Flightsticks!

I posted this question in the Space Sim thread but haven't gotten any replies, so I thought I'd just make a thread about it.
So for the last couple of years I've been using the Ace Combat 5 Hori flightstick with the beta drivers some Japanese dude made. I recently upgraded to Windows 7, which the drivers don't work for. I also have an old Sidewinder FF2, but I prefer the more modern HOTAS sticks (plus I hate the FF centering of the FF2, since it doesn't work in most games).
So it's time to buy a new stick! I'm planning to pool money I get for my birthday this weekend to buy it. My budget will be anywhere from $100 to maybe $150.
Googling around, I've seen good and bad things about Saitek sticks. Anyone have any experience with either of these? Should I spring for the Pro (Amazon has it for $140)? Are there other options I should consider?
I've had a pair of Saiteks (The AC5 set for PS2 you've got, as well as the X45's I think). The "HORI" AC5 set is basically a repaint of the Saitek X45's. They're both great and still work wonderfully, I've had them for years.
That being said, I've also had some wonderful logitechs as well. Really its up to the feel. Go to a store and put hands on if you can.
Saitek's sticks are pretty...average. The company's strength seems to be the wide variety (they even offer a FF model, the Saitek Evo Force, though it's not as well made as other FF joysticks).
Sorry to hear that you won't be using your FF2 anymore. God, I loved that controller, used it for years and years. But, as you said, the return force doesn't work in conjuction with FF in a lot of newer games.
If you're interested in FF, want foot pedals, and don't mind dropping a lot of money, the Logitech G940 offers an outstanding, well-built stick with good FF and an absurd number of buttons, an excellent throttle setup (double throttle, two axes, which you can link together), and good pedals. Only HOTAS with force feedback to my knowledge. They may be out of your budget though.

Yeah, I'm thinking $150 is going to be about the most I can swing. At the extreme I might be able to swing $200, but anything over that isn't happening.
FF isn't really a big thing to me, honestly. I just want a good stick that'll last a while. I would love rudder pedals, but I think I'm going to have to get those separately later. I also want a TrackIR setup.
I had a Saitek long ago, like 2002ish, and I found it to be pretty bad. Not very substantial construction and I felt the action in it wasn't anything to write home about, particularly for the price. Like synthesis said... pretty average products, which, if you're an enthusiast... is not good.
That seems to be the best value you can get for your money Carc. Thrustmaster makes a few but they're not worth the money (and ugly as sin). It appears all the Joystick manufacturers have gone out of business from back in the day.
That X52 Pro you've got there is a beauty.

If you're willing to do a bit of wiring (and possibly lose ps2 functionality), you could get a replacement controller board and keep using your current stick (the prices are £16.99 to £44.99).

That's pretty awesome, but I'm not really comfortable taking it apart, and price-wise that's approaching a new stick anyway. Awesome to know if I have one break out of warranty, though.
I have a profile for it too, if you end up getting one.
Also mechwarrior 4 which is free, you're gonna wanna download that too.

Heh, I actually found out my current stick won't work under Windows 7 because I installed the newest version of FSO. It was all setup and ready to go, then I dug my stick out, and disappointment. And yeah, MW4 is good, too.
I also plan to spend some time with IL2, which I bought a while back but haven't played, and I plan on picking up FSX.
I'm also a huge Wing Commander fan....

I went through three X52 sticks a while back. Playing IL2 and other titles.
Had a big problem with the sticks losing center. Forget what else ended up breaking. I do remember trying to get an RMA was painful.

See, that's the kind of stuff I've been reading. It makes me nervous, but I don't know what other options I have in my price range. One problem I've heard is there's a metal tube the wires run through inside of it and it can shave the insulation off of them, creating a short.

Wing Commander. There needs to be a new Wing Commander, stat. Who bought Origin? Someone's got the rights tucked away waiting for the right time. The time is NOW!
Except probably not, sadly.

I bought X52's for use with FSX, LOMAC, etc on my Win7 box. While it worked alright in FSX, trying to do custom keymappings on the stick using Saitek software was a complete nightmare. The software was buggy, and some features would outright not work. I spent hours trying to dig and research for the proper software to actually map the stick. You also have to be manually authorized on their support forums, which took two weeks. In the end I am not sure I resolved the issue, but I won't be buying Saitek again.
I bought a cheaper Saitek stick, and I've been using it for 3-4 years now. It works really well for most games, and I've not really had a problem with it besides the one way throttle they decided to use.

IL2 is absolutely fantastic. So much fun, and the online play (several years ago, when I was playing) was great. You'd have servers with the opposing bases real close to each other and you'd wind up with air quake - things like spitfires and la-7s duking it out with no thought to strategy - and you'd have servers where you'd see really protracted energy duels between long nose FW-190s and P-47s.

IL2 dogfights were great fun. I had a pretty static group of friends that flew co-op missions Wednesday evenings and then weekends were dogfight maps, either free for all or teams.
The X52 was a great stick for those games, and priced decently compared to the CH equipment. I don't regret purchasing mine, just was disappointed that they weren't constructed better. Unfortunately there isn't much available in the way of joysticks or hotas equipment these days.
Il-2's dogfights have always been great. Not easy to get used to at first, but great. I've been a sucker for Ki-100s and FW-190 "Antons"--I work best with small, maneuverable, ridiculously well-armed fighters at lower altitudes.
Just saw this today on gizmodo. Might be worth a gander!

I have a Saitek X52 I've used for LOMAC for a while, and it's served me well. You can't adjust the tension on it easily, like you can with the Thrustmaster Cougar, so if you care about super precise control, the stick can feel a little soft. In a sort of ironic twist, the throttle assembly is probably not soft enough, and making really precise throttle correction can be a bit annoying.
If you aren't trying to be a crazy Virtual Blue Angels guy, the Saitek will work fine for you I'm sure.

That is a good deal. I'll add it to the list of possibilities, but it'll probably end up still being too much.
Though I have to wonder... at that price, would I be better off going with a CH stick and throttle? I wouldn't get the rudder pedals, which I can live without, but would the rest be better quality? My only hesitation with those is I've read the stick can be kind of uncomfortable if you play with it above your elbow (up on a desk) since it's modeled after an F-16 stick, which is meant to be beside your leg.

I believe the Pro version has knobs on the side for adjusting tension, so that's something to think about.
I appreciate the suggestions so far. I'll hopefully be able to make a decision this weekend or early next week.

Alright, I just ordered the X52 Pro, so hopefully I'll have it in the next week or so. I basically had to decide between getting the regular X52 and Flight Simulator X, or getting the Pro and picking up FSX later, which I decided on. I figure I'd be better off with the slightly better stick, hopefully, and I've got enough stuff to use it on in the meantime.
I'll post back after I've gotten it and spent some time with it, with my impressions. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

It also looks like the throttle folds back up against the stick for when you're not using it.
