I'm wondering if it will work in my computer. I need what, a 6 pin power connector an a PCIe slot? Or are there any other eldritch requirements?
I've got an intel G31/G33 Express Chipset, 2gbs RAM, Core 2 duo 2.2 ghz processor. If this one won't work other suggestions that are <$150 and will make my computer more beautiful than an xbox360 are welcome.
I know it pushes right up to your price point (pushes past the price point before the rebate, even), but this is probably going to be the best card you can get for under $200.
However, knowing the wattage on your power supply will also help in making an informed suggestion (as opposed to my knee-jerk suggestion).

So when I decided to purchase I instead discovered that my computer didn't even have a pci-e slot tat permitted it to take a graphics card. SO I did not purchase and I am now assembling a new computer. Given that it's 5 months later does the 5770 recommendation still stand, or is there anything that's taken it's place in the "sweet spot" mid range in the mean-time?
How much are you willing to spend? The 5770 is kind of long in the tooth now. If you're still looking at under $150 then there are deals out there right now for the Galaxy GTX 460 768MB version which is much better than a 5770.
I live in Canadia, so I'm slightly worse off price wise. The gtx 460 does look much more attractive. Newegg 160 in Canada, and some similar and much worse prices for different manufacturers at Tigerdirect. I think I'll probably be settling on it. I was kind of hoping to physically buy all the components at a nearby tiger direct store, but I might not depending on price.
How much variation is there between different manufacturer's? E.g. galaxy vs. evga, vs etc...
Lol and on an unrelated note does the amd black 955 X4 sound like a respectable mid range cpu? Part of the attraction is the fact that it's AM3 so I'll be able to upgrade my computer more easily in the future.

If you buy a GTX 460 get the full 1GB and make sure it's not a gimped low power version. If you can spare the change an HD 6850 or a discounted HD 5850 are both great deals right now.
With AMD if you get the right mobo you can buy a Phenom2 X2 and try unlocking cores to save money. But yes the AMD CPUs are pretty good for their prices.

Slickdeals (Tiger Direct) - $93 after $60 rebate
Newegg - $120 after $40 rebate and a free TV tuner card
Amazon - $149 no rebate but currently out of stock.
However, if you're willing to spend $150, then might as well spend a little more and get the GTX 460 1GB version which can be found for around $170.

It really depends what you want to play with it.
