, to give a bit more color variation to the suit. There's actually not much red left in the suit now- it's most either reddish-purple or orange, but it reads as red because of the lighting. Having a large amount of solid white and purple makes the lit red/orange areas pop out a bit more intensely.
I also took a white soft brush to the wings to play up the transparency- if I were to really spend the time I might go even further with it and get rid of the wing outlines, and soften the wing edges to really play up the intensity of the light/transparency idea. A very literal representation of the wings with emphasis on drawing in a bunch of details might not be the way to go- a simple but nuanced treatment might work better. (And that last sentence might be vague to the point of being absolutely worthless as real advice, so I apologize if that's the case)
Anywho, I don't know if that helps, or if I've entirely missed the mark on what you're shooting for.

You're also spot on with the sky and wings. I think pushing the transparency even further is helping with some of the issues I was having with them.

Right track?
Generally dig the composition except (and it's probably too late for you to even consider changing but what the hell) I'm a little distracted with the crop on Ridley's thumbs. Left one is awkward, right one is sort of an icky tangent. I think I'd either pull it in a little tighter and eliminate the tangent (unfortunately also the claws) or pull it out slightly enough that we can see the whole things.
But I would really like to see this without a bright white background...I feel like it would read so much better without that harsh light weighing on it.
Don't agree with cake and bombs though. Though I'm sure you could make a darker background work, it would likely kill the stark graphic read of the piece in the process, which is a primary reason why the composition is so striking at present- a very clear, bold silhouetted dark shape on white ground. It works, it looks good, I don't know why you would want to fuck with that clear basic premise.

As for the background, I semi agree with AoB and semi with Cake and Bomb - it feels like it needs something else back there. Something like this might work if it tickles your fancy:
