I've never played an MMO before (and I'm not sure I even have the time to try one), but I want to say that man, the description of the recent history of Merch Industrial in the OP makes this game sound insanely great.
Edit: Also, I have heard that this game is like a 3-d and multiplayer version of the Escape Velocity series on the Mac. How true is that?
Wow, I had never heard of that game before, but browsing through the screen shots, it almost looks just like the early alpha's of eve, haha.
Just reading over the basic features list and summary though, I can see where a comparison would be made between the two games. They have a lot of similarities.
If you're at all interested though, don't hesitate to grab a trial and see what eve's about. There's no real commitment and actually playing it will give you a taste of if it might be right for you.
That was pretty much my first time playing Eve and I was surprised at how much fun I had not actually playing the game...or was I playing the game? Whatever I did it was awesome.
Yeah but he'd leave a message like, "I'm a space gypsy, get over it" and we'd all have a good laugh.
edit: seriously everyone, it was Fizban's first day playing Eve and he was trying to scam people. It was pretty awesome to watch because you could tell he was enjoying himself.

put in an app to join this afternoon. i haven't played in like a year but have been getting an itch to come back in. i never experienced 0.0 where all the cool kids hang out, so this is my attempt to do so and see what all the fun an commotion is about. looking forward to fun times if i make it in.
The guy who wrote Escape Velocity is a good friend of mine actually. I actually wondered if they were related when I first heard about eve since somebody told me it originally started as a mod for Escape Velocity.
Hello everyone. I've played a little bit of eve in the past, about a year ago, and am coming back to the game again. Every time I read about the game, I get very excited to play. Just joined this forum, was directed by a friend who's been a member for a long time and is applying to Merch. Hope to put an app in with you soon!
The best part of watching Fizban scam was seeing him be all "this guy is a week old i should take his stuff" and me screaming at him to take every penny the other guy has.

I played Eve a really long time ago, but never really accomplished much, or even entered low-sec. I want to join in on this 0.0 business! How stringent are the requirements? I don't really contribute much...
Also, if I am accepted, should I revive my old character or start a new one? I think I got a cyclone when I quit.
I'm tempted to come back as a new character and sign up. My last character was really a PvE based char and I never felt it was suited very well for PVP while I was going around with the last corp/alliance I was in. That and it was boring. Eve days consisted of sitting in station twiddling thumbs until SOMETHING happened.
Can Merch Industrial offer me an interesting fun Eve Online game?
EDIT: Or indeed alternatively I could always shift my old character.

generally it is never recommend to restart characters if you have already trained the basic learning skills.

Well, I made a trial account. I'm not sure I really like this game so far (the learning curve is awfully flat; I feel like I'm not gaining much proficiency), and I'm not sure if I'll have the time/if my computer can handle it. I may be applying to Merch, but don't give me anything yet as I'm not sure I'll be staying in the game.

Hmmm. In that case, permission to sign up?
I think the alliance I was in has been destroyed/swallowed up by another anyway. Not sure about the corp.
EDIT: Yeah, I just checked up. Closed up Sept 2009. I'm a free asset then.
Right that's me entered stasis period and applied to Merch. Just need to wait now. Got a whole lot of stuff I'll have to sell I think. Ships, gear etc.
I sent a request to join Merch, even though I'm still in a crappy ship and still learning the game. I just finished the first 10 military missions and was granted a Merlin frigate, which I can't yet fly. I was almost killed in that last fight, though; I had been relying on speed and range to win everything and when I got netted those missiles pounded my shields faster than I could regain the power needed to charge them. Fortunately I was still able to warp out and then warp back in a few times to kill the thing.
I have no real idea what I should be doing at this point; any suggestions would be appreciated.
I too am having trouble finding what to do in this game, what I was told is that you have to find your own fun. To me that means griefing and scamming people out of their ISK...so I will see how that goes.
When you're new there'll be times when you're just waiting for skills to train before you can do the next cool thing. Fortunately you don't have to be logged in to do that.
Actually I want to try scamming too, I guess the recruitment scam is the most straightforward? Dunno quite where to find info on that, though I guess those with a good thing going aren't inclined to share.
I've found a few market moves I can make but nothing really good, the one I found that'll turn a good profit isn't that high-volume.
At what point should I try to make the journey to Merch space? Right now I'm tooling around in a Condor, which seems pretty fast (is 500 m/s fast in this game?) at least. I'll be able to use my Merlin tomorrow.
And at what point will I be able to start plundering people and taking their stuff? Can you board other ships in this game, or is piracy mostly about destroying ships and rummaging around in the debris?

I think those that manage to pull it off often ransom the ship. They tackle it so it can't warp, then demand that the pilot pay them money to let it go, if he doesn't (or sometimes I imagine even if he does) they blow it up and take whatever drops. In order to pull that off you need to be able to kill the thing you've tackled, so probably not a great idea if you're in a frigate.
If you're completely new IMO you should do the tutorials and the tutorial agents before you leave highsec. You should also buy and inject what skillbooks you can. Someone ought to make a list "skillbooks to inject before leaving Empire." I'd try but I've forgotten which I bought there and which are more expensive in 0.0.
Putting out contracts for stuff with incorrect titles.
Putting out impossible contracts.
Recruitment scam part 2
Making another account and joining Merch several times and begging for money cuz im new lol
I am not sure how yet but I want to con someone into being space buddies with me and then after a course of months I will siphon all their assets and will to play this game.

I like my scam: saying cute newbie-ish things in corp chat and waiting for people to go "awwww" and send you ISK. It's like prostitution but without the dignity.
Every time I see anything for EvE it always makes me want to resub and at least try the real game. I had two accounts with a decent amount of isk that I made myself, but I really still dont even know the game.

As soon as you are accepted into the corp, you can travel out into our space.
The easiest method is called pod jumping. It involves docking, setting your clone to one of our stations, undocking in your pod, then hitting self destruct. You'll wake up in our station 2 minutes later.
500 m/s is fairly slow. Fully snaked out dramiels can reach close to 8000 m/s. They'll cost you a minor fortune to outfit though thankfully.
In regards to piracy, ransoming and the such is dead in the traditional sense. The plundering and pillaging will most likely be encountered when defending your home space from roaming gangs, or while on offense disrupting the money making of our enemies. Our covert ops gangs in particular kill some very juicy targets that on occasion drop modules worth close to a billion in loot. These faction fit ratter kills are by far not the norm, but they do occur.
The other method is called Awoxing. It involves having two characters, one in a hostile alliance, the other not. The spy character flying around in a small ship, and then tackles a friendly (to them) expensive target / bot. The main combat character then enters system, warps to the tackler, and proceeds to kill the target. This burns your spy, but has lead to some hilariously expensive loss mails for people that never saw it coming. It's another reason why we are so paranoid about new people sometimes.
I guess it was the autopilot changes that killed traditional piracy? I know gate camping is hard. The last op I was on (besides the shoot-DKUK one) we camped two different gates for a while and it was just hard as shit to catch people. It seems like the only way to do it is to catch them with a bubble on their way to the gate, which means they can see you in local before they enter warp.
Every time I see anything for EvE it always makes me want to resub and at least try the real game. I had two accounts with a decent amount of isk that I made myself, but I really still dont even know the game.
Thats just it. Without some direction.. say a corp like Merchi... you'll drift around.. dabble in some shit and basically get bored of the sadbox.
Getcherself out to some 0.0 space, and find that sweetspot in the game. I've enjoyed the time amongst the goons and you can bet that we're milking that sweetspot somehow. Gigantic scam? Huge Fleet battles?? whatever.
me, I came for the mining, and ended up ratting and getting ships blowed up, still have alot of fun when I can find time to play.

Pretty much all this. Also, shitposting and being dumb, these are things I enjoy as well.
For those who are thinking of applying, I just created a new sub forum on the merchi site that is dedicated to newbies. I posted a huge thread that gives everything you need to get up to speed in the game.
Here is the snippet from our history. Not sure if some of the links will work without access to the goonswarm wiki. The one thing that we will add to this shortly is merch getting it's little slice of Deklein, in some outpost yet to be named.
The History of Merch Industrial
There are two eras I refer to in Merch history. First is BGS (Before Goonswarm) and the second is GS (In Goonswarm).
Some of the early disciples of Merch (former directors and CEOs) have summarized their reign in a wiki post found here. The writings overlap in timeframes of reign and recollections.
Since we don’t have it well documented beyond that, I’ll highlight our history itt.
Sept 2007 – Merch Industrial officially sheds its billion isk dick joke and joins Goonswarm.
Nov 2007 – Merch was given E-PR0S outpost by Goonswarm.
Jan 2009 – After The Mittani sends his regards to Band of Brothers, Merch was given the task of POS spamming C3N to claim sov, and was the the second system to tick over to Goonswarm.
June 2009 – Merch Industrial drops it’s first outpost in 1-2J.
July 2009 – Merch Industrial drops it’s second outpost in CX8. 5 weeks later Merch gets it’s first Sov 4 system (Sov 4 has been since removed with the release of Dominion)
Jan 2010 – Goons forget to pay sov bills which consequentially caused all Goonfleet Sov to drop across 3 regions. Membercorps remain mostly in tact. Since the infrastructure of Delve and Querious was no longer in place to defend the region, a call for withdrawl was made.
Feb 2010 - Jinko decides to go fuck Merch and steal 85b worth of POS assets as well as bpos from his long time e-friend Daedalus. He constantly tries to inject that he's more goony than goons, showing he really doesn't ~get goons~.
Feb 2010 – The alliance and corp reforms under the SOLODRAKBAN gimmick name alliance, minus Battlestars and a couple other worthless corps. Goonfleet members move to Goonwaffe after Karttoon plays off that he planed everything from the start to smoke and mirrors the fact he was too dumb to have autopay set up for sov bills.
Mar 2010 – The great pubbie revolt occurs, as OEG, IGNE, and ARSED leaves for greener pastures. Merch decides to remain with Goonwaffe
June 2010 – Gimmick driven to the ground, alliance reforms as Goonswarm Federation under The Mittani.
You can find further information about the alliance history here
Don't know if anyone can do this, but i've now gone through the stasis thing and have quit the corporation. Just waiting for someone to invite me into Merch. Courthouse is currently asleep.
If anyone can invite me my name is Raven Newmert in Eve Online. If not i'll just wait patiently

I like to refer as the pre-goonswarm days as the bible, since it's a collection of writings drawn from recollections of various members.
Yeah done that yesterday but the stasis thing takes 24 hours.
