The World of the Dead
"Last night my wife died of a heart attack, and less than two hours later she was up and about chasing me down. She didn't know who she was, who I was, or where she was. I can could tell by her animal like growls and dead stare she wasn't right. That she wasn't the woman I spent three decades with. When she reached out and clawed for me, snarling like a wild animal, just begging to take a chunk out of me like I was tonight's dinner, I knew that she was even a damned human being. She was a monster. She only stopped trying to rip me apart once I smashed in the head with a hammer enough times that little chunks of her skull and brain mixed together and dripped out of her head like a smoothie. And she wasn't the only one, everyone everywhere is refusing to stay dead and turning into....them. When they stop coming back, its only going to mean on thing; we're all dead or turned into one of them." Anonymous Pennsylvanian man on local radio show.
The world has changed. Some say it was a biological attack made by terrorists, some say it was God calling forth the Rapture at long last, some say the Mayans where right in predicting what would have 2012, and others say it some meteorite that crashed on Earth and bringing with it this....disease.
It doesn't matter why though, does it? In the end it means the same damn thing. The dead have risen and want to make you dinner. The world goes to hell. Nearly all Governments have collapsed, police are no where to be found, and a thousand warlords declare themselves the kings and emperors of America and Canada.
You all remember when this all started don't you? It was only a little over two years ago...
Welcome to the
World of the Dead, an
All Flesh Must Be Eaten Campaign. In this game you will taking the roles of 4-6 average joes thrust into an impossible situation. You will start in the town of Stillwater, Alabama in Grate Gary's Bar. You might be a local or on vacation visiting relatives, or your car might have just have lost its wheel so you decided to grab a drink while you wait.
In Character Creation terms, that means you are all playing Norms, though I might let one or two of you play Survivors if you REALLY deliver a good background for your character. I suggest that a few of you, if you decide to play locals, talk to your fellow players before the game begins or you make your characters, to form connections and make a more solid background for your characters.

This sounds so cool.
I'll try and post some quick ideas shortly
I plan on starting this about one week into the crisis. People for the most part just think its weird rioters and such. But time is going to move a bit quickly in this game, as your goal in this game is to survive and what forms of shelter you create for yourself will last a little awhile. Little being the key word ( until like the Dead movies you come up with some one wacky scheme or another to get out of this mess once and for)
About a quarter or half way into this, I suspect you'll wind up in a setting VERY similar to Land of the Dead though.
Excellent everything is coming together...MWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Also I will be using the "one of the living" supplement
How detailed should we be with these concepts, Unicorn? Is it just "Ned here's an office zombie, trying to keep from becoming a real one" or do detailed backgrounds and ties to the past come up?

Do you want normal just in terms of point allocation? Or really normal (e.g. characters you would pin as red shirts in a zombie flick) ?
I would think this character would have to played somewhat oddly to have appeal. Mysterious Stranger vs. the Survivor. The seemingly aloof person with odd insights.
variations I thought of (brief)
1) Discovered Undercover Agent (should have died) - what I have planned is more Twin Peaks vs. Departed
2) A very bloody first assignment for an official (could fit into the above) (should have died)
3) An institutionalized young men (essentially suicidal so on his way to death in a way)
4.) A criminal who is close to being found and receives punishment in the hellish new world (inspired by the girl in Psycho)
This is doesn't really fall into the realm of normal. But if it was an overarching storyline (to where its the world is almost undead). The idea of "revived guy" or mysterious stranger type had some appeal..
Mix of Dale Cooper from Twin Peaks and Cillian Murphy in 28 days Later (mainly how he is in the beginning) crossed my mind.
And Farangu I want a pretty detailed background. You don't need to write a novel, but I want there to be some plot hooks and such I could use from your backgrounds.
Shushink, just write down what type of character you want to play (old cop three weeks from retirements, smart mechanic who was thrown out of college because of drug problems, ect)
It might seem smart to chose the cop over the mechanic, but we're playing with many of One of the Living's optional rules (no one outside me needs this book and if they have it they should know why. While it adds some nice drawbacks and advantages, must of it is GM stuff I can use to implement rules on what you need to do outside of killing zombies in order to surivie in this new world).
I heart Zombie Apocalypse.
Had a wonderful vietnam vet character I played in a Hunter game that dealt heavily in rots, etc.
He smoked a lot of pot and blamed all his "hallucinations" on Agent Orange....
I think I might play an everyday hick.
Jeans, boots, gunrack in his pickup, and the most important part....a very closed mind.
2 to 3 times a week posting wise.
Also both of those character concepts are great!

and hes played by Greg Kinnear
I'm writing up a CS for him now for and a PM explaining combat and system
I'm telling you why I've said I'm using One of the Living. Not only does it have good rulesets and mission seeds for surviving in the zombie over run lands in this brave new world, but dealing with other survivor groups. It can go well or....you've seen the original Dawn of the Dead I take it.
Since you seem to be going the ironic route, you should make him a television or movie action hero.
Rambo Bad-mutha, leader type on screen.
When the poop hits the fan though? he's terrified like everyone else, and even worse, since he lived such a pampered life has no clue how to survive without room service, chauffeurs, and groupies.
Would be kinda cool to have initial reaction to him be sorta celebrity shock, and people might think he's their savior...and then be pretty floored by his uselessness.
On a note unrelated to your character concept....this came at the perfect time. I'm in the middle of reading World War Z by Max Brooks.
Good book.
Zombies, infected, whatever. The concept of many vs. few is full of appeal.
Can we choose any character concept we want, so long as it is "normal" and starts at Gary's bar?
I'm going to go with a mid-40's writer who specializes in horror stories. No combat experience, armed or unarmed, but in decent cardiovascular shape due to a love of tennis and two overactive children. His family lives on the West coast, and was expecting him to return from a writer's convention. As such, he is skilled in public speaking and very familiar with horror genre. His inventory includes a laptop and luggage filled with supplies typical for a weekend convention stop. As a visitor, he has almost no knowledge of the surrounding territory. All he's seen since he got here was the airport, the convention center, and his hotel room.
His personal goal will be to return to the West coast and reunite with is family.
He stopped in at Gary's on the way to the airport and is probably on his third Cuba Libra when the story starts. Writers love to get their drink on. Especially when they have a fear of flying.
Edit: I figure this would most closely resemble the Reporter character archetype, so I'll go with that for stats & skillz, but let's tweak it a little, swapping out the "Finding the Truth" obsession with "Returning Home".
I can make spot for on more yes.
Felix Brauer. The star of the 80's action movie. Butt of many internet jokes. All-around badass on-screen. Has a functional knowledge of weapons, since everyone of his movies has him with guns. Still working on actually aiming, though. When his career dried up, it took him 6 months to be able to function without a personal assistant. He's still getting the hang of things like...ironing.
He's in Gary's Bar because Stillwater, quite frankly, is the kind of town that breeds fans of his movies. He was hoping to drum up support for a career revival(using Mickey Rourke as an example of the phoenix). Now he's hoping to drum up enough lackeys to help him through the apocalypse.

Like I want to play a Horror Writer named Tyler M. Kane, so I took the Reporter archetype, then swapped out the "Finding the Truth" obsession with "Returning Home" because he's middle aged with kids.
Aside from that, I'm leaving everything the same. It's World of the Dead, so we could be up against anything.
