Well, when one character on an otherwise stellar show could be written and played by a morose 14 year old girl, I call that terrible execution. I mean, the bulk of her lines were positively cringe-inducing. Like I said, Geek, why is River important? In what way is she smarter than Simon, or even Mal? In my opinion, she isn't and...she isn't. I shouldn't have to take it on faith that a character is special. It's a fucking show. They should SHOW me.

I always have a hard time putting into words why I like something.

The reason why it didn't come out and just say why she was special was because that was kind of the point. We knew a bit about her and that something fucked up was going on with her and the Alliance. We learned a little bit at a time and if the show hadn't been cancelled so soon, it would have been fun to watch it unfold.

And what's wrong with the character being played by a morose 14 year old girl when that's exactly what the character was supposed to be?

Uhhh...it did just come out and say she was special, Geek. Simon's speech to the crew after her appearance is basically all about how she's incredibly talented and smart. That's why she has to be smarter than Simon, Mal, and the rest of the crew; because that's her thing. They tell us she is, right out of the gate. Yet, for all this talk, all we really see of her are her predictable, boring fits and something like two instances of her being anything other than a total waste of resources.

I will definitely allow that, given time, her concept might have been improved upon. It isn't entirely fair to condemn her character when it wasn't given time to develop. But Geek, they had half a season to give us a reason other than "because we tell you she is" to believe that she's special. They did not.

It doesn't have to be shown all the time, but it does need to be shown often enough to justify the label. River spends 75% of her screen time either freaking out or crying in a corner. And as for what she could have done to better show her intellect, I don't know...consistent demonstration of higher-than-average mental faculties? An advanced ability to plan or predict behaviors? It's almost insulting, the way the writers handled it. They are practically jabbing us in the ribs, saying, "Hey, look at that girl freaking out. Take my word for it, she's super-smart." Maybe it worked for you (and I'm not insulting you if it did), but it didn't work for everyone.

And for two great examples of smart characters done in what I consider to be a pitch-perfect way, read the Death Note manga. "L" and Yagami Raito are smart characters that act smart.

Yeah, that or [spoiler:c0e14c3c92]They just couldnt see him, eyes not being able to track fast enough, etc. But no, him playing with the sword was just that, him playing with the sword. I saw no allusion to time stopping[/spoiler:c0e14c3c92]

Hiro really ran away with this episode. Every scene he is in was just so good.
