Myeh, for some reason feet still give me a lot of trouble :x

When you talk about the lines of the fabric, do you mean varying the size of each fold more?

    Thx, ninjai

Okay, time for a spontaneous art-dump. Maybe posting up some backlog will clear out the cobwebs and I can get back on track.

Speedpaint I did last night. Tam suggested forever ago that I try switching up angles if I want to work myself out of a rut, so I'm just now finally getting around to doing that :#

    Yeah okay, lets do it.

And thanks, although my productivity needs a ton of work. I feel like I've been working on this forever. And now lady is bringing a cat home tomorrow, so a lot of my day is going to be taken up by prepping the house/snuggling something. A wretched existence.

Nice! One small crit... It might read a bit better if your foreground elements have more contrast in relation to your subject matter. They're getting a bit lost and mixed up in there since they're all similar values.

I feel exactly the same way about my own work :( I have a lot of respect for people that can produce stunning pieces day in and day out.

That being said, you're one of my faves around here... keep it up!

Progress. Pretty much done with laying down values and details on Samus and Ridley. Working on rocks now. Then colors. Grapple beam highlighted in blue so I can make it out amongst the tones.

My only comment would be that currently Samus is getting a little lost within Ridley's limbs and body. That area is pretty busy and the silhouettes are not well separated, even with the valiant effort on the rim-lighting.

Yeah, I've tried a few different approaches to separate Samus out from the mess of limbs and effects happening in the center. I don't want to push the values too dark on Ridley, but I also don't want them to be much lighter than they already are, since he's a dark-skinned lizard monster (slur patent pending). It might be easier for me to tweak it when I get colors laid out. I'll post up progress shots when I get there.

Battle damage. In the grayscale its a bit difficult to see. It is yet another effect I will have to try and make pop a bit more once I start laying down color, so I can get an idea of the overall effect, but there are some claw marks there. The idea is that one of the coverplates has been torn off.

Yeah probably. As much as I think the texture worked out, I'm not quite happy with how they turned out as a whole.

I just didn't want to scrap them because I am so close to being done with this (stupid mindset yeah I know).

I would play a new metroid game if this image was on the box cover. I wouldn't care how many times I'd killed Ridley. To kick his ass with that kind of raw force would be a new kind of satisfaction.

I just figured out she's binding his wings with the grapple beam. That's rad. This is the kind of shit Other M should have had in the Ridley fight.

Yeah, I was always disappointed the grapple beam doesn't get more creative play. Being able to use it to rip off Space Pirate armor in Prime 3 was pretty neat, but I always thought it had more uses as a melee weapon than it was given credit for.

Love the composition and the drawing :^: :^:.

I'm not so sure about the color and the light though, though I fully admit this is probably more due to my stylistic preferences than anything. You've got a sort of old-school illustration look going on that fits the material really well, whereas (as you know) I like just pumping up the lighting a whole ton, which may not fit in this instance.

However, I felt compelled to take a pass on it, if for no other reason than I really like the composition and the drawing. I don't know whether I should even call it a paintover, so much as an alternate color take.

The thing that gets me with the color is that Samus's suit is so heavily done in purely local color+white and black, and while all the details in there are well done and accurate, they do sort of end up working against defining the basic forms- so I tried whittling it down to just the rimlight and the gun light, diffuse sky light be damned. I also used a Curves layer to make the background pure white, and the shadows a sort of intense purple, and brought that purple into the suit's shadows, to give a bit more color variation to the suit. There's actually not much red left in the suit now- it's most either reddish-purple or orange, but it reads as red because of the lighting. Having a large amount of solid white and purple makes the lit red/orange areas pop out a bit more intensely.

I also took a white soft brush to the wings to play up the transparency- if I were to really spend the time I might go even further with it and get rid of the wing outlines, and soften the wing edges to really play up the intensity of the light/transparency idea. A very literal representation of the wings with emphasis on drawing in a bunch of details might not be the way to go- a simple but nuanced treatment might work better. (And that last sentence might be vague to the point of being absolutely worthless as real advice, so I apologize if that's the case)

    Fugdroid.jpg

Anywho, I don't know if that helps, or if I've entirely missed the mark on what you're shooting for.

I mean, when it comes to matters of lighting and color composition I will basically always defer to your judgement. In this case I think the best bet will be going with a middle ground between the two. I like the stark contrasts you've laid out, and it's giving the image a lot more pop than what I have now, but I do want to retain some of the diffuse lighting from the sky (since I'm not sure it would make much sense to completely abandon it). I think I agree that adding more color to the shadows and highlights will help push the piece to where it needs to be.

You're also spot on with the sky and wings. I think pushing the transparency even further is helping with some of the issues I was having with them.

Looks improved to me. :^: I'm a fan of the more transparent wings.

Generally dig the composition except (and it's probably too late for you to even consider changing but what the hell) I'm a little distracted with the crop on Ridley's thumbs. Left one is awkward, right one is sort of an icky tangent. I think I'd either pull it in a little tighter and eliminate the tangent (unfortunately also the claws) or pull it out slightly enough that we can see the whole things.

This is looking pretty cool...but I don't want to read the discussion because I don't really have time right now.

But I would really like to see this without a bright white background...I feel like it would read so much better without that harsh light weighing on it.

    Likin' the changes. :^:

Don't agree with cake and bombs though. Though I'm sure you could make a darker background work, it would likely kill the stark graphic read of the piece in the process, which is a primary reason why the composition is so striking at present- a very clear, bold silhouetted dark shape on white ground. It works, it looks good, I don't know why you would want to fuck with that clear basic premise.

I agree with Squidbunny about the tangents on the side.

As for the background, I semi agree with AoB and semi with Cake and Bomb - it feels like it needs something else back there. Something like this might work if it tickles your fancy:

Something like that would also highlight the fact that the wings are translucent, if you could see the change in background ever so slightly through the wings.

Thanks a ton, Wass. I actually had already worked out an overcast cloud background, but the solution you've got does a better job balancing the composition, and will make showing the cloud layer through the wings a bit more explicit.
