Is this story for real? Because this is worse than a lot of fan fiction. Holy crap this is bad. I've got the game paused right now and I don't know if I can even make it to the end of the demo because of how awful this is. I cringe anytime a character says anything at all.

Also: combat seems really spastic and terrible compared to Castlevania which is my current game. CV is just so good.

The timing on this release couldn't be worse. I'm playing this incredible action game with silky smooth combat, great combos and pacing, and then this comes out and it feels like I'm playing something a college intern created compared the masterpiece that is Castlevania.

You know. I don't think I'll be getting this at release.

I can't afford both this and vanquish, which releases about half a week earlier. And as much as I love star wars and jedi and force powers and explosions and etc, i'm still buying vanquish.

I feel a little bit odd about that considering how insane I was about the first game...

Yes but Vanquish is made by the guy who made God Hand and this is made by people who got fired from Lucasarts. In Vanquish you slide around on your knees and smoke to distract robots and in TFU2 you are a jedi plot device.

    No one can blame you.

I personally don't like it, but it's definitely not my top complaint about the original game. But from what I've read/watched, it seems to be in the same sort of style. Not necessarily a good or bad thing.

And in the end, the story is more or less just an excuse to disintegrate a battalion of stormtroopers.

I really didn't see what everyone thought was so bad about TFU. Sure it was crazy but no one seems to care when Wedge single handedly saves the universe or Corran Horn gets every girl he meets and saves the day. Hell it was a pretty neat story because it did some things most Star Wars stories never touch and it really did feel like a Star Wars story.

Played the demo. It's pretty cool. Much easier to play, takes no effort to throw things around and blow shit up.
Boy do you go insane when you do the berserk style power up thing. He doesn't bother walking over to people to hit them with his lightsaber. He just throws it and then guides them around like a homing bullet in giant hallway clearing sweeps.

It's easy to pick up object: point starkiller at them until you see the white outline then tap grip. I had no trouble targetting a box near some enemies and throwing it at them.

I can't think of anything I need to say about it: there doesn't seem to be any hidden tricks in this one. Just read the notations for the combos and use em, you'll blow shit away. Easy to play.

Hmm there is one I thought of. You can still grab jump troopers and throw them straight down over "death pits" to instant kill them.

    I had another go.

You can cancel out of any of your attacks with dash and chain into another attack. Basically I'm saying you can dash from enemy to enemy and tear them apart faster than you can say "Get behind him!".

They weren't messing around when they said they worked on the sabre fighting. I started at one end of a bridge and sliced n diced my way to the other, with no enemy taking more than a hit or two to kill except those melee guys.

If you are finding that enemies take a "long time to die" what you are actually doing is overkilling them completely because the game lets you finish mashing your way to the end of your current combo on the same long dead enemy if you really want to.

because you should buy vanquish instead

other than that i got nothing. its pretty smooth. there are definitely a few loose elements, targetting can sometimes be clunky when you are darting all over the place. and you can't make the camera flip around like you used to be able to.

but all the force powers are brain dead easy to use now and only really huge and highly telegraphed attacks can knock you down.

it's like a smoother version of the first one really, with added shebang and razzle dazzle and havok physics as you smash everything to pieces.

the end of the demo has you fighting two atsts and lets you try out the berserk power on them. you can pick them up with grip, crush them into a ball and throw them around. I tried to throw the first one at the second one, missed, so I just picked up the second one and threw it into orbit.

It still feels like there's a general awkwardness to the game that you wouldn't see in better designed games of this type. Stiffness in the movement, uninteresting level design, cumbersome controls.

But it has improved a lot, especially technically. I might give it a go if the PC version actually turns out to be worth a damn.

Unleashed mode at the end. A couple quick taps of the mind control and one drop ship worth of troopers was under my control. They walked over and took out the other troopers. Then they turned on each other. Then there was a rumble and explosion and they were all wiped out. Mind trick is gonna be the first power I level up.

I still need to get a copy of TFU:Sith Edition to play the extra missions.

You better say Starfighters of Adumar is an exception. :x (Although I mostly love it because Wes Janson is the best and I love having more of him in stories.)

But hey, back on topic: I played through the demo again and I enjoyed it more now that I knew what I was doing. Tried Hard mode, and I actually died pretty quick. I think it's because I kept on getting shot while doing combos, so Morninglord's dash cancel suggestion will be useful especially on higher settings.

These games kind of... I dunno, take the legend away from Vader a bit. I mean, he's supposed to be this unstoppable force, but the apprentice kicks his ass in the first one. And now the "clone" escapes from Vader pretty easily. He's more like the Robot Chicken bumbling idiot Vader.

Though I get the feeling that Vader let the "clone" get away in the demo.

I honestly think the TFU games take away a lot from the sort of mystique of the original films. The Rebellion is not an actual popular revolution against the Empire (that was kind of apparent originally, given how small it was), so much as a subversive plan on the part of Vader. The Imperial military, which somehow managed to stomp out a huge, super-powerful, apparently super rich telepathic child-abducting warrior cult which had the previous government, and its military, literally by the balls (that's what happens when you supply all the generals and field officers) is just a giant piece of crap, and their prior success seems like a fluke.

Then apparently there's another ungodly powerful Jedi. Vader isn't the unstoppable force that we'd been led to believe. In the end of the day, you're born with greatness, rather than trained with it.

I will, however, admit that's just my interpretation of the story's effect on everything. It could be interpreted differently very easily.

Two gripes from right off the bat in the demo:

    1) Why, when I choose to invert my Y-axis, does up move me UP during the dive sequence?
    2) Why, when I just dove 100+ stories through lots of stuff, do I die when jumping out the window and falling 6 feet into water?

Perfection is in the details. This is far from perfect. Also, the Force manipulation is reeeeeally cumbersome at times. I guess I have to get used to it.

Now, don't let my bitching make you think I didn't like the demo! I can't WAIT to get my hands on this. I should probably play the first one, though.

The PSN demo was up when I looked yesterday, Howdy.

As for Vader, you have to remember he's NOT the Godlike Jedi he was supposed to be for two very specific reasons:
    1. He was trained to RESTRAIN himself
    2. He was badly injured and crippled

He's still a badass, but he never realized his full potential. That's what the Apprentice is; he's Vader's legacy, a Jedi raised with no concept of restraint, trained to push his abilities to the max, and Vader gets to experience this vicariously through his student. Imagine, now, what Vader might have been had he not been crippled.

Don't think of it as "Vader's supposed to be the strongest Jedi ever!" Think of it as "If Starkiller is what happens when a normal Jedi pushes the Force to his limits, what must Vader think to have had that destiny denied him? Surely had he realized his full potential, Vader could have been a walking God of Death."

I've played the PSN demo and I was impressed.

The improvements over the first game are noticable. Lightsaber combat feels better, the dash move no longer feels awkward and tacked on and the targeting does seem as though it's been improved. It also helps that it looks good. Add to that some nice set pieces as well and all in all it feels like a large step up from the first game.

Definitely a day one purchase for me. And given that I've still got a boat load of holiday that I have to chew through before Christmas rolls around, I think I'll book the day off so that I can really enjoy it.
