I mean, come on. The second sentence of that article:
Activision Publishing's new head honcho may be the man who created Sony's tie-wearing, trash-talking fake spokesman Kevin Butler, but that doesn't mean the largest publisher in the world will be getting their own fake executive hero soon.
Attitudes towards advertisements should be negative by default?
Yeah sure, okay
Yeah, pretty much, unless they prove themselves otherwise.
And even then it is someone's attempt to elicit you into doing something. Every ad is a siren song.
I like them because they're entertaining
I already had a PS3, so they're not gonna sell me on that
They've done Butler ads for ModNation Racers and MAG, but I still have no interest in those whatsoever. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy the ads greatly
I guess I just don't understand a default attitude of negativity towards ads. Ads are a part of life. If you can't wring enjoyment out of the good ones, then I feel bad for you. Hell, there are people that watch the Super Bowl specifically for ads (I don't do this but I don't condemn it either).

90% of what anyone says to you in any context ever is to elicit you into doing something, both sub- and consciously
I mean with that mentality mine as well not talk to anyone. Ever.
Also this myownsummer dude is kind of a cool marketing exec poster. I mean he started off kinda shaky with the constant threads about Sony stuff and the bot-like nature of his nonresponses to anything in threads he made but now he's kind of in a cool zone
Maybe it's his love for VC that is blinding me but OP, you're all right
Also myownsummer linked the raddest commercial ever in D and D

Clearly there is a difference between a friend asking you to come to his party, your mom asking for a hug, and a man pretending he shares your lifestyle and desires so that you will give him money for some product.
Every television ad is weaselly, slimy, and largely insincere.

Because in one instance you get something back. All the others are just selfish.

I disagree. It's all about intention with me- are you trying to deceive/manipulate me into buying your product or is it an attempt to entertain me?
I used to not give a shit about what body wash I bought but now I specifically buy Old Spice because the ads are so funny
At the end of the day, though, the ads aren't trying to emotionally manipulate me or use any personal knowledge it has about me to try and force me into doing what it wants- something I can't necessarily say is untrue about various people I have known
Indeed the knowledge that it is an ad makes it so it can never have that sort of control over my life- seeing a bad, dumb or offensive ad just makes me a little annoyed because of that mutual understanding that it's just trying to sell me a product
Regardless I'm not saying to look at all people like they're trying to manipulate you-that's sociopathic thinking. So is looking at all ads from a predominantly negative viewpoint. I like to view both with an open mind first without judgement
Ed: oh btw the Old Spice guy is responding to people's tweets on youtube, it's pretty hilarious
Technically every action you perform ever is selfish. You would not perform that action if you did not feel that it benefited you in some way.
UncleSporky wins again. The technical economic definition of the word "profit" stems from "party A" exploiting "party B". By that account, running a good business is nothing more than being selfish in all the most profitable ways.

For the love of God myownsummer, please post something not related to Sony marketing
I know this totally isn't what you meant, but I find this hilarious that you of all people wrote this, considering how much of a regular you are in the VG Industry thread

Heh, I actually thought of that, though I actually am capable of posting stuff unrelated to that, such as Futurama or beer or the second-generation romantic movement in English poetry or some such.

Heh. This is indeed humorous.
And yeah, KB isn't leaving Sony, but Activision might find its soul. A possibly humorous soul at that.
Also, thanks Spoit.
No, as long as Kotick's in charge they'll still exploit franchises into the ground and continue to fuck over their employees, most likely.
But hey, a little humor makes that crap okay!
because that one in particular is really great.

However he thought Marcus the "don't buy kiddie games" kiddie was awesome enough to post about on at least half a dozen different game forums.
He just works a lot better with Butler there as a foil, and he doesn't have as much material to work with since the PSP pretty much sucks
I gotta say I don't understand what people's strong appeal is with this shill marketing actor.
Maybe it's a good advertisement but at the end of the day, that's really all it is, and as such, should be a negative by default.
All I want for Christmas is a PSP. Even if you get that abortion done correctly, it's still slimy as hell.
Maybe it's just me.

This isn't a particularly convincing statement, as a lot of things are a part of life that deserve a default attitude of negativity.

A perfect example of this trend are the Old Spice body wash ads:
