For all the potential newbies out there, let me simply add that my short time in Eve confirmed everything these guys are saying.
1. The game makes your real job seem simple.
2. Empire blows.
3. MRCHI is just about the best place a newbie can end up (perhaps after a stint in the Eve University corporation just to learn about how much Empire is less fun)
I quit because my real life bit me in the ass, hard. But the only reason I came by to lurk in this thread today was because I still think about being in a huge fleet, everyone wired for sound, following the dead serious commands of some 20 year old on a wireless bluetooth headset, while we destroy literally thousands of dollars of other people's stuff and collect tears. Sounds strange, but it was fun.
I left before Delve died, but I wonder if shedding the tears was almost as entertaining as collecting them...
I hope you guys are still having fun. Koreban rocks (or at least he did before he got put in charge of recruitment).
Hahaha, it was fucking hilarious when we lost Delve. I'm sure the logistics guys had a fucking nightmare trying to evac all the shit they could and all but I didn't have shit to worry about. A bit of rat loot and some ships was about it and I melted it all down and had a firesale on the minerals. Then I podjumped to Empire and watched the drama unfold. Good times.

It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

So I read drones are/were forbidden in many fleet engagements. Is this because of lag or what, or is it outdated information? I'm worried that I'll be completely useless because I've been spending all my sp on drone skills.
Drones have the same problem missiles do, only worse (i.e. travel time to primary). If you're specifically into sentry drones this might not be an issue, but none of the other types will be helpful.
That said they're still something you want to have for small gang stuff (I believe) and solo ratting/ganking.
You assholes really make me want to play this again. Unfortunately I have not the monies, and as I recall I'm still holed up in Delve in our old station. This seems to be a recurring theme with me. Doesn't matter. If I ever start playing again I'll just haul ass out of there like I usually do after a nice fire sale.
Knowing that the Federation recovered after that shit in Feb is heart warming. Good luck to you guys until I'm able to join you again.

I guess I can still fly a rifter.
Drones regretfully are just really bad for pvp greater than 10'ish people. As already mentioned, the flight time of drones to the target, and especially their terrible behavior in lag mean that they'll see very limited use. Primaries will die before your drones ever get there, and with the prevalence of FC's to fleetwarp at seemingly random, you'll leave behind a lot of drones in your career.
You're sp won't be wasted though because of how useful they are in pve. Drones 5, Drone interfacing 4, and t2 lights and meds are awesome. Drones 5 will also allow carriers to assign you 5 fighters, which is pretty and handy too.
Now if you want to fly a carrier/SC someday, you will need amazing drone skill to take full advantage of it, but that's a long ways down the road.
In the meantime, just train up t2 heavies, md. lasers, or md. projectiles.
(I say all this as a thanatos pilot and frequent das boot domi participant :?)
Drones might not be used in fleets but they are used in smaller pvp, in fact goonswarm has a group of pvp pilots called "das boot" that focuses on dominixes using scout drones.

Also, drones are still very useful in PvP despite being a bit like missiles. They can shoot small ships that you sometimes can't hit easily with your regular weapons. I, for one, always take a flight of Warrior 2s in my Drakes.

Drones are odd in PvP.
In small gangs, like a gate camp. They're used. Usually you have them assist an inty or something and so you have an uber fast mover ship with a glob of drones on him and when he tackles something a mob of bees takes out the target. We even has a 'gorskin cannon' fit of an interceptor that had a sub-second lock time. This russian dude if he was on the gate camp and a ship came through, he was dead even covops. he wsa one fast dude.
In POS shots Sentries are used to shoot the tower but the guns and stuff you can put drones on.
However the big one is Fighters. If carriers are deployed in the fight screw the drones enjoy your five assigned fighters from a carrier pilot. Now you have five cruisers of shooting power flying around with you. When you warp, they follow, etc. Great stuff.

Why are missiles so little used in PvP? From my (minimal) experience they're fantastic in terms of damage per second and damage per cost. My medium gun batteries don't crank out nearly the damage at nearly the range of my heavy missile launchers.
If it's just the travel time issue, couldn't you order missiles launched at a secondary target while using guns (probably the bulk of your arsenal in most cases) to take out other targets one by one? Or is it really necessary to absolutely focus on one thing at a time to get it down fast enough?
In a big fleet fight the primary is likely to be dead before your missiles reach him. But in small gangs I think people still use missiles fairly often.

Yeah, I got that. I was just wondering why you don't designate a secondary for missiles instead (maybe the damage splitting isn't worth the options missiles provide? I'm not sure.)
I think that's what missile ships do is focus on the secondary. I think the only downside is that fleet fights can get hectic and the secondary may not be called, or it too might be dead by the time missiles arrive. Fleet fights used to take place between blobs of sniping battleships as I understand it so missiles spent forever in flight. Now that people are fighting a bit closer together missiles might be more viable. But then I barely know what I'm talking about, so there's that too.
In a fight with a decent sized fleet, even if they're calling three targets at a time, they'd typically all be dead before more than a few missiles hit. So you'd be on your own, attacking your own special target. Which barely helps the fleet, because you need to focus fire to burn through targets that quickly.
Whee, while dodging a Sabre and Dramiel that are trying to kill my transport fitted Drake, CCP decides to disconnect me. Probably better to stay offline since I (don't think I) aggressed them, and should be offline before they can blow me up, hopefully.
I wonder when a good time to log back on would be, hrm.
But I played FFXI for years. I know that I hate myself...
Hopefully there's some drakes for sale near home base, with missiles to shoot.
The most frustrating thing is that I wouldn't have had a problem getting away from them if I hadn't been dc'd. They had two warp disrupters to my two stabs, and I had a MWD to get out of the bubble. They barely scratched my shields.
Wow, I got podded after getting booted off the server, with no aggression. Fucking hell.
Your DC most likely causes you to become agressed. Basically they just need to drop a bubble on you when the server tries to emergency warp you. Instead of being e-warped you fail and become aggressed.
Getting podded increases our number of corp deaths, which increases our kill + death per member ratio, which is the single most important metric in all of EVE. I got podded last night and was damn proud of it.
I heard we need coolant, so I bought a command center and set up production in Deklein. Took a long time to track down and retrieve the CC; there weren't any available Deklein or the adjacent regions.
That reminds me—I made what I expected to be a dangerous trip across a bunch of systems and way into the True Blind sector, but all I found were friendlies. Is there somewhere I can find a big map of what areas are controlled by friendly alliances and which ones are controlled by hostiles?
When it comes to the north it's quicker to list the places that aren't blue to us. The closest danger zone is probably Evoke in Cloud Ring. I'm not as up on sovereignty as others though.
I redesigned my production facilities and now I'm producing almost twice as much coolant from the same planet. I had way too many resource extractors going for my refining capacity and filled my spaceport up to 80% with backlog raw materials in one day. I also managed to save a lot of power by building my basic refineries next to the extractors and then piping those products over level one routes back to my spaceport (instead of shipping everything to the 'port and distributing from there).
Really, I need to just get a better command center. Oh, and a ship big enough to carry a better command center. I think I should probably buy a basic freighter for my planetary jewing needs.

Ahhh.... so I've been bitten by the 5-day free resub thing.
I believe I last played EVE around mid-2007 or so. I know merchi was down in e-pros or whatever it was called. Based on this thread (and others) it looks like "everything has changed" and merchi is on the other side of the map.
So I guess it is firesale and get myself to the other side of the map.
I did log on briefly and I don't have a ton of stuff in e-pros, but a little bit. I've actually got a bunch more stuff in the station one jump away, but it might as well be 30 jumps away as I obviously wouldn't be able to dock there. And I don't have Marketing to remotely sell the stuff there .
Oh well, I can always make more ISK. And if I ever get Marketing to 5, I could consider doing something silly like popping back down to that region and trying to sell the stuff.
The two times I logged on the system I was in was empty, so the crazy part of my brain was considering trying to make the million jumps to get to where I want to be. I know I made the mad dash from Empire down to e-pros a while back. But it looks like a much, much longer dash to Deklein, so maybe I'll figure out the podding thing.
The character name is Seldar Ne'rad. I am currently in a Vexor, and I've got a Myrm and an Iteron in the station with me. I recall doing mostly salvaging and a little mining and a little ratting. Being Gallente I did a bunch of stuff with drones.
Looking at the new stuff, the Planetary Interaction stuff looks kind of interesting, so I was thinking of giving that a go.
So I will be putting in my application to the corp later today. I'll then probably pop over to one of my really old Empire guys and try to remember how to fly spaceships and shoot things.

as far as I know we have no war decs at the moment so it's a mad dash to empire, then a leisurely stroll to the other side of empire space, then another mad dash.

That's good to know. Not having to worry about being podded while bouncing through Empire (if I actually get there in once piece) will be one less thing to worry about.
Tonight I'll be reprocing and selling everything down south, then messing around with an Empire character (to remind myself how to use gates quickly and stuff) before I try to make the run to Deklein.
It's also probably best to wait for the app to be accepted, so I'll probably hang out in Empire til that happens. I do need to pick up some PI stuff, and maybe look at a planet or two.
I also need to figure out the clone stuff again. I've got an evemail telling me it was moved, but I have no idea where that system is.

You always have to worry about getting killed. Suicide gankers will happily lose a cheap ship to get at some valuable cargo in an industrial.

Well, I wasn't planning on doing the run in an Interon. I've got a Vexor and a Myrm to choose from.
The question I did have was about selling stuff. I'm currently docked in e-pros, and I've got a bunch of stuff in AZN. I obviously cannot dock at AZN to sell, but can I sell while in the system? I know you need Marketing to sell stuff from jumps away, but I was curious about in-system.
As if the system is empty, I may warp to right next to the next gate and sell as much as I can. I'm thinking the more assets I can liquidate the better.
Some of the stuff I won't be able to see I imagine, and I can only list so many things for rock-bottom prices. It's too bad you have to be docked to reproc stuff.

Usually rank 1 let's you sell while in space in the same solar system, then rank 2 and beyond is jumps away. So without at least rank 1 of remote sell skill, you have to be docked in the station.
The russians that occupy that space never buy stuff off the market. Leave it there for when the winds change and we can dock again some time ~in the future~
Just post in the newbie threads, people will give you enough isk to get started.

I loved doing that shit when I flew a sabre.
At least aggression is system dependent
If only that mattered when you get disconnected. That was the send time I've been disconnected from EVE in months.
Also, I haven't played in forever. I'm guesing selling all my old e-pr0s stuff is the most viable option?

You definitely don't need a freighter, a basic tier 1 hauler will work just fine.
