Help Getting Started

I have always been a gamer, as all of you here can say as well. When I was younger I got into the whole pokemon craze and then, with my child-like attention span, abandoned it as quickly as I had amassed my cards. Then in my teens I amassed LOTR CCG cards, only ever playing them maybe twice. But it has only been recently that I have been getting into tabletop games, RPGs, and the like. How is it that I am 22 and only found out about games like Catan and Dominion (to name a couple) a few months ago? Can I even call my days before then a life? Looking back, hardly.

Here I am, in a brand new world and needing guidance. As much as I would LOVE to get into D&D, I don't have the time to commit to it as much as I would like. Maybe one day, but right now it wouldn't be fair to me or D&D. I'm looking at maybe more of a card based RPG. I did enjoy the short spurts of CCG I played in my youth. But where do I start? What games (table-top/card-based) are suggested for starting out? Where do I go from here?

My eyes are peeled, reveal to me the way.

I'm not really sure what you mean by card-based RPG, but I can recommend some tabletop games that have more RPG elements. My first suggestion is Descent. It's quite pricey but everything's ready to go, including the scenarios. Arkham Horror, apart from being an amazing board game, could very easily be vamped up a bit to have more RPG qualities.

Both of these are expensive. Looking for some cheaper options? Savage Worlds is a universal RPG engine that you can get for very cheap ($10.00 for the core rules-cheap). Another super cheap game is the newly released Enchiridion version of the game Reign. Both of these games are lighter and tend to require less prep time than D&D (in my limited experience).

I would also really recommend you check out Indie Press Revolution. This is probably the greatest source for indie RPG's on the net, and you can find a ton of smaller, more theme-focused games to pick up and run on here matching any genre you could want. I recommend looking up Fiasco (a-MAZ-ing game that's really easy to run) and Mouse Guard (extremely tight rpg set in the world of the Mouse Guard comic).

    Hope that helps.

Arkham is pretty fun, but is a looong game for someone new to boardgames. But, that'd probably be the case for most rpg style board games, I'd surmise.

Anyway, if you pop into the boardgame thread, they always have lists of games they suggest for people getting started with them, it'll probably look something like this:

    Settlers of Cataan
    Carcassonne
    Puerto Rico
Dominion, which given your ccg background seems like it'd be up your alley. I haven't played it, but I believe it still involves deck building, but without the expensive 'collecting' aspect.

I'm all for the long games, I have no problem with that. 3-4 hours of Catan the other night can attest to that.

The list you gave is what I am finding, with Carcassonne and Dominion popping up in every list.

Well theres at least a few to get started. Thanks guys!

No problem. I would also suggest going to boardgame geek if you haven't yet. The site's got kind of an awful layout but has tons of information as well as pictures and reviews. Oh! How did I forget? You need to get Neuroshima Hex! It's incredibly addicting and fast-paced.

It's technically a war game, but more like a competitive puzzle game. Each player picks an army and vies for control of the board in order to kill opponents' headquarters. The core game comes with four armies but the designers have released extra armies as free pdf's. They're very easy to turn into proper game pieces. We've made a post explaining how!

So I'm talking with my fiance last night (shes the one who introduced me to Catan) and I mention something about buying Carcassonne. She's like "Carcassonne? I have that! My brother bought it for me last year." So that was easy, one more reminder why I am marrying this woman. :P

I'm going to second Savage Worlds. You may want to check out the "Realms of Cathulu" setting from Reality Blurs.

You might be interested in checking out our boardgames discussion thread (see my sig).
Also, if you ever have exactly 4 players, Chaos in the Old World is a fantastic game.
